A bit further on more joy, a group of three rhinos, now as you can see the tourists on the organised drives were starting to arrive.

Another wild dog pack, six this time. Over the moon with excitement now.

Well I have to say something here, would be interested in your opinions..... as you can see four external safari operators in jeeps had come over the hill and sighted the dogs, now I can tell you two of those vehicles just kept on going. :wall: :wall:
The third slowed down enough to give his customers a brief look then took off, and only one of the jeeps stayed with the sighting. We were shocked and amazed, were they only interested in finding the Big 5 ?, were they just in a hurry to see as much as they can in one day?, I don’t know but it certainly assured us that we were doing this the right way, we spent ages with this pack.

There is more to this story, the dogs turned on to the Shithave Dam track so we turned with them, keeping well back and very slowly following them down to the dam.

Still could not believe what we were doing, us and only one other vehicledriving behind a pack of wild dogs down to the dam...so thrilling. :) :)

At the end of the track there was a couple sitting in their car, quietly drinking their morning coffee while overlooking the water, completely unaware that a wild dog pack had surrounded them, followed by us and a couple more vehicles by now.

Finally the gentleman turned around and the look on his face .....priceless

Thank you Pumbaa

The pack then ran together around the top embankment of the dam where there was a waterbuck, oh no..   our hearts started thumping at the thought of what might happen next.

Well unfortunately we will never know, the waterbuck took off and although the dogs started to follow, they were soon all out of sight behind the bushes.

So we do not know if the buck lived to fight another day or not, however although I have experienced the thrill of a kill, not really sure if I would have like to have seen this handsome boy bought down. :(

on the scent

After all that excitement we finally made it to Pretoriuskop, by this time tummies were rumbling like crazy so we decided to try a hot breakfast there. Could do with a change from cornflakes.

Fresh brewed coffee, bacon and eggs in a lovely setting, yum yum and we were soon rejuvenated and off again.

The road was quiet on the return so we decided to check out Transport dam, and found a large herd of waterbuck grazing. We had been sitting for some time before we realised that everyone else had their vehicles facing the bucks rather than the water, and were using binos. We pulled up close to investigate and the man in the next car asked if we had seen the leopard in the bushes ...what, not again!! Well we looked and looked and could see some spots in amongst the bushes and the bucks were skittish and keeping an eye on those bushes too. We sat for a very long time in the hope of some action but it was not to be.
More cars arrived and waited but now word had got around [funny about that], there was a pair of mating lions on the S114. We and a few others decided this might be more interesting than spots in a distant bush so off we went in a convoy. But it was not to be, cars were searching but it seemed we were a bit late for the kitties, missed again, did see more eles though.

We didn’t care, we were still high from the sightings that morning so headed back to camp for a rest.

Some very nervous Waterbuck

After a rest at camp we decided on advice from other forumites to go and see Lake Panic, we had never had time to get there before. We found it very beautiful, and quite a few birds came and went while we sat enjoying the serenity.

I felt a bit like we had walked into a real life Diorama.

We decided the next morning that before we headed for Satara we would go for another drive along the H1-1 which had been so productive yesterday.

Nothing happening at Transport dam this morning but we were surprised when a hyena pack came heading along the road and into the bushes, they seemed to be on the trail of something that smelt good.

So as I said leaving Skukuza today, so first here is a bit of an extract from our review on the camp for anyone who has not been.

Although a lot of visitors to Skukuza report the camp as too busy and noisy, we may have been lucky or maybe it was just our location but we didn’t hear a thing apart from the hippos. Of course we didn’t spend a lot of time in the camp as we were out the gate at 6am and on most days didn’t return until 6pm. We had a Semi Luxury Riverside Bungalow, which had wonderful views up and down the river. We saw hippo’s, buff and ellies from our the seat near our verandah.

The abundance of wildlife in the area is outstanding, and we found the bungalow more than adequate, clean, air-conditioned, and a quiet location with only sounds of the bush at night. The only negative would be a few minor maintenance issues that did not impact our stay at all. We didn’t eat in any camp restaurants as we were just too tired at night to sit down long enough for a restaurant meal

In fact we broke our all time record for an early night into bed.

We found service at reception, cafeteria, shop, petrol station, etc was very friendly and helpful.

On to satara :D

We decided to go back to the day visitors area at Skuks to have a bit of breakfast before starting the drive through to Satara. We were quite impressed by the nice facilities here, especially the pool area. At this time of day of course there were no people around so it was very quiet.

So back on the road and all of a sudden SO hit the brakes...whoah what was that, reversed back, we had just passed something in the grass, something that was a very strange shape.
The strange shape turned out to be a mother and baby....just check out this little cutie crawling all over his mum while she was unsuccessfully trying to have a nap. :D

We stayed some time watching the rhino mum and bub and actually realised after a while that there was a father in the grass not too far away. We had been so enchanted by the little one that we did not even realise it was a whole family. The funny thing also is that we sat there for a long time just waiting to see the mother get up and move. The way the calf was laying on top of her mum concealed her head, and we just wanted to be sure that she was ok, what a shame that tha poaching causes us to worry like that.

Almost forgot we also saw a baboon family this morning that had a cute newborn baby that could barely walk, and was getting hassled by his cousins.
