And that's how it started,
"What ? Have you not been to the Kruger" :sup: :sup: ( my question to a good friend from work)
How is it possible that you live in SA and have never been Krugerparking? Have you got a tent? No problem , I have one for you :D
The excuse I was looking for, LET THE PLANS BEGIN :D
I check out the calendar , pick a time out of holiday season, check the moon phases, time of year for water availability for the animals, also checked the tides at the coast just because they were available (still don't know why), and eventually decided on the soonest available booking that I managed to get at Lower Sabie. I thought that in April it would be good to stay close to permanent water, I have heard that animals quite like the stuff :o
Now to tell SO, she was just as excited as I was.
Love taking NEWBIES to the Park.
Could not sleep ,the night before departure, tossed and turned and eventually got out of bed at 11 pm, only to find SO and the Newbie, having coffee and waiting for me. Hitched the caravan and hit the road just before midnight. Big pressure on me now, what happens if I am " in the wrong place at the wrong time" ?

The road driving down was an absolute nightmare. From Benoni we picked up the famous N4 mist, added to that, plenty roadwork's, single lanes, no road markings, and if there were any warning signs, think they must have been taken to the nearest scrap metal dealer :wall:
Average speed between Benoni and Belfast was about 70 km/h. Quite stressful when towing a caravan during the night. Not the most favourable conditions :naughty:
Eventually arrived at the gate at 6.30 am

Image

Quite disappointed that we had missed out on an extra half hour of Krugerparking.
But on the plus side, we thankfully arrived unscathed.

It did not take long to find my first idiot. The fool was taking a stroll from the gate down to the bridge

Image

Could not believe my eyes

So now we have arrived. What will the Kruger dish up for us this time?

With that hectic drive behind me, left at the gate with the rat race, relaxation, calm, would be the order for the next couple of days :D
For starters I stopped and received some good advice from this Panther Agate Snail.

Image

about the best possible pace for the Kruger park.
The road up to Lower Sabie did not produce a lot of game, but our newbie was delighted when we found this guy

Image

Fortunately for me Giraffe were at the top of newbie's wish list. So far so good, but I had been explaining that in Kruger one cannot guarantee anything,

Our Newbie was amazed by the whole spectacle of Kruger that we as regulars sometimes take for granted.

Image

Image

This what I think is a Tree Agama welcomed us to lower Sabie

Image

This was home for the next couple of days

Thank you for your nice comments:

Went for a short drive in the afternoon to see what we could find for Newbie, and ourselves.

Image

Newbie was quite amazed about this new world all around her, her wish list was starting to change, cats were moving up her list. Everything we saw was her favourite :D
A short stop at sunset dam for a bit of quiet time.

Image

Time to get back to camp, getting rather tired now from the drive to Kruger and have been on the go for 19 hours now.
Got the fire going for supper

Image

Rump steak is always good on the fire

Image

Supper time

And then off to bed, early start tomorrow
Wonder what Kruger will show us tomorrow :hmz:

Early start, up at 4 , cant wait to get out the gate a 6.
Very quiet, bush is very thick, making spotting quite difficult, but that not does nothing to dampen the excitement and enthusiasm in the car.
Drive for more than an hour, enjoying the smell and peacefulness of Kruger, there is no place in the world like this, for me anyway.
Eventually found this guy, Newbie was very pleased

Image

and then this was lucky

Image

In the rear view mirror I spot these side stripped jackal , manoeuvre the car to try and get a picture, because they don't usually hang around for long

Image

They must be hanging around the lions for something :hmz: Maybe a kill somewhere :hmz:
A quick scan in the trees for vultures to maybe to reveal a clue :?
Nothing, no Hyena or give away sounds, all is quiet
Moved the car passed a bush to try and get a better view of the lions and found this on the other side of the bush

Image

right next to road in plain site  :D

Image

Image

After a very quiet start to the day, things were rapidly improving for us. Not only was Newbie overly excited, pleased and amazed , so were SO and I . A kill virtually on the road
...............
And then this young fellow arrived: :D

This young fellow arrived

Image

He was under the very same bush, that we moved around, we did not even see him

Image

Image

All this took place no more than 3 meters from the vehicle :sup: I have never been as lucky as this in all my travels to Kruger, Am beginning to think that Newbie is a seriously good luck charm.

