   Time for the "Roll Call" again!
When I call your name just say 'Aay-hi'!

Thank you everyone who has taken time off to read my trip report and also for commenting here! It is much appreciated!
Pumbaa; DASSIEDELIGHT; charbel; Wildkyker; lion queen; john n poppie; Philip1; isinkwe; Wild about cats; Meandering Mouse; Trrp-Trrrrrr; hilda; Janeli; SurfCindy; laytea; vinkie & tedredum!

On the 6th September, we were back on our way from Tshokwane to Lower Sabie, when there was a road block. Unconventional this time, with all the cars on the (river) side of the road for over about 60 meters or so.

On an island in the Sabie river, about 100 meters away, I saw some lions!

Image

The more I looked, the more lions I saw!

Image

We counted and re-counted, fourteen all together! What a luck!

Image

Will they come through the river??

Then the leading lady got up and started walking all alone in the direction of the stream nearest to us. I was so excited, repositioned the Kombi and started shooting!

Image

The whole pride followed!

Image

Image

I have seen a video of lions wading in the Okavango river in Botswana, but for the first time I will actually see lions wading through water in the Sabie river in Kruger National Park.

Image

I did not want to wink my eyes for the fear of it not being real! They went in the water and with one hand I took a video (short), not to miss these photographs!

Image

She was still leading the pride with determination and out of the water!

Image

They all followed like a well drilled battalion.

Image

Now all out of the water.

Image

Lower Sabie delivered and we went to bed content on our last night of five at LS!

Image

To-morrow we will move camp to Satara with yet another first amazing sighting for us!

Thank you for all the interest shown in my trip report and for all your visits and wonderful comments!

We have finished our second spell of five nights camping all too soon, this time at Lower Sabie and we are moving camp for the next five nights to Satara.

Our lion tally is now 23, with two cheetahs, a civet, A small herd of sable antelope and all the other regulars!

It was early and slightly overcast and the light not perfect for good pictures, but animals sightings do not only “happen” when the light is perfect and I will certainly not complain!

Just outside LS camp and just beyond Sunset Dam, I could not believe my eyes when I saw all those buffalo's drinking water in the Sabie River facing me! Must be about 400 to 500 of them!

They were fare away, more than 100 meters, but my long lens was ready!

Image

I zoomed in a little more!

Image

There were also hippos in the river and I was curious to know how they would handle these buffalo's so near them?

Image

Image

Suddenly a big cloud of dust rose up from in between the buffalo's and they frantically started running from the river in all directions!

Image

There was a mighty commotion amongst them........and more dust!

Image

What could it be.......?? I grabbed my bino's and scanned the area!!!!
It can only be.................?????

Sorry DASSIEDELIGHT! ........and the winner is............

            :gflower: :gflower: :gflower:

@ PietSkiet:* CONGRATULATIONS!! If I had a prize to present, it would have been a free week in Kruger National Park for spotting that lion in my first photo!

@ NJVermaak: The same to you! Call it the second prize! Well done!

*BUT I would take Piet on all my future trips to the Wild places as a SPOTTER!

I must admit, that at the time it was happening I did not see the lion until after the dust commotion!

Here is the same photo again (this time with a red ring!)

Image

Now for the rest of that sequence of photos!

The lion came down for a kill but a couple of the old 'dagga boys' got hold of the lion and he came second best!

Image

On this photo the lion just runs away from the threat behind and all around him.

Image

The buffalo's followed him to where he was out of their reach on some rocks in the river!

Image

Then I saw him again, this time high on the rocks looking rather bedraggled!

Image

He seems to be totally frightened and on defence with his ears drawn flat to the side!

Image

Image

This confrontations the score is: Lion = 0 and Buffaloes 1

On our way to our third camp of our holiday and the third set of five nights, this time at Satara, we came across this rather strange confrontation between a young elephant bull and a buffalo.

Image

They followed one another across the road and continued their dispute.

Image

Image

Finally, the buffalo got the upper hand and the elephant backed off, turned around and walked away!

Image

We arrived at Satara and started putting up camp.

Image

This is the final result and our home for the next five nights!

Image

Our first evening at Satara with the setting sun.............

Image

…........and the 'braai fires' burning, we enjoyed the warm summer evening.

Image

We were happy to be in Kruger and content with another day with wonderful sightings.

Let's get the paper work done!

Ready for the “roll call' to see who is on board at this stage.
Thank you for making me enjoy writing this Trip Report and for all your kind observations and comments. Thank you one and all!

SurfCindy; Peregrin Falcon; Wild about cats; isinkwe; lion queen; Heksie; charbel; Skywalker2251; Janeli (sorry that we could not meet in KNP in Aug/Sept); Trrp-Trrrrrrr;
Meandering Mouse; hilda; Tawny; NJVermaak
(thank you for coming on board and for spotting the lion); barryels (I have just read your great trip report, but it is locked unfortunately); Mandinga; John n Poppy; Piet Skiet (well done again with the lion spotting!)

