My wife and I have been regular visitors to South Africa over the last few years, atleast once every year but to be honest we had not seen much of the country or the parks apart from Kruger. Every trip had been only to the Kruger, landing at OR Tambo and driving straight out to Kruger and back to the airport. This time around we decided to give another park a chance, mostly influenced by all the rave reviews about the Kgalagadi on this forum. Anyways, we managed to book most camps in the Kagalagadi a year in advance and finally after a long year of waiting to go on this much awaited trip we finally boarded the flight out of Manchester, UK on the 17th of April. We would be spending 16 amazing nights in Kgalagadi and then move on to Madikwe for 5 nights before flying back home.
After a long overnight flight we arrived at JNB on the morning of the 18th and were soon on our way to the KTP. Immigration, baggage done smoothly, picked up the hire car and set off about 11.30 am. Our first stop would be at Kathu for the night and then the next morning we travelled to the park via Upingtion, just stopping for supplies. Think it was the bank holiday weekend so the roads were extremely quiet, and the roads being in very good condition meant that we made the journey rather quickly and comfortably.

DAY1
We arrived at Twee Rivieren on the 19th at about 4pm which meant we wouldn't have much time that evening for game drive. But, we still managed to do a small drive upto Samevloeing to watch the sun go down over the magical Kalahari landscape.

It was relatively quiet all the way upto Samevloeing apart from a few Springboks in the distance and an eagle perched on a dead tree way too far to photograph. As we approached the waterhole, we spotted a Kori Bustard in excellent light out in the open.

It was great to spot this bird out in the open for once, on most other occasions in other parks they always seem to be in grassy areas and move off as soon as they are approached. This guy was rather relaxed and hung around for a while, even moving closer to our car.

A small group of gemsbok appeared over the dunes and walked across the open plain towards the road.

Image

This was our first sighting of the Kalahari Gemsbok and it was rather delightful to see a calf and mother.

Image

They crossed to road and walked past the waterhole without stopping for a drink. I was hoping to get some shots of them drinking, but no luck with that. Maybe they just didn't fancy a drink or they were shy of all the vehicles parked at the waterhole waiting for something to showup.

Image

The gemsbok carried on walking out into the dunes as the sun set in the background. Soon it was time to head back and we reached camp in darkness. We were quiet surprised to see quickly the sun drops and it gets dark in the winter.
Back at the camp for the first brai of many under the stunning Kalahari night sky.

The clearest skies with a billion stars........that's the magic of the Kalahari

thanks all for the kind comments. Please feel free to critique my pictures, good or bad all comments are very much appreciated.
Personally I am a bit disappointed with the night sky image, there was just too much light entering the image from the bottom right. That is the Twee Rivieren camp site in the background. Ill post some more images later tonight, hope you guys enjoy them.

cheers

Star trail shot at Twee Rivieren on the first night.

The previous night sky image was shot as a part of this sequence, not sure which one works better.........
What do you guys think?
