Almost time for another trip to the Kalahari, the place of red sands and blue skies. A place of many Gems(bok).

Image

and those enchanting ruby red eyes

Tha Auob Riverbed was teeming with black shouldered kites last October

The alluring red sands

We leave for a 17 day trip on the 10 November

to the magical place.

A place where you can have Days Like This

27 November 2012

It is 6.20am and I am waiting in the car at the Twee Rivieren Gate. We have just had 17 wonderful days in the KTP. One would expect to see cheetah in 17 days but they eluded us this time. Duke returns with our permit and I must hand it to him that he can still surprise me after all these years as we head back into the Park and not to Upington.

Well, if it is cheetah you want let us go have one more look. We have a wonderful sighting at Leeudrill...........

but let me start at the beginning.

Introduction

The place of red sands and blue skies

Image

Not many Ruby Red Eyes this year.

Image

Five for the whole trip. Last year we were seeing 5 in one tree. We found cheetah scarce too, having seeing 11 in one day last year.

Not complaining as we did find many little gems though

Image

Image

Image

Image

And family jewels too

Image

If last year was the year of the BSK and cheetah this year goes down as the year of the Eland and the Lion.
There was a dead eland or three at every waterhole and the lions were feasting.

Image

Image

Image

We met many mites

Arks, Katja, AstroMatt, Hearick, DinkyBird, Hawk, RJM (who kept telling us about all his cheetah sightings  ), PeterPiper, katydownunder, francolin, Lion Queen, picnic and Magriet

and made some new friends :D

Buckle up here we go

Thank you anne-marie, RichardJ, Jo, Trrp-trrrrrrrr, Sky, barryels, hilda, Phillip1, GavinW, lion queen, wanderw  Glad to have you all on board :D

10 November 2012

We left Centurion at 5.00am, met up with lion queen and picnic in Upington :D and were at Twee Rivieren at 4.45pm.

We were soon on our way to Leeudrill, ready for the Kalahari magic. I was hoping to see eland on this trip as we had not seen one in KTP yet. We saw 5 dead ones at Samevloeiing

our first sighting was a Kori

Image

followed by the signature mammal and bird of the Kalahari (Gemsbok and PCG)

Image

Image

we then got an Eland and calf

Image

and the calf must have been born recently as you could still see the umbilical cord

Image

Image

Image

Image

We also found a pygmy falcon on the way back to camp :D

Thank you vinkie, granjan, Phillip1

11 November 2012

We were up at 4.30am or rather the driver was up at 4.30am, getting the ketlle boiling, preparing snacks and a tea flask, to enjoy at a sighting or a waterhole. Well trained he is

We decide to go to Rooiputs and back, then pack up and head for Auchterlonie for our meet with Arks. We were at Kieliekrankie for the next 3 nights.

At Leeudril our first lion of the trip

Image

Image

We then heard some noises from the ridge and saw the mating pair

Image

Further on we stopped for a PCG

Image

and noticed the two honey badgers with the attendant PCG's, in the distance, just too far for good pics

Image

on the way back another lioness drinking at Leeudril

Image

a jackal in a hurry

Image

We meet Katja at Samevloeiing and ask her to join us at Auchterlonie

We have a lovely meet with Arks (center) and Katja (right) and get tips on where to find all the gems :D

Thank you wanderw, Phillip1, anne-marie, hilda, Cape of Storms, Katja

It was great meeting you too Katja :D

We check in at Kieliekrankie and relax for a couple of hours. When we go out in the afternoon a storm is brewing which presents a great backdrop for dramatic colurs and landscapes. Enjoy the spledour of the Kalahari

On the afternoon drive we saw a lion at Houmoed

Image

A gemsbok was ambling along and suddenly he took off at speed. Then we saw the reason why :)

There were two lions in the background under the tree

Image

Image

Further along we were blocked by a hartebeest and calf on the road

Image

and then saw eland

Image

At Kij Kij we enjoyed this sight of secretary bird and vultures sharing the watehole

Cape Vulture

Secretary Bird

Thank you Pumbaa and wanderw

13 November 2012

As usual tea was waiting for me and I settled down to watch what would visit the waterhole this morning.
We had a herd of eland at the waterhole

Image

Then at 5.30 as we left Kieliekrankie a brown hyena on the move

Image

A pygmy falcon

Image

then meerkats

Image

Image

Image

Image

A pair of Greater Kestrels at Auchterlonie

Image

Image

A few more eland

Thank you Sky and Aristocat :)

We headed south for our afternoon drive and at Houmoed we found this sleeping lioness

Image

and her prize - an eland she killed

Image

and plenty of jackals hoping to get a free meal
but she was having none of their nonsense

Image

Image

Image

She dragged her eland closer to her in the shade where she was trying to sleep, with the jackals looking on

Image

Image

a little clean up before she settled down to sleep again

Image

but when the gemsbok came for a drink it got her attention and she made a half- hearted attempt

Image

Image

Then she settled down in the shade of a tree barely 3 metres from us

Thank you
anne-marie - thought she was being greedy :)

Fotomaljohan - welcome and hope you get to see the eland too. We are going to be there from Dec 22 as well so I hope we meet. Hope you don't have any accidents with the photos again :(

MM - borrow a brownie for a day :)

hilda - amazing to watch her pull the eland with just her teeth.

LQ- Glad you are back. That was one strong lady

14 November 2012

We were out again at 5.30am. Past Batulama we had this couple on the road

Image

and this guy in the riverbed

Image

They really do not look good the collars. The couple came very close and then sat down next to us

Image

and when the second male tried to join them he was sent packing. You could hear him moaning and complaining. Not a happy fellow at all

Image

Grumpy headed for the waterhole moaning all the way. The couple followed him.

We left them and stopped for a White-faced Scops Owl

Image

Image

We returned to join the lions. Grumpy stopped for a drink

Image

and we thought the couple would join Grumpy.............

Thank you Barryels

14 November 2012

The couple walked straight past Grumpy and

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

and Grumpy just had to watch them from the waterhole

Image

We returned to Kieliekrankie, packed up and made our way to Nossob where we would spend our next two nights.
I did say it was the year of the lions. At Rooikops there was a lion grooming himself

Image

while the females were eyeing some gemsbok

Image

but we thought it was 44 degrees and at midday in that heat they were not going to hunt anything. Therefore we left them and headed off to Nossob to check in.

We were sooooooo wrong........... :slap:

Thank you Elsa, wanderw, Phillip1, Lionspoon, anne-marie

We unpacked and relaxed in until it was cooler to go for a drive again. We headed south again and the lions had killed a wildebeest, in this heat

Image

Not much was happening so we moved on to Marie se Gat. Met Forumite, Hearick
here. There were some gemsbok

Image

Image

We returned to Rooikop. The male lion got up, sprayed and settled down near the carcass

Image

Image

Image

The ladies were interested in some kudu on the ridge

Image

Image

Image

They were spotted and the ladies returned, walking very close past our car

This was what I call a close encounter  At one stage we were surrounded by lionesses on all three sides and Duke was ready to roll those windows

In front to the left

Image

Behind to the left

Image

Then behind us this one took a liking to the Mitsubishi :k

TBC.......... :)

Clouds were forming and we enjoyed the beautiful Nossob Riverbed
