Did You Know Image I 100% agree with Philip1Image
I have a friend (Foofootjie) who is very absent from the forumImage who I have now given proper instruction to Image up on this trip, if she wants to visit with us again , she will be tested big time on the "Did you know" parts of this excellent and informative report.

Stampajane - It would be interresting to find out why they differ so much in size. I could not find anything related to this though.

Trrp-trrrrrrrr - It would be sad if the world alows these magnificent creatures to go extinct.

Cape of Storms - It would be interesting to talk to the researcher who found out that the stripes of the zebra is not the same. That is a lot of stripes to count and match.

Mandinga - I am sure we will see much more cars now in future at the zebra crossings to match the strips.

onewithnature - he he he he he (No comment)

Meandering Mouse - It is worth the money to stay over at Jock to meet Lazarus and talk to him about nature. You might have to stay a few days and that will still not be anough.

isinkwe - The photo of the rhino does not do it justice. It was massive and to sit there quietly, and watching as it moves around in the veld was just amazing.

Philip1 - Thank you for the nice comments. The story I tell is just a small part of the biggest adventure Patatjie an I took to Jock Safari Lodge. It was a magical experience.

Valkoog - Welcome to the Forum Valkoog. Hope you enjoy the trip.

NetEk - Hope your mother enjoyed the story so far. It would be a great mother's day gift to take her there ...

isinkwe - I will then keep information going so that you have enough material for that test.

Pumbaa - It is weird how after you have seen the magnificent 7 on the first day, how everything slows down and nobody is chasing the next sighting. All the visitors on our cruiser was so relaxed and more than happy to watch the zebras... (matching the stripes to see if that fact is actually true...)

After the wonderful sightings of wild dog, zebra, rhino, impala, elephant, etc.. , it was time for a coffee break. Now one of the advantages of a safari drive with one of the Safari rangers, is that at some places you are allowed to get out and stretch the legs.

Lazarus knows the location of a "koppie" hidden in the veld only accessible to Jock visitors. He explained that the term koppie originate the Afrikaans as it looks like a metal coffee cup (upside down) used by the farmers and transport riders of earlier years. It just made sense to drink a "koppie" coffee on the koppie.

Did You Know? :hmz:
There are more than 4260 mammals species on earth. Also there are more than 6787 reptiles species, 9703 bird species and more than 28 000 fish species on earth.

The size and slope of the koppie did not look that big and steep until it was time to climb it. Lazarus promised that the view from the top would be worth the climb as one can see over the trees to the point where the massive mountain ranges break the horizon and fades away into a vast openness.

Everybody in the group was more than willing to climb the koppie and so we started carrying the coffee, rusks and other treats, to many to mention, up the hill. Putting each foot in front of the other, we started to climb...

Words cannot describe the view from the top of the hill. The Kruger is stretching as far as the eye could see in all directions. A slight wind is blowing making the air fresh and clean. The air is filled with different smells mixed by the waving branches of the massive trees down bellow.

The sun is starting to warm the rock all around us, and the only thing missing now is ...

"Coffee is ready." Lazarus said while pouring the liquid into metal koppies.

There are more than 10 000 centipede (duisendpoot) species in the world. Some species have between 80 and 400 feet.

Kruger is one of the greatest birding spots in South Africa, with more than half of the species found in South Africa occurring here in the Kruger.

Lovely video, it does give a great sense of the view.

Leeukop, I don't know why we don't have more contributions from the concession camps. I am enjoying this. All part of the greater Kruger.

After finishing our coffee on the koppie, it was time to go back to the cruiser. I saw this Black-headed_Oriole sitting in a tree just staring at us.

Image

Did You Know? :hmz:
The name Oriole, was derived from old French oriol, which in turn was derived from the Latin aureolus meaning yellow or golden.

As in the case with most co-operative breeders, the alpha pair in the magpie shrike family group only get assistance from the helpers when it comes to feeding the incubating female and the nestlings.

The giraffe is known as a "kameelperd" in Afrikaans which directly translate to Camel-Horse. The reason for this name is because the giraffe walks like a camel, but runs like a horse.
