Some birds

I´ll get back to that day because there were some more nice sightings but now I put here some pictures of birds, I´m not a birder and birds never caught much of my attention but that changed a little bit after going to the Kruger, I payed some more attention to these creatures and I enjoyed a lot watching them, I´m definitly going to try and see more birds in the future.

Of course that those I was able to see must be the most common ones but some of them are quite pretty.

In our first day the sky was cloudy so the light was lousy to take pictures, and since when you take pictures of birds you often have the sky behind them it´s not easy to get a good picture.

I start with a Grey go-away-bird, really beautiful

Image

And two Lilac breasted rollers, incredible colours

Image

Image

I thinlk this one is a Magpie shrike

Image

There are dozens of this Greater Blue-eared Starling in the restaurant deck at Lower Sabie

Image

The same applies to this Lesser Masked Weaver

Image

I loved the Red billed hornbill

Image

And also the Yellow billed hornbill, plenty of these at Afsaal, they have what we would call in Portuguese (making a direct translation) a "everybody owes him and nobody pays him" face :)

Image

Also spectacular their cousin, the Ground hornbill

Image

Image

This I think is a Woolly-necked Stork

Image

And now two that I wasn´t able to ID, I´m sure someboy will be able to help me here.

This one was pictured inside Berg en Dal camp

Image

And this one pictured with this Terrapin (it´s a terrapin, isn´t it?)

Hi pedro maia

I am really enjoying your TR!

The two bird's you need help in Id'ing are the Purple-crested Turaco (Lourie) - fantastic sighting, and a bird not often seen and photographed! - and the second bird is a Hamerkop.

Looking forward to your next instalment.

Raptors

I don´t have many pictures of raptors but they are incredible birds, I should have paid more attention to them while in the park.

I think I already said that I like Vultures

Image

This one I think it´s a Brown Snake Eagle, it was quite far so I had to zoom the picture

Image

And to me this seems to be a Tawny Eagle

Image

Bateleur, really beautifull, it was very difficult to get a clear picture as it was hidding among the branches, this was the best I could do

Image

And the amazing African Fish Eagle, absolutely majestuous

The King

Back to the H4-1, after having lunch at Lower Sabie we passed by Sunset Dam, took a few pictures and start our way back to Skukuza, at some momment there were some cars, we waited a bit until we got a good spot, and...

More lions

At first there were this lioness with another member of the family laying beside her

Image

And then, the King arrives, what a momment, to be so close of a male lion in the wild, that was really quite an emotion

Image

Next thing, even better, a cub comes to say hello to daddy

Image

Image

Image

Then another lioness with a collar showed up

Image

WOW

Image

Some family pictures

Image

Image

And an image I can´t forget

Just weird how we ID them and look at certain things, I have gotten so many birds wrong but am getting better by doinf the duckling challenge every now and then

Now I´ll have to go to the birds subforum to confirm those IDs :) .

Well, it seems that both of them are Tawny Eagles :) .

Cruising the H4-1

It was really a great day on the H4-1, it seems to be the busiest road in the Kruger but I didn´t find it so crowded as I expected and there were lots of animals of all kinds, besides the lions we had very good sightings of general game and truth is general game can be also pretty amazing, at least for European Urbanites such as we are :)

Impala, for instance, are sometimes underrated because they are so common, here sharing this water hole with some warthog

Image

Game drinking produces great images

Image

Same with Baboons, these were playing on the tar

Image

This one is no match for John Holmes

Image

Things turn more to families

Image

What a caring family

Image

Image

Then we had this little fellow, once again we couldn´t have a clear picture, anyone knows what kind of Mongoose is this one?

Image

One of the best sightings of the day, Nyala, how gorgeous can they be?

Image

Image

A Buffalo staring at us, my wife was really unconfortable with these guys :)

Image

Some Girafes, always beautiful

Image

Image

Image

Image

And a couple of Warthogs

Still a few last pictures of that great day:

One sleepy Hyena

Image

Some more lions, they were not close but anyway it was our fourth lions sighting of the day

Image

Image

Seemed to be young lions, let´s zoom the picture in

Image

This great day is coming to an end, one last sighting of an Ellie when the sun starts to go down

Image

And this wonderful colours on the way back to Skukuza

Road Blocks

Animals crossing the road are always nice sightings

Like this Impala

Or this huge Ellie, I already mentioned this guy on this TR

Girafe

Image

Kudu

Image

Wildebeast

Image

Baboon

Image

Image

More Girafe

Image

This one was a highlight, this Girafe bull coming in our direction, Girafes are supposed to be pacific animals but when one of this size passes right by you can´t help thinking that he he gets nervous and starts kicking we may have a problem

Image

This picture gives an idea on how close he was from our car, we could heve touched him

Image

Image

And a video of this momment (the sun was right behind him)

And some more Kudu

Transport Dam

In our last morning in the park we started to go to Transport Dam and it was great, we stayed there for quite a while watching the animals came and go, there were only a couple more cars so it was very quiet the place, we really enjoyed those momments.

There were Impala, then Waterbuck, Zebra and also a lizzard, I guess it should be a monitor but he was on top of a rock, catching some sun, so we couldn´t see him from a better angle.

All Good Things Come to an End

Unfortunately we couldn´t stay longer in the Park, we had a to catch a plane in Nelspruit going to Joburg an then back to Europe, we still had 1 day in Joburg and 2 in Paris before returning home, those were also great days but I must say that if I knew that we all were going to enjoy the Kruger as much as we did we would have spent also those days there.

But we still had some good sightings before leaving the Park.

Close to Transport Dam there was quite a big burned area, I guess that it was intentionally burned, that was not a surprise because we had seen the same in Banff National Park, in the Canadian Rockies, the surprise was to find that there was quite a good amount of game wandering around those burned areas, we found it strange because it doesn´t seem to be much to eat there.

Some last kudu females

Image

And some ellies, always a big pleasure to see them

Image

This one was quite big

Image

Image

And he gave us this look

Image

And this very lazy Hyena, we went to Transport Dam because here at the forum I was told that there was one hyena den and it proved to be a great tip

Image

Image

Our last sighting in the Park was quite a compensation for hte NLIT, these two fellows right by the road, all to ourselves, it´s hard to believe that these lovely creatures are in such big danger in an area where they are supposed to be protected, hopefully these two don´t seem to be aware of that danger

Image

Image

Image

And that´s it, I think it´s clear how much I liked to visit the Kruger, and I´ll keep visiting the forum and my daughter will keep following the Kruger Sightings web.

Making this TR was a great way to relive our vacation and I have to thank all of you who made this virtual trip with me, I hope you enjoyed the ride  .

I will definitely return to these roads...
