We arrived back safely yesterday afternoon after 8 nights in KTP. I have already checked our December '12 booking and am going to make some adjustments. Less Nossob and more TR/Mata Mata. The last TR of December '11 took 3 months to complete, has 12308 hits to date and a total of 449 comments. Thank you for your views and your comments. This one has to go a bit faster  . To that end I have decided to put in minimum narration and a few photos of each day. Should you want to explore some of the sightings more on a day, then ask and I will upload more, that is to say if there are any more to show :D

So after 10.5 hours on the road we reached TR reception. Here we delivers 2 parcels of boys clothes for the local clothing drive. Permit in hand we headed for our bungalow 22, the one we asked for without bats :D. We unpacked quickly and headed for the gate. We decided to head north on the Nossob road and before long found a few cars parked up at a very nice sighting. There was a family of mom and 3 cubs playing hide and seek with us behind a bush. These are the best of the bunch.

Back at the bungalow we made a fire and braai'ed a wheel of sausage while being eaten alive by the local mozzies. They departed after generous amounts of Peaceful Sleep was applied. We hit the sack early, but as soon as the lights went out the familiar sounds of bat wings filled the air. AAAARGH! it was going to be a loooong night but at least we were to wake in the KTP with 8 days of sightings ahead of us.

I was awake at 04:00, listening to the bats and decided to do a bit of surfing and photo editing. The hour eventually came when we could depart and pick up our permit. First out the gate and onto the TR/Nossob road as far as the Leeudril 4x4 turnoff as we had decided to do the 4x4 route. It was relatively quite until we reached Samevloeing where 3 ducks caught my attention. Here we have 3 Fulvous ducks, clearly not locals.

Image

While shooting the familiar but out of place ducks, a sound carried over the water. A Go-away bird squawking away in a thorn bush. We found it and took a shot for the record. Great start.

We continued north and just before the Leeudril 4x4 turnoff on the calcrete ridge....

Image

A Leopard sat watching us for a while and then made her way down the ridge, walked over to a tree where she scent marked it with perfume for her many suitors.

Image

Image

Image

She walked right up to the car and stood there looking at us for a few seconds, then walked aroun dthe front and scent marked a tree on the right before lying down for more photos.

Image

Image

Image

A second and third vehicle arrived and she got up and slowly walked away throughout he grass into the upcoming sun. We were ecstatic...........

Thank you all. It was indeed a humbling experience to be so close to an animal everyone so keenly seeks.

We turned off onto the Leeudril 4x4 route and enjoyed the single track driving. The few steep inclines to get over the dune proved to be a sandy, rutted and bumpy, but I could continue over them at a slow speed. Viva Landy Viva! :D

We saw some Gemsbok, a few lone Wildebeest and when we got to Gemsbok waterhole a Juvenile Gabar Goshawk entertained us and tested our bird in flight skills. We managed a few lucky shots.

Further along we saw evidence of the predators in the area, maybe the Leopardesses work.

We exited the 4x4 route just north of Houmoed and continued on towards Mata Mata. In the calcrete rock face I spotted a Barnowl nest. Look out for the owls in the mini caves.

After a short stop at Kamqua we carried on, but not far as just opposite the Kamqua waterhole on the ridge on the left we saw 2 Hyenas under a tree. It was obviously nice and cool in the shade. I switched off and watched the Hyenas. Eventually one got up and walked away and out of sight. The other one also got up and came walking down the ridge towards us, stopped and crouched down so only her backside was visible. When she reappeared she had a little pup in her jaws.

Image
CO9E1850.jpg by cooper5022, on Flickr

She carried the pup up the hill and into the shade of the tree where she lay down again and allowed th pup to play around. The pup then made its way back down the hill and disappeared into the den. A very nice sighting and certainly a first for us.

Along the way north there were large herds of Springbok.

Image
_MG_0033.jpg by cooper5022, on Flickr

At one of the waterholes this Cape Crow was making a real racket, probably shouting and asking "who opened the oven door?" :D

Image
CO9E1890.jpg by cooper5022, on Flickr

These two Ostriches "merged" into one while taking a dust bath.

Image
CO9E1929.jpg by cooper5022, on Flickr

Two other birds along the way was a Sociable Weaver and a Juvenile Pale Chanting Goshawk.

Image
CO9E1937.jpg by cooper5022, on Flickr

Image
CO9E1961.jpg by cooper5022, on Flickr

And finally before we reached Mata Mata, a couple of dueling Hartebeest.

Image
CO9E1976.jpg by cooper5022, on Flickr

We really had fun today and after a steak braai were looking forward to a solids night sleep in the riverside bungalow......tbc

There we go, page turn = new episode

At around 03:00 I awoke with the sound of a lions roar. In a millisecond, spotlight in the one hand we burst out onto the stoep. In the spotlight we saw one male and 3 lionesses drinking water. The one lionesses was less than friendly with on of the other females and mock charged her while letting rip a huge growl. They wondered off out of sight and left us wide awake . Back to bed.

