We are finally back home and I can really say Home sweet home! Never mind how much you enjoy your holiday, your own place is still the best(except for Kruger of course).

So the journey began on 14 Dec 2012 when we left Cape Town for our biggest dream ever!
We stopped for 2 nights in Struisbaai and left there on the evening of the 17th en route to Durban.
This is where we met up with close friends of ours that would join us for this adventure!

We did the necessary shopping and was ready to leave at 3am on 20 Dec
Our plan from the start was to drive via Swaziland, so armed with passports and all the necessary docs (Thanks to Elsa and the posts on the forum) we drove off.

The first border stop was a bit of a nightmare...took about an hour but the other 3 wasn't to bad. They did search both cars and the trailor but we didn't have any problems and we had some meat and milk and a few other things in the cooler. Once through we stopped at Komatipoort for lunch and the last big buy before we would enter.

I think we finally entered at 14:03

All along I was wondering what our first animal would be but I never imagined it being a wildebeest. We saw it even before we got to the official gate.

To be continued......

Thank you for all the lovely comments and especially Hilda for help to turn the page....

Friday 21 December Morning

Never thought I would enjoy waking up at 5am in the morning......guess that’s what Kruger does to one :D

We probably left camp at about 5:15 and took the road towards Skukuza as we planned to do breakfast at Nkuhlu picnic spot. Our route for the morning was H4-1, S30, and S128. It was so refreshing driving that time of the morning that it didn’t really bother us that we didn’t see much at first.....but oh boy...or should I say almost man

Image
Lion

Next we saw one of my favourite birds

Image
Birdie

We saw about 5 Kingfishers on the bridge but the pics were a bit too far and blurry. Next we saw this very cute but shy creature

Image
Shy one

We had a lovely time at the picnic spot! No monkey interruptions at all! They have a lovely fully stocked shop there as well. We were the second car there and could really enjoy the peace and quiet. We only had one visitor who wanted something to nibble on but sorry to say there was nothing for him.....

Image
Thief

In general I don’t like the following flying creature but those eyes!!!!!

Image
Eyes

Just before the S30 turnoff we came across a long lost family member....

Image
family

We saw so many babies and young ones during our visit. Just couldn’t resist taking these

Image
young ones

We saw very little buffs compared to our previous trip, but did see this one in his true nature

Image
Buff

We spent a lot of time with the next young one when mister suddenly decided he was boss and charged!!!!
Luckily we were very cautious the entire time and gone in a second! But I think it is good every now and then just to have a refresher course as to how quick they can be!

When we got back to camp we had a lovely lunch and a swim to cool off before our afternoon drive.

Ok here we go again.......so sad that some memories are starting to fade...

Friday 21 December Afternoon

Route for the afternoon: S82 - H4-2 - S137 - S28 - H4-2

Being back at camp so early, we decided on an afternoon drive.
It was a fairly quiet drive until we saw this fantastic creature hiding behind the bushes.

Image

Then only did we see the reason why………….

Image

While watching these 2 creatures I sent a message to heaven asking Him to keep her and her young safe.
We were about 1km before Duke's waterhole, contemplating whether we would have time to go there when an oncoming car stopped us. The guy told us that there was nothing at the waterhole but if we carry on to the S28 and drive about 3kms towards the S107 where we will find....

Image

Image

After sitting with then for quite some time we decided to go to Nthahdanyathi Hide.
Saw some biggies in the water….

Image

As we were coming out of the hide we saw an ellie coming straight for it!!! It was still some distance away so we couldn’t decide to rather get into the bakkie or wait it out inside the hide. Just as we went out the gate having decided on the bakkie and keeping a very close eye on the ellie a hippo decided to snort…….we basically jumped from the gate straight into the bakkie without touching the ground….

Image

We drove off as the ellie came past…After all that excitement we needed a quiet drive back to camp. Half way there we met up with a yellow ribbon who called himself “eenoog”. Not sure if there is someone like that here but they gave a wonderful sighting! About 500m after the bridge on the H10 there are 4 ******** being lazy.

Image

Image

Image

Just before we got to the cheetahs we saw this guy next to the road, but I very politely asked him to wait until we return from the sighting we he did.

Image

By now it was time to return to camp before the gate closes and we had to take this last pic of the beautiful sunset.
