As you guessed correctly about the topic, I hope you've had that cooooool drink or two.

Thank you very much umtali1 and inyanga1 ,ImageImageImage, I too have family living in the UK, they also do as much as possible to talk about rhinos,- A little off your report------------
My Grandmother really loved the Kruger and all its benefits to her health, she still travelled from UK to visit us(maybe) and the Kruger(definitely) at the young age of 94 , Her biggest wish was to see her Great Grandchildren while they were Krugerparking , I am so pleased she did - She has since passed away and my Grandmother's ashes have been scattered in Kruger. A place she loved the most, she really enjoyed Krugerparking with her South African family. She too spent many hours talking to her friends in the UK about Kruger , and I believe that her annual visits to Kruger kept her in good health for many years. Every sighting was very special and exciting for her as it is for me , my parents and my children, she loved Image the most.

I am also back in the bus  .

I do agree that water can be devastating if you look at the pictures  . SANParks did a great job to enable for the camps to be open so soon afterwards  .

Love all your rhino :cam: , especially the little one :D .

I see that you also had a wonderful Black rhino sighting as well   .

Thanks for sharing  .

Landscapes – so Mokala, so Kruger

It’s time to share some general landscape shots of both Mokala and the Kruger.

Mokala’s scenery is of semi-arid savannah with rocky outcrops and semi-desert woodlands, and open plains in the north.

The first three photos are of the kopjies north of, but not far from, Mosu Lodge in the southwest of the park.

Image

Image

Once past the rocky outcrops the soil was more Kalahari sand and the terrain a lot flatter. These next scenes were not far from the Stofdam bird hide near the brilliant Kameeldoring picnic spot.

Image

Image

Image

We think we are correct in saying that this is the blackthorn in flower at Kameeldoring.

Image

Now moving on to the Kruger where we find majestic baobabs in the north.

Image

And the avenue of fever trees near the Pafuri picnic site nearby.

Image

Image

Around Pretoriouskop a familiar scene

Image

The Letaba River along the S93

Image

And finally, we have a very peaceful riverside scene near Letaba.

Image

We hope we have shown you some scenery that is typical of each park. Many of you will be familiar with those in the Kruger. Perhaps the scenes in Mokala will encourage people to visit this little gem of a park.

These are just a small sample from two parks. Elsewhere in SA there is everything from desert to forest to coastline to mountains – a world in one country.

In the next nugget we shall be showing something that we have only ever seen in documentaries…….

Thanks everyone :gflower: We were surprised by your comments because most people don't put up :cam: of landscapes on the forum. They concentrate on the animals. After all the vegetation is an important part of the eco-system.

Very pleased that some of you feel inspired to visit Mokala

Hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

What are they looking at?

As we were driving up along the S41 we came across these vultures keeping an eye on some proceedings from a distance

Image

Around the bend we followed some zebra going down to the river. Then we noticed that they were very hesitant going off the river bank so we had a closer look. Then we realised what they had seen……. Can you see what they saw????

Image

We rank this next sequence as possibly the top nugget of the holiday .

As you can imagine, when a very large number of vehicles have assembled in one spot, you know something dramatic is going on. Perhaps the vultures that we saw in a previous nugget give us a clue…..
We are letting the pictures do the talking of this event near Satara. You MAY need to look very closely as there is a lot more than you think…..

Image

Did you see the two jackals, the male lion, the cubs and the lioness with a bloody face?

Just after the first picture we glimpsed a lioness’ attempt to bring down a buff in an enormous herd.
A few buffalo obviously had different ideas about the lions getting a dinner. We realised that some of the buffs had surrounded the stalkers which then dashed into the thicket. After a few minutes we saw at least five cubs watching all that was happening, eventually to be led to safety by a lioness and another that escaped from the thicket.
We couldn’t wait to see the outcome as it was getting dark and the gate deadline was beckoning.
This sort of behaviour we had only ever seen on TV and never thought that we would ever witness such an extraordinary event.

On another day a collection of cars can only mean one thing…….

Image

doing what it does best.

In case any of you wonder the absolute top nugget for me is any sighting of a leopard.

We hope you enjoyed this chapter.

We shall be winding up our nuggets in the next episode with very mixed feelings……..

What a very exciting episode Umtali1!  I remember, if you didn't tell us about the Lions, we would have missed it. They were far away and the grass was long, and we couldn't understand why all the animals looked in the same direction! But we didn't see what you saw! Great sighting, superbly captured!

Sleeping or not, that is a stunning Leopard!
