sable Magic Mountain Zebra January 2012

Unread postby sable » Tue Jan 17, 2012 10:19 pm

12th September
We arrive at Mountain Zebra National Park in the afternoon.
A very friendly gate guard informs us about where to stay and which activities are available.
He hands out a very informative visitor map of the park.
Right behind the gate there are the first mountain zebras to welcome us. :)
They are accompanied by some springboks.

At the camp reception there is again a lot more useful information for us.
We reserve for dinner, get the key for chalet #10, unpack quickly and hurry to start our afternoon drive.
Today we want to see Rooiplaat Loop again.

The first animal we see as we arrive at the high plateau is this male ostrich.
Mr. Ostrich walks along in deep grass.

Image

Close to the bushes there are kudus. We really see a lot kudus during our holidays.

Image

A red hartebeest rests close to the road.

Image

We see our first blesbok in the park ...

Image

... and more zebras together with springboks.

Image

What a wonderful landscape :)

Image

This is my first visit to Rooiplat Loop without thunder and lightning.
During former visits I always experienced a change of weather.
After half of the loop I often had heavy rain and nearly got stuck in a muddy road.
Today I have a very relaxing stay at the high plateau, excellent prepared gravel road
and no rain at all. :)

What welcome greeting is this?

We enjoy more landscape with black wildebeests ...

... and far away elands.

Do these mountain zebras really find feed in this area with such a deep dry grass?

A lonely black wildebeest rests at a waterhole.

Others enjoy the green grass in company wih springboks.

Unfortunately it is time to leave for the camp.

Image

I am a bit complaining that this time the mountain zebras have not been so close as during our last visit.
They are a bit shy and always try to get a good distance.

Close to the camp ...

The red hartebeest has finished it's rest and walks across the road.

This is the view into the valley with the camp.

Suddenly I get my mountain zebras close enough.

Aren't they beautiful?

Thank you all for your kind comments.

yes, it was a bit cloudy when we visited Rooiplaat Loop, but for us it was very good weather.
During former visits in the South African autumn we had sunshine when we arrived at the plateau,
but after half of the loop we experienced heavy thundershowers.
The weather can change very fast.

This afternoon we had a wonderful relaxing visit to the plateau with it's great landscape and wonderful animals.

At the camp

Unread postby sable » Sat Jan 21, 2012 8:05 pm

Back at the camp we take a shower. I am the first one in the bathroom.
It is not easy to keep the bathroom dry as this is a chalet for disabled
and this means the curtain of the shower ends half way to the ground.
I give up to keep the bathroom dry and after SO takes his shower you can swim to the toilet.
The bathroom is totally under water.
This curtain seems not to be a good solution.
So this evening we will brush our teeth at the sink in the kitchen.

We are almost alone for dinner in the restaurant this evening.
A friendly waitress serves us some very delicious burgers.
Thumbs up for the restaurant.

Boorgatspook, Mokala is still on my wish list.
Without question those smaller parks are worth a visit.

After this delicious dinner I felt I had a wonderful time at Mountain Zebra National Park
and did not expect anything special to come. The next day we had to leave the park in the morning.
Little did I know there was a very special moment waiting for us.

13th September

The night is a bit chilly, there are only 8 degrees Celcius this morning.
After warming up with a delicious breakfast with tea and coffee we check out and leave the camp at 8 o'clock.
We come along red hartebeests and see these fellows warming up in the sunshine in the upper tree.

vervet monkeys

I'm looking at the map of the park and try to estimate when we will have to turn left for Ubejane Loop
as I hear SO say "Hey, there is ....."

What a magical moment! I see this wonderful cat coming right towards us.

Image

A collared cheetah walks in my direction.

Image

It crosses the road right in front of our car ...

Image

... and walks uphill at the other side of the road.

Thank you all for your kind comments.

It was a big surprise to see the cheetah shortly before the turn to Ubejane Loop.
I did not expect to see a cheetah walking across the main road between the camp and the gate.
This was as Pumbaa said the cream on top! :D

I read in one of the brochures "Cheetah have been re-introduced into the Park in 2007 ...",
but I didn't expect that I was about to see one of them during this short visit.
There are walks with the ranger where you can go out into the park and see cheetahs,
but this is one of my "next time" activities.

These spots really were of the category "Expect the unexpected!"

Image

Is it a male or a female cheetah?

As we turn left into Ubejane Loop we see this kudu with wonderful horns.

Image

Our first gemsboks during our this year's visit appear ...

Image

Image

Image

... and springboks jump in the morning sun.

Image

Image

The red hartebeest says "Good bye" to us and we arrive at the gate again.

Image

Very happy about the wonderful start into this day we tell the friendly gate guard
"We saw a cheetah close to Ubejane Loop this morning!"
Before we leave I have to see the restroom.
Later this turns out to be a very good decision, our way to Addo is full with road works
which cause a lot of delays.
I take this picture of the new park gate of Mountain Zebra National Park ...

Image

now we are heading to Addo.