We are on our way for a breakfast at N'wanetsi via the S100 from Satara, but no cats to-day!

Image

After the waterbuck, we saw a giraffe with a young one.

Image

….and another view!

Image

Next up was this tawny eagle.

Image

Yellow-billed Stork

Image

At the Gudzani dam, we saw something very special. A Saddle billed stork with three chicks, rather big mind you! I do not think three chicks is the norm!?

Image

The breakfast at N'wanetsi in full swing!

Image

SO at the lookout!

Image

This is what we spotted from the look out!

Image

We went back to Satara via the H6 tarred road and saw more beautiful kudu's.

Image

It was early so we turned of towards Orpen Gate on the H7 to Nsemani dam where there was a heard of elephants drinking water.

Image

WE drove around the dam just in time to see the 'ellies' crossing the road.

Image

They had just finished their mud bath and was now applying the make-up!

Image

The number plate of a nature lover!

Image

Back at Satara and at our camp again with the make shift bird pond in front!

Image

End of yet another day in the wild places!

Image

We drove south from Satara camp to the Sweni road where we saw some zebras. Somehow they always look in top condition.

Image
Another view!

Image

Then we came across the lions! Lots of them! Some tourists in the area said they counted sixteen, but we only tally up the total that we all agree on and we counted eight (that we could clearly see)!

Image

More under another tree!

Image

Image

Some became restless and I was happy to take pictures while there was movement!

Image

….but not for long and they were back in the lazy mode again! One of them spotted something interesting in a nearby tree!

Good night from Satara!

@ hilda: Your imagination is running away with you, but if it was not for the lions in the same picture, I could have agreed with you!

@ Everyone stopping by in my TR I want to say thank you very much for all the wonderful remarks etc.!

Still operating from Satara, we went to Timbavati for a brunch. Just before the turn off from the main tarred road to Timbavati, we saw our second herd of buffalo's.

Image

Then we saw the lions eyeballing the buffalo's just off to the right of them.

Image

We left and after a while we arrived at the beautiful Timbavati Picnic area.

Image

After a nice brunch we took the so called Timbavati (S39) road north and came back via the Olifants/Letaba tarred road, but not before a few more photos!

Image

We stopped at the Ngotso Dam.

Image

…....and some of the smaller critters!

Image

More beautiful kudus.

Image

Then more kudu bulls arrived.

Image

Image

Back at camp, I made a very successful “potbrood”!

Image

…......and we went to bed for our last night at Satara!

Image

Good night!

We are about to start our 4th Five day Camp, this time further north in KNP at Letaba.

Image

The fairly dry , but beautiful Letaba river view from the Letaba restaurant.

Image

Image

Image

The first full day at Letaba, we took a day trip to Mopani for lunch. On the way to Mopani, we saw lots of elephant in the Letaba river!

Image

We stopped at the Pioneer dam bird hide for a leg stretch.

Image

The Mopani Camp Gate.

Image

The view from the decks at Mopani was as breath-taking as ever!

Image

The restaurant view over the Pioneer dam..........and food just tastes better here!

Will be back soon!

The restaurant view over the Pioneer dam..........and food just tastes better here!

Image

…..and a lot of waterbuck on one of the islands in the dam.

Image

A safe perch for the ducks!

Image

More views!

Image

Image

Image

We also took a stroll to the big Baobab tree inside the Mopani camp!

Image

….....and then we tried to measure it! Lol!

:gflower: :gflower: :gflower: Thank you all for your kind comments, making my TR a memorable one!!! :gflower: :gflower: :gflower:

We left Mopani and took the H14 tarred road to Phalaborwa gate and back to Letaba via the H9.
Just outside Mopani at the junction of the H1-6, we saw this elephant with some others.

Image

All the way from Mopani on the H14 to the junction of the Phalaborwa/Letaba road, we saw nothing but mopani bushes, very tall ant mounds and rolling Kruger Park hills and valleys.

Image

Image

Arriving on the H9 there was a three car road block, but we saw nothing in the tall grass.
We looked in the general direction where the other tourists had their bino's pointed at and then I saw just a movement in the grass........a spotted ear twitching!

We stayed for 20 min and nothing else.

I got impatient and remembered that my friend's cell phone ringtone was that of an irritable guinea fowl call!
I rang his number, with the cell phone at the open window.........and voila!!
The leopard sat up, searching where the irritable noise came from...........and I took these photos!

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

More and more cars arrived and we left for Letaba, but not before we saw four ground hornbills.

Image

Image

They were well groomed and ready for the afternoon outing!

Image

The Letaba sun set over a very content Cape based happy campers!

Still at Letaba, we drove south on the H1 – 5 to Olifantskop for a lunch on the deck overlooking the mighty Olifants River.

We stopped at the N'wamanzi Lookout over the Olifants river for a 'leg stretch'.

Image

Olifantskop camp is one of my favourite camps, BUT I must also admit that I feel like this moreor less at every other camp!

Image

Sitting on that deck under the big wild fig tree is so special!

Image

What is strange about this fig tree, is that the figs does not grow from the branches, but directly on the main tree trunk!

