Sorry all, I wanted to write this yesterday already.........
I have the kind of work that gets me onto the long road from time to time, which results in me always trying to fit in a national park along the way if I can. It is usually a one-night-stand and I have managed to get to most of our national parks over the years.....bar for some that are really out of the way. One park that has eluded me is Mountain Zebra, but I managed to get there on Tuesday night earlier this week.........so here is a brief account of my one-night-stand.

After leaving home early on Tuesday, I was already halfway to the Eastern Cape when I realized I left my camera battery on charge in my office. I'm not a hot-shot photographer, but always have my camera and lens with me on these trips, which meant I was already dreading the prospect of getting to Mountain Zebra and not being able to capture pics of good sightings. I was reduced to my cell phone camera.........its like being asked to compete in the Durban July on a donkey!!! But alas I had no choice.

I got to the park late afternoon and on the drive in to camp saw some of the more common antelope. For those that have not been at Mountain Zebra before, the camp is comfortable and well laid out. All in all a nice experience.

When I travel to these parks, I have a very standard (very delicious) meal.

I'll be posting the great sightings of the next morning shortly.

While packing the car just before gate opening at 7, my day was made by the roar of a lion in the valley below the camp. I got my exit permit and I could not have been 50 m out of the gate when I found the two simba boys next to the road. Sorry for the poor cell phone camera pics! They were clearly on the move and didn't stick around for more than a couple of minutes.

From the lion sighting I did the Kranskop Loop (great new roads). The views over the wide expanse rivals the views in any other national park.

Following the early morning on Kranskop, I ventured onto the Umgeni 4x4 route. Found this cryptic creature along the way.......can anyone find and ID it?

Oh dear Waterbuck, :( :( :( I know the feeling. I did exactly the same on my first trip to Mount Zebra. I was utterly dismayed when I saw the beauty of the Park and could not capture it on camera.

Non the less, I am enjoying your images. This really is a special, magic place. I call it soul country.

Waterbuck, lovely TR and t is great you doing one. I love this park, although only been there once. Hope to get there again soon. :D

You have done well with the cell...and amazing pics around, the lions and scenic views - really something different one had to experience.
