Grootkolk

Tea was waiting for me at 5.00 am. I was getting used to this treatment very quickly :D
While Duke was preparing everything for the drive, I settled down to watch who will visit the waterhole

We were not disappointed. First up

A Honey badger

Image

Followed by a Brownie

Image

Image

but the Brownie was very "disturbed." He kept looking around nervously and for good reason

Image

Image

Image

and Hello :o what is this

Image

What a wonderful start to the day

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Tag Daddy, you're it!

Image

Image

Image

Eventually Duke could finish packing the car and my tea was cold

We went on our drive and 6.3 km south of Grootkolk Duke said...................

Now that just does not sound right

Well actually Duke shouted out...Leopard!!!!

6.3km south of Grootkolk we saw the leopard we first came across in October last year and named Rosa
She is growing up into a beautiful lady and we were very happy to see her again

Image

Image

Image

After posing for us she moved off

Image

and then came onto the road and we followed her for about a kilometer

Image

Image

Before she crossed the road

Image

Posed for us again. rjm had joined us by this time

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

and then disappeared behind a fallen log

Image

Great to know Rosa is alive and doing well

Grootkolk delivers again

The delightful Rosa visited us at 5am.

Image

Image

Image

but was in a hurry to get away

Image

Image

We had another stunning sunrise

Image

Further on the drive south we saw a Honey Badger digging in the riverbed

Image

Image

On the way back to Grootkolk we met our neighbours and they told us there was a leopard 4km north of Grootkolk. It turned out to be Rosa and she was stalking something

Image

Image

Image

She climbed up a tree

Image

Image

To get a better view

Image

and she climbed down again

Image

and caught something which we thought was a jackal but she disappeared very quickly into the long grass

Back at camp we had lunch in the communal area with rjm, DinkyBird, Hawk, Franco (the camp attendant) and a couple from Germany.

19/20 November 2012

The 19th was a quiet day although we did see warthogs on the drive south

Image

On the 20th we left for Nossob and we found this Red-necked Falcon

Image

Image

Between Bedinkt and Kwang we came across these four lion cubs alongside the road

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

We left the cubs and carried on to Nossob to check in.
That afternoon we decided to go back and find the cubs again, hoping to find the mother had returned to the cubs.

On the way we had a show put on for us at Cubitje Quap

Thank You Timbits, wanderw, Div, anne-marie, Toddelelfe, Trrp-trrrrrrrr, MM, hilda, Sky, barryels  for your encouraging comments.

Three lionesses and a lion at Kwang

Image

The cubs were where we had left them and we learned from a fellow tourist that they belonged to the family at Kwang. Wonder why Mama had left such little cubs alone, 7km away, for so long :hmz:

On returning to Cubitje Quap the bateleurs were now in the waterhole

21 November 2012

We were out at 5.30am and decided we would make our way slowly to Dikbaardskolk, over the upper dune road and then head for Mata Mata, before going to Urikaruus where we were for the next four nights.
It was a great day, starting of with Brownies

First at Marie se gat

One at Kasper se Draai

Just after Kasper se Draai

A lioness on the road, and she walked right past us

Image

Image

Followed by the three lads, who also walked past us

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Quiet on the dune road and we could not get past 13 Borehole as a petrol tanker was stuck on the road
So we headed south, met rjm, who told us about the road block at Auchterlonie, this one due to a lion kill.

The year of the lions  but the day is only have done

Martial Eagles at Rooibrak

Image

It was a long morning and we eventually got to Urikaruus and had a well deserved break. That afternoon just as we were nearing Dalkeith waterhole Duke said, this is where we first met old bad mouth. So we were shocked  to see this

Image

Not bad mouth, and this guy did get up and give us a show

Image

Between Dalkeith and 14 Borehole, a beautiful wild cat

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

And a few surprises waited for us at Urikaruus...................

A lion and lioness came to drink every evening but not together

The ladies from the water tank also visited later in the evening

We were staying in Unit 4 at Urikaruus and kdu and francolin had written in the book about the leopard cubs 3 km south of camp (Thank you kdu  ).

So far we did not find them but we headed pass Urikaruus and 2.8km south of Uri in the tree was this beautiful cat who we now know is Tshidi

No words required  8)

And then Tshidi walked towards us. We held our breath

Image

and thought we were OK 8) so settled down about 3 meters from us  I would like to think we bonded with him. As good as it gets :D

It was 7.20pm and we had to get back to camp. We had just had the most magical hour with Tshidi.

Wonder where Seleka and Barolong were, but hey, tomorrow is another day