Image

Image

This crested barbet had a good look what we were eating!

Image

Image

This time around there were no elephants to be seen in the river from the vantage point!

Image

but if you scan the entire river below, one will find enough to take some photos!

Image

….or a crocodile and a hippo down below!

Image

One can just sit here and let the river flow slowly to pass to the sea!

Image

The bungalows overlooking the Olifants river.

Image

We drove back to Letaba via the S46 and just about five kms before the camp we saw.........lions!

Image

Image

Image

We left the lions and went back to our camp under the trees next to the tented chalets. What a privilege to be here!

Image

Image

End of another great day in KNP!

We stayed in the camp for most of the day, just enjoying the feeling of being in KNP.

Image

I saw this gecko on a tree on the sunny side and took this photo!

Image

He saw me and went around the tree into the shady side and changed colour within a second or so, adopting the grey colour of the bark on the reverse side. Is nature not simply mind boggling!

Image

We strolled around in the Letaba camp and just drank in the atmosphere!
We also visited the elephant museum.

Image

So good that this museum is kept in this tip top shape for future generations to see.

Image

Image

The huge tusks of an older generation of elephants that once roamed these woods!

Image

yours truly and SO comparing size!

Image

Back at base camp we heard an hyena where he was patrolling the fence as every other evening!

Image

The “bosbokkies” came right into the tent begging for food!

Image

Image

End of one more day at Letaba!

Image

Our last full day at Letaba and it is the 14th September, my Other Half's birthday. We have never been in Phalaborwa, so we decided to treat her there for lunch!

The Phalaborwa gate.

Image

On our return journey we stopped at Masorini Archaeological site.

Image

Image

A restored furnace for melting iron ore in centuries gone by.

Image

….and the Masorini picnic lapa!

Image

WE saw this lonely bull with only one tooth at the Masorini waterhole.

Image

….and another "ellie" drinking water in the Letaba river.

Image

…....and some Kudu bulls drinking water in the distance!

Image

Back at Letaba, we took a stroll through the camp.

Image

Some of the bungalow's.

Image

Image

….and a bush buck ram in the camp.

Image

It was a very hot afternoon, so we cooled off in the Letaba swimming pool the rest of the day!

Image

Our last evening at Letaba camp. We have now been in Kruger for 20 glorious days!
Next up: Shingwedzi!

     It is time to take a Roll Call again to see that everyone is still on board and comfortable with the ride through KRUGER.

I just want to personally thank everyone who took time off to stop by in my Trip Report and for commenting so regularly! It makes writing this so much more fun!
:gflower: :gflower: :gflower: :gflower: Thank you all! :gflower: :gflower: :gflower: :gflower:

Riaanf31; Son godin; barryels; SurfCindy; Heksie (Yes, it is our rubber snake on guard, helping to keep the monkeys at bay); Meandering Mouse; NJVermaak; isikwe; umtali1;
Cape of Storms; Kaapsedraai; QueenBee
(welcome on board); Wild about cats; tedredrum (Daron, staying, or rather camping in KRUGER for 30 days has been on our wish list for long – we always stayed in bungalows when we were still part of the working class);
hilda; lion queen; Trrp-trrrrrrr.

We are on our way to Shingwedzi for our 5th camp of five nights, unfortunately also our second last 5 day camp!

En route to Shingwedzi we stopped at the Grysbok waterhole. There we saw lots of zebras drinking water and our 3rd herd of buffalo's.

Image

Image

….and there was at least one juvenile zebra amongst them, but they all seemed to be chasing her away from the water.

Image

We drove on, but not too far, when for the third time we had to reverse a substantial distance, this time with our bush trailer, to avoid a confrontation!

Image

Not far from Shingwedzi, this very large herd of buffalo crossed the road in front of us! Our fourth big herd of the holiday!

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Turning off from the main road to Shingwedzi, this nyala ram ran across the road followed by some more.

Image

Shingwedzi at last.....................5 blissful nights!

Image

Our campsite right next to the camp kitchenette and near the ablutions!

Image

It was full moon......and we heard lions roar, almost the whole night!

Time for another episode, but first all the...... :gflower: :gflower: :gflower: thank you's........ :gflower: :gflower: :gflower: for all your kind comments!

Photo moments of Shingwedzi and surrounds!

We took a day trip north of Shingwedzi to the Babalala Picnic spot for brunch.

Image

The big tree and the imposing lapa is quite special!

Image

SO with the big tree through the middle of the lapa!

Image

Another kind of road block!

Image

If there is one thing that I can “tag” Shingwedzi with, it must be all the lone bull elephants we saw!

Image

Image

The “Eben Ethsebeth (Springbok lock)” of elephants! Young, but huge!

Image

Image

Spot the baby giraffe!

Image

Lilac breasted roller!

Image

….and a little credit to the 'bokkies'!

Image

….and September was hot, so we used this frequently!

Image

The well maintained Shingwedzi swimming pool!

Image

….and a Shingwedzi sunset!

Image
