At Auchterlonie picnic site we met up with Katja, Jacliz and Jeff, Katydownunder and Francolin.

A Bateleur (juvenile) flew over.

We chatted until 2.15pm and then were back in camp at 2.30pm. We decided to have a long rest today as it was very hot at 36° and we needed to digest our mornings sightings!

At 6.30pm we left camp for a brief drive. There was now a huge bank of cloud so maybe a storm brewing.

At Auchterlonie waterhole there was a Tawny Eagle at the water

and another on the grass picking at the remains of something.

We were back in camp at 7.30pm.The clouds were dark and there was lightning in the distance.

We spent the evening with Jacliz and Jeff having a good old chat and toasting our second Leopard sighting!

We were out of camp at 5.30am this morning.

The sky changed by the minute so I was unable to resist taking more photos.

We found a Cheetah walking along the riverbed when suddenly she went into hunting mode but it was a bit half hearted and the Springbok were quicker!

A little further on we at last found a pack of Spotted Hyena - six of them.
They were finishing off their breakfast and were covered in blood.
Image

They started walking along the riverbed so we followed them for a while.

One of the youngsters came over towards us a couple of times but we kept moving as we didn’t want our tyres chewed.

We decided to drive on a bit and try to find them again on the way back.
We stopped at Kamqua picnic site at 7.00am for a comfort break and then headed back south.

At Rooibrak waterhole the Hyenas were just arriving.
The lead one arrived and sat in the water.
Image

The others eventually arrived.
Image

The second one seemed to consider he didn’t need a wash after all so carried on past!
Image

The third one just had a drink. The other three hyenas were no longer in sight.

So we carried on southwards.

Further along the road we found two Spotted Thick-knees (Dikkop).

Next up another Cheetah or maybe the same one we had seen earlier. If so then she had successfully hunted after all. So another bloodied face.
