But the hide was closed as they were renovating the roof.
The landscape around the river is rather peaceful with the resident hippos

Then we crossed the river back to the main road but we were stopped by this little blockroad : A Black crake chick

Thanks for reading the last episode and correcting my confusion between Red Hartebeests (I'm still addicted to KTP) and Tsessebe
 umtali1,hilda,tent dweller,Pumbaa,isinkwe

We kept on seeing grazers in this plain
After zebra in the distance,

some wildbeasts

and "headless ostrichs" plus one :hmz:

I'm always interested in seeing those bones here and there. It always reminds me the extraordinary stories I read when a child on mythic elephants'graveyard

And a quiet pipit

We were really enjoying the morning but a sign reminded us we still had a long road to Punda Maria

Image

Next stop : a ligne we all love to cross .I think I have a lot of pictures of this famous place I crossed many times in the last 10 years...

Thanks a lot for your kind support and comments

hilda,barryels,tent dweller,Trrp-trrrrrrrr,MM,umtali1,gatita,Bushbuddies

From the Mooisplassloop we went to Tropic of Capricorn loop to reach the Tropic of Capricorn monument.
Even if we were many times at this place,it 's a kind of ritual to make a brief stop and take one or two shots on the line (then we can see year after year how we changed ! )

Image

Image

Then we went north

Image
A beautiful long neck was strolling by the road.

Image

Some passengers

Image

Somes scratches on the long neck, some cats ?

Image

We decided to stop for fuel and checked the camp after this dramatic flood of january.

Image

At that time (beginning of august, there was still a lot to do.)
We took time discussing with people from the camp who told us how they lived this tragic event. It's different from photos when you listen to witnesses who were there when all happened .
It was a real tragedy !
The restaurant was still closed

Image

Image

We could see on the bridge the damages of the flood

Image

We spotted the first of a nice family of ground hornbills

Super TR with such a variety of photos.

Yes umtali1, I think you're right,it could have been around Tihongonyeni.

Our ground horbills were walking along the road

One ...

then the rest of the family

Image

And we often forget they are birds and.... they can fly

Image

A brief stop to find our position

Image

Still a few kilometers to Punda Maria but enough time before the gate closes for a small cup of coffee at Babalala
We love this place well maintained and you're always greeted by a warm welcome by the attendant.
No activity at the picnic spot but a beautiful sky around with fleecy clouds

Image

Image

Back to the H1-7,we decided to take for the first time the Dzundzwini loop (S 58),a rather narrow untarred road.
We climbed up the hill before the Dzundwzini spring and enjoyed the view

As far as the eye can see ...

We're approaching our final destination :D ,still a few episodes to go dear bus riders

tent dweller,Trrp-trrrrrrrr,MM,hilda,isinkwe,barryels,gatita

Up the hill ,the view was stunning.

Image

After a few shots,we drove down to the spring where we met some ellies enjoying water and mud.

Image

What a nice bath !

Image
This loop we discovered is worth visiting.I recommend to all of you if you're are around to have a look at this easy untarred road.
But sometimes you will face some roadblock as this nice ellie ,peacefully eating in the middle of the road.

Image
We waited for this guy to clear the way,10 minutes,20 minutes,30 minutes

Image
and then due to time constraint, we gave up and went back to the main road to reach Punda Maria.
As we all agree,Punda Maria camp is out of age
Image

and when entering this northern camp it's a time sleep with an atmosphere of Kruger as I imagined it could have been at the beginning

Image

We were allocated tent number 7 for the 2 following nights and then we will have to change for the last night to another tent :hmz: :hmz:

Image

Another full day was little by little vanishing through a burning african sky ...

Image

Our days in Kruger are so rich and active , I always have the feeling, when night is coming , I lived a full life in one day.