I think these lions must have taken this buffalo down in the early evening, and were getting ready for the second sitting, if they could stomach it,

Another car arrived, and he decided that it was time for some privacy while he was getting ready for round number 2

Image

Image

Image

This young fellow took his breakfast , dragged it around the bush

Image

Image

In the car we are all amazed at what we are witnessing , Newbie asks for the camera,(or demanded  ), something about a better view, :D I do not argue. Her excitement is overwhelming , Although this is one of luckiest sightings SO and I have ever had, we get more pleasure from Newbie's excitement. Now I have a Krugerparker in the making :D
As usual , I am constantly scanning the surroundings , (for safety reasons) this lady walks right in front of the car>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> :D

Thank you all for your nice comments: very much appreciated.
Not only was this the first visit to Kruger for Newbie , it is also my first attempt at a trip report, so I guess that makes me a Newbie too :D ( now I know I was supposed to pay attention to my teaches at school  )
Be that as it may, lets continue our journey:

While watching the young male re arrange his breakfast table, this girl walked right across the road in front of the car

Image

Image

to join the others for her share of breakfast, if she could fit any more food in her stomach

By this time, our tummies were also starting to growl , and not wanting the lions to think there was a rival pride on the way , we head on to Mlondozi to sort out our own breakfast. On the way we find a Kori Bustard

Image

Image

Image

Mlondosi has a magnificent setting to enjoy, very relaxing indeed

Image

This fish eagle was also flying about and deciding what he would like for breakfast

Image

With breakfast seemingly on everything's mind, I set about making food and feeding Newbie, SO and myself

Image

Please excuse us while we stop here for a quick bite :D

Hi Izinkwe,

Now I am also onboard for your awesome trip report. I can't wait to read more about it. Btw guys, the breakfasts/luches every day as well as the dinners were superb. My mouth is watering for another trip to the KNP as well as a rump steak, specially done by Izinkwe, who is an awesome braaimaster!

All my love

Newbie :cam:

Thank you all for your nice comments:
After a good breakfast , and all the dishes done by Newbie   , ( I am good at making dishes dirty, but not very good at cleaning them :wall: ) we continue our journey

Image

Image

and yet more giraffe for Newbie

Image

then we found elephant

Image

Newbie was overjoyed, we were in the middle of a breeding herd, had to keep an eye out for where they all were, last thing that is needed is to be trapped by the spread out herd, eventually found a safe distance from what looked like to be the last elephant :hmz: ( I was right)

Image

a safe distance, does not always allow for the best photo opportunities , but that is the price we have to pay instead of irritating or upsetting the animals, other safer photo opportunities will always become available in Kruger

Image

Water monitor

Image

next generation of Egyptian Geese

Image

A strange and first sighting for me, Leopard and buffalo wearing sunglasses
must be the hip teenagers

Image

and then back to camp to get the

Image

for supper

One of our camping neighbours must have thought the light too bright, I thought it needed a face :hmz:

Hi Isinkwe,

I don't think I have ever laughed so much when I saw the animals with "sunglasses" on at the sighting board. That was one of many many highlights I had with you on our trip. I enjoyed every single animal that we saw. (sorry for hogging your camera). I even enjoyed the different trees (I know, I know, even the dead ones), and seeds lying around, and the little bugs, and birds and all the tiny creatures we saw in camp.

Thank you for opening my eyes to a whole new wonderful world :k :k :k

Now....carry on with your awesome trip report.....you have more followers.

Newbie :cam: :cam: :cam: :cam:

Next morning we head out again in anticipation of Kruger's offerings :D

Image

Image

Image

Like I told Newbie yesterday, " we are sure to find a safer, but closer photo opportunity with elephants", which now, since she saw the baby elephants are now her favourites. This is really becoming quite easy to please her :D

Image

and maybe just a bit closer, 8)

Image

Some zebra's

Image

grazing with the unmentionables in the back ground

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

who is watching who?

Image

The morning was quiet and peaceful, not many other vehicles about. I stop the car. Newbie, in extreme anticipation" WHAT, WHERE, WHAT IS IT, I CAN'T SEE IT"
And so the next lesson begins for Newbie :D

I turn the engine off ,
"Listen to THAT" I say---------------"What is it?????, Newbie enquires enthusiastically!!! :? :?

This Newbie is " The sound of Kruger, relax and enjoy, and while you do , pour us each another coffee" :) :) and pass the biscuits.
Lesson Learned

Hi Isinkwe,

The moment you turned off the car, and everything went dead quiet around me, was the moment I fell in love with the Kruger....I was at peace with myself, and my world and everything in it, and around it. I know it sounds cliché...but it was a defining moment in my life.

I cannot thank you enough. :k

Good plan with the bananas, you won't be sorry, just keep your eyes open, these guys like them too, and will take them from your plate, or the skottle (pan) even when they are cooking,in the blink of an eye.

Image

Lucky that was not from our table- but it did scare the people near us almost to death, it took the banana directly from the child's hand and was gone in a flash.

I , the same as you , as I am sure many Krugerparkers are , looking for the perfect Kruger word :hmz:
Could be interesting , to try and describe the Kruger in one word :hmz: :hmz:

Kruger has a way of dissolving a person deep into their own thoughts- SO and I often drive for hours without a word spoken, yet we are at peace.

Newbie who is with us this trip, was also dissolved into her own thoughts, many kilometres went by without a word spoken- That is Kruger, but how does one describe it.

The only way to find out- keep going back and maybe one day we will find the answer :D