After a few more hours of sleep, we had coffee and rusks, packed up and headed for the gate. After we received our permit we headed south. A beautiful sunrise was developing in the east.

Image
CO9E2023.jpg by cooper5022, on Flickr

Image
CO9E2021.jpg by cooper5022, on Flickr

We continued south until we got close to Carig Lockhart where we saw 2 Cheetahs just leaving the waterhole :( . We missed the drink by a few minutes.

Image
CO9E2027.jpg by cooper5022, on Flickr

We sat at the waterhole for a while hoping to see them again, but when they didn't show we left. In Veertiende Boorgat loop a Bateleur on the ground collecting grass caught our attention. After it collected a mouthful of grass it flew up onto a perch where it was buzzed by a Juvenile Gabar Goshawk.

Image
CO9E2054.jpg by cooper5022, on Flickr

Image
CO9E2068.jpg by cooper5022, on Flickr

Another bird in the Veertiende was this one. ID required please experts.

Image
CO9E2076.jpg by cooper5022, on Flickr

While sitting with this bird, I noticed the Monarch Butterfly on the yellow grass.

Image
CO9E2077.jpg by cooper5022, on Flickr

Just out of Veertiend a Black Chested Snake Eagle swooped down behind a bush onto some poor unsuspecting piece of breakfast.

Image

Onto Dertiende..........

Thank you kindly fellow travelers.

We stopped at the waterhole at Dertiende, one of my favorites, and watched the comings and going of the birds and mammals. The light was starting to go as bank of clouds started to move in. It started to look more like London than the Kalahari. A Brown Snake Eagle landed in the top branches of the tree on the left.

Image
CO9E2111.jpg by cooper5022, on Flickr

A Giraffe cautiously approached and eventually started to drink from the litter water hole. We could see the water level drop. being so close we could hear the water being sucked down :D.

Image
CO9E2115.jpg by cooper5022, on Flickr

Every now and then when it lifted its head which would result in a spurt of water exiting its mouth.

Image
_MG_0074.jpg by cooper5022, on Flickr

Photographing a Giraffe up close is a challenge with a 500mm lens. :D

Image
_MG_0089.jpg by cooper5022, on Flickr

Next up a BBJ came trotting in from across the riverbed and had a quick drink before departing again.

Image
CO9E2161.jpg by cooper5022, on Flickr

The Monarch Butterflies kept on presenting nice photo opportunities.

Image
CO9E2124.jpg by cooper5022, on Flickr

We headed off again for lunch and a nap at Urikaruus. On the way this Black Shouldered Kite.

Image
CO9E2176.jpg by cooper5022, on Flickr

and a couple of Gemsbok in a half hearted duel....no pics.

Arriving at Urikaruus felt like arriving back home. We were a bit early to move into number 2 although it was noon already, so we sat on the stoep and relaxed. We eventually got the go-ahead and unpacked....tbc.

Hi again. Sorry for the tardiness, but we had a crises at work. Here we go with the next installment.

After a quick brunch of eggs, bacon, sausage and bread and well earned nap, we headed North. In Dertiende we came across a few Wildebeest who where obviously very excited in what the smelled :D

Image

Further along we saw a small creche of Hartebeest.

Image
CO9E2211.jpg by cooper5022, on Flickr

The light was deteriorating fast and by the time we made it to Craig Lockhart it was very grey and dull. There were no less than 5 Pale Tawneys in the dead tree and all but 1 stuck around for a photo session.

Image
CO9E2218.jpg by cooper5022, on Flickr

Another first for me was this Cinnamon Breasted Bunting.

Image
CO9E2236.jpg by cooper5022, on Flickr

Here is a landscape shot of the view from the Craig Lockhart parking area.

Image
_MG_0117.jpg by cooper5022, on Flickr

We headed home and found a pair of Slender Mongoose near the old Hyena den close to Urikaruus.

....and then it rained. It started during the night and when we woke up the ground was being soaked and the sky was grey. We collected out permit and headed North in expectation.

Everything was wet, I mean soaking wet.

Image

I need an id on the bird above please.

During the very brief periods when the rain stopped, the animals were trying to dry out.

Image

Image

All the way up to Craig Lockhart and the going was difficult in terms of sighting. Where ever possible I tried to avoid the puddles in the road as the animals value the water much more than my tires.

We headed back to Urikaruus for lunch but hit a roadblock just before the urikaruus hill :D. The local family of hyenas were enjoying the rain. There 2 youngsters and 3 adults. The youngsters would pull out a piece of scrub or pick up a twig and the adults would try and take it from them. One of the adults was very inquisitive and even stood up against a car and peered into the back seat :D .

Arriving at Urikaruus, the waterhole was deserted and the train still fell steadily. We couldn't sit on the stoop, so we through together something hot, and had a nice rest. These 5 o'clock wake ups and sleep interrupted nights are what KTP is about and an afternoon power nap is great to recharge this spotting eyes.

The afternoon session started with a drive down to Kamqua. It was still raining.

Image

The Wildebeest were acting wacko and running around in circles and diving head first into a muddy patch.