Tomorrow we will spend the day around Pafuri but tomorrow will be tomorrow ...
Good night
BACK SOON

We are close to our final destination dear travelers
umtali1, tent dweller, hilda, barryels, Trrp-trrrrrrrr, Pumbaa, Janeli (welcome) , isinkwe, Philip 1

We had a nice dinner at Punda Maria restaurant , we wanted to try the restaurant as it was the first time we spent the night in Punda and also we were too tired or too lazy to braai :hmz:
The food and the service ,under the supervision of James, was good and efficient.A nice evening indeed :D
And after a refreshing sleep,it was time to be on the road again

Dawn was so misty
We felt lonely
Ambling to Pafuri...

Image

What a strange feeling to be"lost" in the mist. We were very careful on the road to avoid any unexpected crossing

Image

A sentry was on duty

Image

Then two other "misty" sentinels

Image

Where are we ?

Image

All of a sudden a hole in the mist and a ground hornbill appeared
Mist, rocks, trees,no car on the road :it was exactly the bird we needed to add the final touch to this fairy early morning

Image

This 2013 journey to Kruger was really for us the year of rhino, leppies and ground hornbills.
We were very lucky to spot a lot of them
This time they were 3 patrolling

Image

"Hands in his back" one of them was carefully listening

Image

Another seemed to look for a lost object :hmz:

Image

Then through the mist we arrived at

Image

The waterhole was busy with a large herd of buffies

Image

Then a festival of stunning baobab trees and impies !

Image

Such impressive trees !

Image

"Never go to the North guys ,there is nothing to see,it's cold, misty , very few animals.
Please, please stay in the south you will not regret it !

Goronta you're a liar, you're not fair

Thanks a lot for your kind words and comments :D
Philip1, umtali1, tent dweller, Pumbaa, isinkwe, Cape of Storms, hilda, Mandinga,Kaapsedrai, Trrp-trrrrrrrr

We finally reached one of the best places in the park (at least for S.O and myself) Pafuri picnic place.
This spot is magic for us and during the 3 nights we stayed in Punda Maria we came everyday spending time watching the river ,birds ,nature and animals.
It was different everyday with few visitors one day and a lot the day after (but this will be part of a next episode...)
We feel so attracted by Pafuri that when we decided to have a Memory bench erected for a very close friend of us who passed away last year, we did not hesitate one second. It should be at Pafuri picnic place and it is (since last week) but this story will be part also of a next chapter...
For those of you who never went to Pafuri picnic place, let me show you some pictures

Image

Image

A memory bench

Image

A picnic place and no braai !

Image

And this place will not be totally the same without Frank, the genial birder who knows everything and any bird around the place.

Image

We were not so lucky because when we were there, beginning of august ,he was on annual leave and we could not chat with him.Anyway it will be for next time !

Image

from the place we have a nice view on the Luvuvhu river with some lazy crocs

Image

A big boy, the sandpiper disappeared :hmz:

Image

Baboons are often by the river

Image

And velvet monkey waiting for any occasion...

Image

Let's sit on this bench and enjoy the view.......

Thank you all of you for being on board :gflower: :k
barryels, tent dweller, MM, Trrp-trrrrrrrr, hilda,umtali1, isinkwe, Philip1, gatita

From the bench, the view is open and you can spend hours looking at Luvuvhu river.

Image

We could see the damages around Pafuri after the terrible flood in January,

Image
with some roads still closed when we were there last august like the road going to Crooks Corner

Image
After this long brak at pafuti picninc spot we went to nyala road, a loop always full of surprises
The first encounter leaving the picnic place was some impies sleeping under a sun rather shy

Image

Image

We started Nyala loop

Image

Why is it called Nyala loop ? :hmz:

Majestic baobab tree and acacia

Image

And the second gem of Pafuri : birds

Birds ! Birds

I read somewhere that Frank set up a list of more than 267 birds he spotted at Pafuri picnic place only ! :sup:
Everywhere birds !
It's in Pafuri when staying at Pafuri lodge a few years ago that we started to become birds lovers (Thank you Alweeth  )
I will need some support from the experts to ID the first one.
