Coming in close to gate closing time, we saw an elephant ahead of us on the narrow dirt road. We stopped, and then backed up as he approached us. And then we backed up up a steep dirt road, hoping we wouldn't be late (but we knew there were a few cars behind us). One of the cars came up and we motioned them up next to us while we watched the elephant. By then he was a few feet off the road, ripping branches off a tree. To us he looked grumpy still, but the other car felt safe enough to drive past him. Once they made it past safely, we went too. No pictures as we were too busy getting out of there safely!

before returning for lunch and packing. We headed up the S126, with elephant

and lilies

and redbill hornbill

I had never been to Transport Dam, so we took a detour there – plenty of general game, and some flowers

We headed back east, but then someone told us of some lions 1-2 km further west so we turned around and found 3 females

Then it was S65 and the Kruger gate, with one sighting of European bee eater (true last sighting was impala and zebra)

We shopped at the community store at the Paul Kruger gate. But that wasn’t the end yet! We had 3 nights at Notten’s bush camp, in the Sabi Sands reserve adjacent to Kruger park. The big attraction to going to a private reserve is they can drive off road to follow animals, and the animals are habituated to the vehicles. In case we hadn’t seen any leopard in Kruger (entirely possible), and to have a few days of being driven around and fed well, I like to end a trip here. Although if we knew how great our sightings would be, we may have saved the money!