Image

The Kamqua Hyena baby was nowhere to be seen, but one of the adults showed itself and walked off out of sight.

Image

Back on the road towards Mata Mata, this Bee-eater.

Image

Another very wet Tawney.

Image

Another Bee-eater.

Image

a Black-chested Prinia.

Image

Green-winged Pytilia.

Image

White-browed Sparrow weaver.

Image

Another less wet Tawney against a grey old sky. We were starting to feel as grey as the sky.

Image

....tbc

The afternoon trip delivered a few more sightings.

Another crazy Wildebeest.

Image

A couple of Giraffes in Dertiende loop.

Image

One of many Bat-eared focus seen after the rain.

Image

Image

And so ended a very hard day of finding something exciting. That night we another huge storm. Just when we thought it couldn't rain any harder the rain increased. I thought we were going to be washed away. ...tbc

Today we were heading off to Nossob for 3 nights, but first we headed south all the way to Gemsbokplein. As we ere staying at Urikaruus, to road was deserted and we could follow various cat tracks in the wet sand, all leading to nothing. There was a lot of water about and which we skirted as much as was possible, but the mud was building up the Landy. :D. The sky was still overcast and it looked like more rain was on the way. The only thing we saw was a Lanner Falcon in a tree.

Image

The upper dune road was was wet and muddy. with occasional bird sightings.

Northern Korhaan.

Image

Our first sighting of a Red-necked Falcon.

Image

Greater Kestrel.

Image

Red-eye Bulbul

Image

We stopped at the enlarged Dikbaardskolk picnic spot. San Parks have done a nice job here with the ablution facilities and picnic area.....next stop Nossob.

Apologies fr the slow posting, but issues at work and a new toy in the form of an iPad has taken up my time.

We checked in at Nossob in 10A, not mt favorite bungalows as they are too far away from the action :D . After lunch we headed north but not before consulting the sightings board. The board showed lion activity a long way north and was really empty of any magnets :hmz: .

We drove north past Cubitje Quap and all the way up to Langklaas, where apparently a pride of lions was lying next to the road. We found the spot where they had lay, but the sun had burned them out and they had left. We took a vow not to chase sleeping lions again :rtm:

We drove back to Cubitje Quap and had some fun with the birds while we waited for the mammals.

Namaqua Dove.

Image

Image

Pin-Tailed Whyda.

Image

Grey-headed Shrike

Image

With time and light running out we headed back to Nossob. We stopped next to a old dead tree where a Black shouldered kite was sitting and scanning the ground below. It took off on a failed hunt and returned. When it did we "shot" the feathers off it :D

Image

Image

Although a very slow and disappointing day, these images made up for it. Persistance

tbc......

Let me start by apologizing for the long absence, but work issues took priority. We started our second full day from Nossob in high spirits and with great expectation. A trip North produced nothing of real reporting value, but a Gabar Goshawk.

Image

We saw lots of spoor but the owners had long since vanished. We sat at Polentswa and waited....and waited...and waited. Eventually hunger and boredom got the better of us and we headed back to Nossob. The Salticracks were finished by the time we reached Nossob.
After lunch we decided to go South and into Marie se Draai. We were entertained by a pair of Black-Chested Prinias.

Image

Image

a Scaley-feathered Finch provided brief diversion.

Image

a Capped Wheatear behaved when we asked and sat quite close to the road in a gorgeous light.

Image

We headed North again and stopped at Cubitje Quap where a juvenile Gabar Goshawk was causing havoc amongst the small birds.

Image

There were a number of tailless Shaft-tailed Whydahs around chasing the males with tails. We were wondering how the loose their tails feathers.

Image

While were sat there in the silence we decided to check at reception if we could cancel our next night at Nossob and move down to TR for another night. Lets try our luck.

Two more birdies were the Red-headed Finch and a Purple Roller.

Image

Image

We got our wish to change camps, so we would be heading south tomorrow......tbc

I have to thank you all for the great comments. We left a quiet Nossob and headed south through Marie se Draai which proved very quiet. At last we saw a few cars in the distance. Our hopes soared and faith restored in the KTP.

A pair of lions greeted us, lying right next to the road.

Image

Image

Image

Image

The pair eventually crossed the road and strolled through the grass into the shade of a nearby tree.

Further on, a PCG drew our attention as it sat on an interesting tree stump from which it launched its attacks on the unsuspecting critters.

Image

Image

It wasn't alone as a Slender Mongoose was brave enough to climb the stump for a better vantage point.

Image

the day was looking up......tbc

Apologies...I messed up and deleted all these images from Flickr by mistake. I will rebuild the trip report over the next few days.

After the PCG had departed we continued south and came upon this Bateleur. It wasn't ideally placed in terms of the light, but we shot away anyway.

Image

The old road between Nossob and TR is shocking and we shook and rattled like never before. Somewhere along the road we spotted a juvenile PCG who flew down into the grass. No sooner had it landed when an adult took off on the far side and mock attacked the youngster.
