After checking in a Berg-en-Dal, we unpacked the car and relaxed for a bit. I had some laundry to do, and after the long drive, my son and I decided to stay in camp for the afternoon.

My SO went to Matjulu waterhole, and spent some time with the bee eaters and some ellies.

We settled for a nice braai, and a visit by some ellies to the fence.

John - it was sad, but the buff would not have been able to recover from his injuries, so I have mixed feelings about the ranger's actions. I know he got permission from the section ranger, and I guess the policy is to interfere if the injury is caused by humans, but we had to admire the resolve of the buff to keep moving.

I imagine they left the carcass at the dam so I am sure that visitors had some good predator and scavenger sightings in the days following the 28th.

29th July Berg-en-Dal: our last full day in the park

We did the following route: tar to the main rd, then north to S118, S114, H2-2 and breakfast at Afsaal.

It was an overcast, cool and windy day. We saw a family of ellies near Berg-en-Dal. We had heard lion the previous night but did not find them. Just after Ampie se Boorgat, we came across a family of five ground hornbills. Two of the birds were ringed and we made a note of the rings to report the sighting back at camp. It seems they have ringed some juveniles and are tracking where they are found, behaviour and how many in group.

We continued on to the H2-2 where we saw quite a few buffalo and some good general game. We stopped at Afsaal for breakfast and were pleasantly surprised. Much better than the last visit. After breakfast we returned to camp via the S11- Matjulu loop.

Later that day we did the Matjulu loop again and visited the waterhole. The overcast conditions made it tough for photography, and the animals were not so active, possible due to the wind. We did see some ellies and some general game.

A warthog - pity about the bottle lying nearby. So much for not drinking in the park....

30th July - leaving the park

We had finally reached the end of our time in the Kruger. It is always bittersweet. Good memories, sad to leave but happy to return home.

We had flights to catch from OR Tambo later that day, so we had a short drive in the morning. We did the Matjulu loop, starting on the tar and returning via the dirt road. We saw ellies, general game and some birds.

Ellie - he may have been in musth, but he was reasonably relaxed.

We returned to camp to have a quick breakfast and pack up. Then onto the gate. A quick stop at the gate to pack up the camera equipment and it was time to leave.

It was not the best trip that we have ever had, we had some tough days from a gameviewing perspective, but we had some wonderful moments. Just being there is relaxing. There is nothing quite like being in the bush - the smells, the sounds, the peace....

Till next time :yaya:

Kaapsedraai, thank you. We had to wait till the end of the holiday for a star trail because of the moon, and then we had cloudy evenings...

A big :thanx: to all the members who took the time to read the TR and to comment. Your encouragement helped keep the bus moving.

Hope you enjoyed the ride.
