So there we were, three angels stuck in the mud. For a moment we just sat there with faces like this:  .

Then one of us said, "what are we going to do?"
"We need to dig the tyres out."

My sister was joking but we jumped out of the car, cautiously, and analysed the situation:

Image

I could smell elephant!

I scanned the bush and everything seemed ok.

We dug behind the tyres until we were happy and then I got into the drivers seat and I reversed with everything the little car had. It screeched and whined but it came out!! I think I scared any ellies away with that noise

I CAREFULLY made the way over the right side and we skid a little bit but we made it through.

  We were very proud to have navigated that situation on our own 8)

We went on the S69 loop for a quick look for the snipe, but for the first time with all this rain, we found this.

So we promptly went back to camp, having had enough of flooded roads and I went to see the river, as usual.

However, the rain up north had definitely been more than we had thought!

Some more sightings at camp.

Image

We took some time to chill, it being our last day and all.

The before dinner we went to check out the hyenas.

The high water bridge

Remember I said they were fussing about the den that morning?

Well we got there and there was not a single dog in sight. I switched the car off and right in front of me, a hyena bolted out of the den with a freshly killed WARTHOG! I could barely believe my eyes! He ran too far off for good pictures, but we were alone with a hyena who was devouring the entire animal. It was absolutely amazing.

That night we went on a night walk around the camp with Riana. I am going to find that owl, and I told her I needed to see that owl! So we looked at it’s usual spots but no luck.

Around camp we found a sleeping chameleon,

A sleeping Bulbul,

And some tree scorpions.

Image

We looked for the Scopsie too but no luck with him. The walk was about to end when Riana decided to look one more time at the Elephant Hall and with a stroke of luck, there was the screeching culprit. Couldn’t get a very good picture

But the point is that I found him! I could leave Letaba in peace. :)

It was time to leave Letaba.

That morning we packed up all of our things and took off down the H9 to Phalaborwa Gate. The hyenas from the den where nowhere to be seen. We only really had two sightings,

nervous impala

and a boy with huge tusks.

Image

I couldn't spot the Rufous-naped Lark I could hear calling but I found my first Fawn-coloured Lark.

At we journeyed back to the city I tried not to face my heartbreak at leaving one of my favourite places on earth, and off all things, these are what I miss the most...

Letaba has taken me by suprise and shown me, depsite my expectations, that northern sections of the park are serene and blissful in a way that is not experienced in the south. It is more remote and a deeper connection with nature is achieved. Two weeks in one place, and not once was I bored. I am a lady of the north now, with a piece of my heart firmly buried somewhere in a cool riverine forest next to the Letaba river, where the ringing call of a Woodland Kingfisher meets every orange sunrise over the sparkling water.
