Thanks for your kind comments and pleased you like birds
tent dweller, isinkwe, Pumbaa, mosij (thanks for the ID) , Hilda (thanks for the ID), Super Mongoose(welcome back) , Bushbuddies ( aah Pafuri lodge !) , umtali1, barryels

After Nyala road,we wanted to see a place we love and where we have very good memories. It's the bridge on Levuvhu river by the entrance of Pafuri lodge in the Makuleke community. The first time we stayed in a lodge in Kruger was in Pafuri lodge when they opened a few years ago and since then we were lucky to come a few times.
We were very shocked and very sad when we saw on the forum the pictures, posted by Johan if I remember well, of the camp totally destroyed by the flood in january this year (happily no casualties)
Last time we stayed in Pafuri was in may 2012 and we were first in the lodge and then we did the Pafuri walking trail (Could be another Trip Report...)

It's always magic when you reach the bridges on Levuvhu river.
We could still see last august the damages from the flood. And it was strange to see this road totally empty as usually we were used to meet cars crossing.
Image

We stopped on the bridge

Sand on the road and parts missing

But what a view

It's so nice to be in Pafuri with you dear readers :gflower: :gflower: :gflower: and dear
tent dweller, hilda, CoS, isinkwe, umtali1, Kaapsedrai (welcome back), Philip 1

After this passionate love story let's go back where we were before this tender digression : on Levuvhu bridge.

Animals came back after the flood even if the damages were still important in this area but remember it was in august that is to say only 6 months after this tragic event.

I was looking for one of the birds I was lucky to see each time I came around Pafuri
And here he (she) was, coming directly from her/his hairdresser

Image

A crested guineafowl

Then two

Image

And three

Image

Four ...

Image

Goronta, we should stop

Some impies were resting on the sand we could find everywhere out of the riverbed.
Sand color on sand :D

Dear Pafuri line passengers

isinkwe, umtali1, Pumbaa, barryels, hilda,tent dweller, Trrp-trrrrrrrr, MM :D

I speed up a little bit as I know most of you are going to different parks very soon
and I would like to end this journey to Pafuri before the end of 2013 (to prepare the next TR, beginning of 2014  )

But my driving not being "fast and furious", we still have a few episodes before we reach the exit gate.

Still on Levuvhu bridge I had a look down to the river to see those inhabitants or visitors

A baby monitor( ? )sunburning on the wooden deck

Image

Some birds drinking (Help for ID birders teachers :D )

Image

A canary hiding (brimstone ?)
Image

A shaft-tailed whydah female (I'm not so sure  )

Image

Nessie ?

Image

No a huge croc splash

Image

A last glimpse at the baobab ,sentinel on duty by the bridge

Image

And we realized ,or our stomach did , busy as we were, that we did not have any lunch so far.
S.O proposed to go back to Pafuri picnic spot as it was very quiet at our first coffee break in the morning for a light lunch before driving home to Punda Maria.

It was indeed very peaceful on the morning....

Thanks for your kind comments umtali1 ,Trrp-trrrrrrrr :D

Finally, we arrived at Punda Maria camp after a long and active day, a life in one day

What a day !

We were welcomed by a gang of clever vervet monkeys

A little bit tired we watched the burning sky :cam:

where we started to pack as we had to change to another tent for the last night. :wall:

When booking on line I could add a third night but the only unit available was the ST2Z and
on arrival we were told at the reception by a young lady (a trainee as I discovered later on) that we should move for the last night. :hmz:
Rather boring to pack everything in the car only for one night but... :slap:

Tomorrow will be our last day in Kruger
We will start by Mahonie loop and then to Pafuri picnic place again.
Remember all other roads around were still closed beginning of august

It's kind of you :k
Thank you
Pumbaa, barryels, tent dweller, MM

One day left and tomorrow we will leave Kruger for another destination and another park ...
But as you noticed in the previous episodes, one day for us in Kruger is almost a "full life" with a lot of sightings  , that means still a few instalments to come.

The car was packed and we will unpack tonight in the new unit we will be allocated :slap:

Our plan for the day was Mahonie loop, back to Punda for a nice breakfast then to Pafuri picnic place,Levuvhu bridge and to the lodge Outpost to say hello to an old friend and back to Punda tented camp.
A nice program full of promise :D
Full tank,full car,full batteries for camera,full ... ? :hmz: :D full of hope , :cam:

on the road we were, first at the gate opening.
I like that kind of loop around rest camp and Mahonie or Mahogany loop (S99) was a first for us.
The route of 28 km is according to The Prime Origins Guide to Exploring Kruger by Hilton-Barber and Professor Lee R. Berger (by the way a guide I do recommend) : "renowned for plants and animals that are rare elsewhere in the Park"

We hoped we would spot the tiny suni antelope or Sharpe's grysbok but we did not succeed this time.
An other good reason to go back to the North as soon as possible

We started the loop counterclockwise for the light.
This untarred road was rather quiet and we spotted immediately an antelope but too big to be the small suni
It was a common duiker (why common ?)

Image

It was moving all the time...

Image

And it was rather difficult to get a sharp shot

Image

As usual in this region we saw a lot of birds
This always photogenic clever drongo

Image

I like this one
