The next day we started with another quick trip around the Capricorn loop but it was a little quieter this morning, the grass was pretty long and we could really only see the larger animals in some parts.
Of course the ostrich were there and some more kori bustard

From here we headed further north than we had ever been and drove the Red Rocks loop.

Getting pretty hungry we eventually found a nice lookout spot where we were allowed to get out and have breakfast.
Note to self....... remember next time not quite so many places to stop up here. :P

Really liked this area, along the loop we saw buffalo, crocs and turtles, waterhogs, kudu and some very nice birdies.

These two looked like a couple of mates :)

Once we were back on the main road we decided to head to Shingwedzi for lunch, what another lovely spot. Quiet and nicely treed, had lunch in the restaurant watching buffalo and waterbuck in the nearby river.

Wow I just do not know how we are ever going to pick where to stay in the future. :hmz: :hmz: We have now visited most of the camps either staying there or for a meal, and love them all :D :D :D

Then we saw a turn off to Kaniedood Dam, this name was knocking around somewhere in my brain with all the other names of places I had read about so off we went.
Again it was well worthwhile, firstly foound a couple of cars staring into the bush, [I should say the people in the cars  ]. We sat and stared too but after a couple of minutes of blankly gazing into the bush we gave in and had to ask, the answer...a lion under that tree. :o :o

Yes there he was, the only visible part was his magnificent head, well at least he was facing our way. And any lion is a good lion right.
The others soon left but we hung around, yes we were doing it again. Sitting hoping for some movement, but it was not to be. After about half an hour we headed off, taking note of exactly where he was for the return journey

Soon we came to the dam and driving into one the car parks there was a big herd of elephant straight across the river. How wonderful, we sat and watched for ages while they drank and romped around in the reeds.

Check out the cheeky teenagers in the back

Next a beautiful fish eagle posed for us a mere couple of meters from the car, wow

Far from great, but the first time I have captured a bird in flight that was not just a blur :wall: :wall:

Image
kruger12 50d 1 152 by thesandmans2012, on Flickr

By the way the lion was still there on our return, just lying flat out now so no more piccys.

It was getting late by now and we had a long way back to Mopani, after all you never know what hold ups you might encounter on the way back right.........

Roadblock number one

This was a real worry, the road was very narrow and he just dawdled around in front of the car. It seemed like forever and there was no way past until he was right into the bushes.

Image
kruger12 50d 1 161 by thesandmans2012, on Flickr

Roadblock number two

Yes the white vehicle was not going to make any attempt to pass, he actually turned around and went back
Image
kruger12 50d 1 164 by thesandmans2012, on Flickr

I only wanted to get to my favorite grass
Image
kruger12 50d 1 179 by thesandmans2012, on Flickr

Roadblock number three

This was the big one
You can see how far down the sun was, we had to very carefully drive through in the end

Image
kruger12 50d 1 182 by thesandmans2012, on Flickr

Roadblock number four

And just when we thought we had made it back to camp on time, this one was an absolute whopper, and he actually pushed us way back up the hill.

As you can see the camp was in our line of sight, so close and yet so far

We finally rolled in with minutes to spare and a line of cars behind us.

More naughty northern ellies.

Your bird is definitely a Bee Eater (White Fronted)

Forgot to say the other bird IDs from the previous post were
1.Arrow Marked Babbler (I think!!)
2.Red Winged Starling.

So today will be our last full day in Kruger before heading into Timbavati. :( :(

Bittersweet because we did not want to leave but at the same time hoping to see some exciting things over the next week. :) :(

Of course we had to have a final drive around the Capricorn loop.

First up
Image
kruger12 50d 1 189 by thesandmans2012, on Flickr

Now help needed please

Stopping at the waterhole we were watching the usual zebbies when I noticed in the distance what looked like quite large antelopes. I am really thinking / hoping they were eland.

Can anyone help here....maybe if someone can confirm id from these rather grainy photos that would be great.

Sorry to ask this with a bad photo, although they were not that far away I just could not get a clear picture.

A lone roadblock but still not one we would mess with.

Back along the main road heading back to camp for breakfast we came across this huge herd of elephants. We sat here for probably an hour watching them sucking the waterhole dry then crossing the road in their little groups. :D :D

By time we got back to our room and got our suitcases packed ready to leave tomorrow :( it was lunch time, so we decided to stay in and spend the last couple of hours at Mopani loafing around on the deck.

Of course as it got later and being our last night the temptation was too strong and we just had to have one last little drive. It was just a short one but very enjoyable, we went to Mooiplaas for sundowners and were lucky to be joined once again by some elephants who were having a few sundowners of their own.

Missed a bit

Our final morning and we felt sad and excited at the same.

We made it to the Phalaborwa Gate in plenty of time, our only sighting along the way was a little hyena on the side of the road, how appropriate that hyenas were our first and last sightings for the two weeks.

These two were arguing about a bit of spine, eventually the hyena won and the leppie sooked out and went up the tree
