SUNDAY 3RD NOVEMBER

We awoke to yet another cold but sunny morning. We decided not to drive out first thing as we would be taking the long route via the dune road to Kieliekrankie Wilderness camp later (due to not being able to check in until 2.00pm)

At 7.20am we sat on the deck enjoying breakfast and watching the waterhole. Some Springbok passed by without drinking.

Lots of Sandgrouse came to drink though but were very nervous and with good reason. A Lanner Falcon zipped through but failed to catch one.

We finally had to leave so we were out of camp at 8.40am (21°).
We decided to head north first to see the African Wild Cat again. They are so adorable and we always had trouble tearing ourselves away from them.
Springbok and 2 fawns.

The AWC was in it’s tree looking as gorgeous as ever.

A little further north another African Wild Cat ran across in front of us and shot in to a bush and squirming through the thorns (ouch!) he vanished from sight.

At Dertiende Boogat there were some Gemsbok.
Image

There were also lots of Red-headed Finches darting from bush to waterhole and back again.

We like sitting watching the birds like this. They are constantly on the move and just taking sips before returning to the safety of the bushes.

Again this is with good reason as a Lanner Falcon kept flying through trying to catch breakfast.

We carried on as far as the Cape Fox den but they were not around. So at this point we turned round and headed back south.
Back at Dertiende Boogat the finches seemed to have finished their attempt to drink.

We found the Lanner Falcon in a tree.

We stopped where the AWC had crossed the road and we could just see him in the bush. Sorry not good enough to photograph.

Once back with the usual AWC it was sleeping. Ahh!

At 10.55am we made a quick comfort stop at Kamqua Picnic site.

Further on there was a Spotted Hyena asleep.

Two Spotted Thick-knees (Dikkops) under a tree. These birds have always been one of our favourites. We much prefer the name Dikkop as Thick-knee sounds so insulting!!

Next we bumped into another YR – Hayley Idaho. Nice to meet you Hayley.

At Montrose waterhole: A proud pair of Ostrich with eight little chicks.

Whilst looking intently along that calcrete ridge for big cats I (DD) found a Spotted Eagle Owl!! A long way off but a good spot!

At 1.15pm (33°) we stopped at Auchterlonie picnic site for a comfort break.

Next we turned East onto the Lower dune road.

We made frequent stops along here to admire the many flowers. Typical of plants in a desert environment the flowers are small.

We arrived at Kieliekrankie Wilderness camp (for a three night stay) at 2.00pm (34°) and we were warmly welcomed by Willem the camp attendant (Willem had been here when we stayed 2 years ago).

Lots of photos now for those who have not stayed at this camp, and to remind those that have (sigh!).

We were to be in cabin no. 4 at the end of the row.

At 5.50pm (35°) we decided to go for a short drive.
KK road: A PCG and a couple of Secretary Birds.
At the main road we turned north and saw a Crimson-breasted Shrike, a BBJ and a Tawny Eagle.
At Batulama waterhole we turned back south.
Then a nice surprise a Purple Roller.

As you may have gathered from previous posts one of our favourite things to do after dark is look at the night creatures that are attracted by the light.
There was huge spider on the bathroom window – we think a White Lady spider.

MONDAY 4TH NOVEMBER
We awoke to a beautiful sunrise.
Image

We left camp at 6.00am (18°).
KK road: two Kori Bustards, a Tawny Eagle and some Springbok.
At the main road we turned north.
A Cardinal Woodpecker was drumming.
Image
Image

At Batulama waterhole there was a huge herd of Springbok walking along the riverbed.
Image

Someone told us there were lions up ahead near to Rooibrak waterhole. When we got there a single male Lion was looking so handsome in the morning sunshine.
Image
Image

We had missed the other male and a female who had already gone over the dune and this one soon followed.
Image

Why do some lions look as though they have just had their hair brushed? Maybe his hairdresser was hiding behind the nearest tree?? Can I have a go??

Another large herd of Springbok.

Then we came across three Kudu males on the dune.

At the Urikaruus road we turned round.
The Kudu had come down the dune and crossed the riverbed there were 4 males and 2 females. A nice little herd.

We met Katja again on her way to Mata Mata. She said there was to be a forumite mini-meet tomorrow morning at 11.00am at Auchterlonie picnic site  . We said we would be there.

We were back in camp at 10.10am (33°). Katja had left us a note about the Barn Owls next to room 2. As there was no one in that room we walked along to take a look.
They were in the water tank shed. We could only see one right at the back. Lovely!

Three BBJs also came to the waterhole and were very entertaining. They were rolling in the mud and in a bush (is it a special type of bush? Does it smell of something nice? or not as the case may be).
