Here is our first ever trip report which we hope will please all the mites who choose to read it.
THURSDAY 24TH OCTOBER
After our flights from the UK and a 1st night stop in Kuruman we finally arrived in KTP at 2.10pm. We were greeted by a sand storm and extremely dark threatening clouds! We hope it’s not going to be like this for a fortnight!
We checked in to cottage no. 28 at Twee Rivieren camp. We located Jannie and gave him the donated clothes we had brought with us.

Here is the reception building.

We drove back to camp and at last the wind seemed to be calming.
Arrived back at 6.55pm. We had dinner on the patio watching lightning in the distance.
To be continued....

Thanks for the praise gatita, but your compliments must go to DD as she is the photographer.
I have enough carrying my binoculars, telescope and tripod without the hassle of carrying a camera and lenses as well.
Mind you I'm also the chauffeur so have other things to consider, like driving and spotting at the same time.

Thank you all for your kind comments, more trip report to follow after DD's done the ironing.

Take care wherever you are.

PF and DD.

Thanks all for the nice comments and @gatita no apology required PF is only the driver (and sometimes cook). So, ironing done - back to the TR.

At 10.10am we left the camp to head north up the Auob road towards the Kalahari Tented Camp. (28°).

and a Black-shouldered Kite. No photo as it was flying away and this was our only BSK that we saw this trip. Most disappointing for PF as he is a keen raptor watcher. We had come a month later on this trip as we had been advised that there would be more raptors which did not prove to be so.

We arrived at Kalahari Tented Camp at 3.07pm (33°) and checked in to tent no. 6 for the next two nights. Image

More to come...

Our last drive of the day.
At 5.05pm we left camp for a drive north towards Mata-Mata, Lilac-breasted Roller.

We turned back towards the camp and the 5 Giraffe had come nearer + 4 more GiraffeImage

We arrived back in camp at 6.45pm (still 30°). We sat on the balcony watching darkness fall.
Having read tales on the forum about mice nibbling groceries we kept ours in the bedroom hanging in cloth bags from the wardrobe rail! So when we sat having dinner in the kitchen area and I looked up and saw a rat staring at me from the draining board!! I mentioned to PF that maybe having mice wasn’t the problem. Wish I had taken my camera into the kitchen! A Black-backed Jackal at the waterhole this evening but we were too tired to stay up to wait for anything else.

Keep following this TR as the next day was special!

Our journey continues.

SATURDAY 26TH OCTOBER
We awoke at 3.00am and checking the waterhole saw 5 Giraffe drinking which was nice, and 2 Black-backed Jackals. Back to sleep.

Awoke later to a beautiful morning (when isn’t it beautiful?) 1 Black-backed Jackal at the waterhole (this pic shows how far away the waterhole is from the tents.Image

We were out of camp at 6.50am (15°).
We drove South: Springbok, 1 BBJ, White-backed Vultures, PCGImage

We arrived at Mata-Mata camp at 10.10am. This morning we had decided to walk over the border to the farm stall in Namibia. We had read about this on the forum and thought it would be worth a look. We asked the police lady at MM and she okayed itImage

then we walked to the Namibian border post and asked if it was okay and the lady there said yes. So 10 minutes later we were at the farm stallImage

It is a sweet little shop although not quite as stocked up as expected. We understand there is frozen meat (but not eating meat we didn’t check that) but there is definitely biscuits, chutney, sweets and souvenirs. At least it had made a fun diversion. PF with the bag of goodiesImage

Back in South Africa we now headed back towards KTC. Ground Squirrel with babyImage

Then just before the turn off to KTC we stopped....and what did we see. You'll just have to wait!

Okay is everyone back on board??

So we were just before the turn off to KTC where we stopped at a huge Sociable Weavers nest.
Image
2013_10_26_IMG_2577 by cstevens0559, on Flickr
There was a bright yellow loop hanging from the nest – a Cape Cobra!! Image
A CAPE COBRA by cstevens0559, on Flickr

At this point PF was bouncing around inside the car with excitement as snakes are one of his MUST SEES. This is when we decided that our patience could pay off. As we were not in a hurry we decided to sit and wait for the snake to move.
The poor weavers were waiting to get back in to the nest but I think it was probably too late for their babies withinImage
SOCIABLE WEAVERS WAITING FOR IT TO LEAVE by cstevens0559, on Flickr

45 minutes later the ‘loop’ started to move! We could see a 'lump' in its body so it had found breakfast.Image
IT STARTED TO MOVE by cstevens0559, on Flickr
The snake doubled back out of the hole Image
2013_10_26_IMG_2584 by cstevens0559, on Flickr
and then proceeded to work its way up and over the nest trying to find its way into another hole.Image

We stayed for a further 45 minutes watching this and it made us realise why the weavers build their nest as they do with a smooth top so the snake just could not get a ‘grip’ with its tail to enable it to swing its head into another hole. Fascinating. We had seen this behaviour on a tv programme never expecting to see it happen for real. Just proves the saying ‘to expect the unexpected’.
Once the snake had vanished over the top of the nest we headed back to camp arriving at 12.30 for a very late breakfast and a rest.

Back with the African Wild Cat we decided to wait and see if it moved (our patience had paid off with the snake earlier). So we sat, cars came and went and eventually we only could spare a further 10 minutes. The cat must have read our thoughts. It got upImage

 I think that your 'nightlife' photo is an adult antlion and I am very  . I remember seeing lots of them on the KTC tent's window netting (tho I didn't know what they were at the time), but had no chance for a photo, so I am very impressed by yours!

Thanks to all who asked about AWCs.

Son godin. We saw 5 on the Auob side and 1 on Nossob side.

Fotomaljohan. On our first visit in 2011 we only saw 1 AWC near Mata Mata.
This time we saw 6 in total.

gatita. The one we saw come down the tree was 1.5km north of the northern Dalkeith turn off (loop road).
Another one was 6.2km north of Urikaruus camp turn off (big tree right-hand side of road). We also saw a male literally 200 mtrs further north on that road - he shot out in front of our car!
One more seen between Urikaruus and Auchterlonie but didn't note exact location.
We also had one at Kieliekrankie camp.
The one on the Nossob side was 0.7km south from Unions End (in a tree on left hand side of the road).

DD & PF

Page has now turned so on with the TR.

We had a fantastic stay at KTC and the drives around the area had been brilliant. Don't forget room 6 is directly opposite the waterhole.
We had a slow start this morning as we would be moving on today.

As it started to get dark the Barking Geckos started up – it sounded like there we hundreds of them!
Eventually we returned to our room for dinner before the lights went off at 10.00pm (until 5.00 am).

A bit of nightlife (especially for arks) - not sure what they are if anyone knows please advise.

Thanks PF. :gflower: Wish that I knew something about moths but I don't  However, the first photo is a Bibron's gecko and I think that the large critter in the last photo is another ant lion -- I've read that an identifying feature is the 'knobs' on the antennae
