A long long time ago ...

Uncle Fanie suddenly looked serious and piped up in a slow Afriakaans way:
Ja ou James ... You like the Kruger don't you?"
I had to quickly swallow my Ouma (granny's) cookie she baked and answered enthusiastically:
"Ja Oom I love it!"
So glad the topic had changed to Kruger :D

"You know we have a place by the Kruger?" He casually stated
"You should come" He added

I almost spat out my coffee I was so excited! Turns out myu Uncle is inviting me to his place In Marloth Park! On the South side of the Crocodile river between Berg En Dal and Croc Bridge

To cut a long Afrikaans conversation short, my father mother and I are going with some of my family to Marloth Park and driving into the Kruger
Thank you

I can't wait! Going on the 27th! Driving in on the 28th, 29th, and leaving the 30th!

Merry Christmas to you too Kamadejo!!!
So glad you following my next trip report :D :D :D Thank you :D
Here is a map to show where marloth Park is
Image

As you can see. That yellow dot near the bottom of the map is Marloth. Right on the Kruger border. Other side the crocodile river. On the website it estimates that it is 14km from croc bridge entrance gate 8)

MY WISHLIST

Nobody would guess what is first on the list

1. Cheetah!!
If I see this animal I will be over the moon! My favorite animal. And havn't seen cheetah since 1999. Although I have been to either the Kruger or Pilansberg national Park every year since then

Cheetah dad wishes for:
2. Leopard
I was lucky enough to see a leopard in the road just last month by Satara :D
But cheetah mom and cheetah dad hav't seen a nice leopard sighting also in a decade or so.

Cheetah mom wishes for:
3. Wild Dogs
Cheetah dad and I have seen wild dogs sniffing our tyres and running around our car in 2009 :D
But my mom wasn't there. So there we go :D

My idea of maximizing game viewing is to drive in the morning and afteroon, and stay at home during the heat of the day.

The gates only open at 05:30 to enter the park. So if it is a hot clear day then
EARLY MORNING DRIVE 05:30-10:30 5 hours
BREAK: 10:30-14:30 4 hours
Afternoon Drive 14:30-18:30 4 hours

So drives under these conditions would be between 80 and 100km :hmz:

So here is a route going North

Image

Going up the H4-2, s82, then s128.
Then coming back
s29, H10 and on to the s28

89km :D

And here is one going West!
Image
Heading down the s25, s26
then heading back
the H5, and H4-2 out.

91km :D

And here is a bit of both :D
North and West :D
Image

Go up the s28, then after that back down the H4-2
But heading right down the H5 until the s102
After the s102 coming down the s26, which becomes the s25.
then home :D

97km :D

If we have an overcast day we might do a long trip. Like this one
Image
Croc Bridge to Lower Sabie to Skukuza, on the main roads
Then s114 and H5 back home.
131km :D

Enjoy your trips and visits into the KN Park.

Some advice:

Staying out of the Park, you will need to queue to get through Croc Bridge, as there will be a quota. for non resident visitors into the park. Get their early, at about 430 am, and wait for gate to open. It will be worth the wait, I assure you, otherwise you might be in a 100 car long line.

You have planned good routes if you looking for Cheetah, Leopard and Dog...

1: Include Mlondozi Loop, north of LSabie, for Cheetah
2: Include Gomondwane loop also at least once, for Cheetah and Leopard
3: Mpondo Dam area not producing much in the animals you looking, stick to areas closer to CrocBridge and Lower Sabie,

Cheers

Fizzpop thank you very much. Very helpful information.
I had no idea there was a quota  Although it makes sense :hmz:

Say we were to arrive at opening time (05:30). How many cars would you estimate from your experience would be ahead of us in the line??
Secondly, is it worth going after the line? Say at half past 6?

the other Shlep is filing out the forms at the gate :wall:
I have printed out ahead of time the "Registration Docket For SA National Parks" filled it out and made photo copies to save time.
Is there anything else I can do to save time?

Thank you I will check out your suggestions on the drives :D

Hello all!!

Well I just got back from a wonderful stay in Marloth Park :D
I really enjoyed my day trips down into the Kruger :D

But I am dead tired!! You know how it is when you go on early morning drives at the park every day and you get home

But I have a job tomorrow that stretches from the early morning and over the new year. So I'm afraid you will have to wait for me EVEN LONGER for the trip report :wall:
It's only going to be a TR of 4 drives  So not going to be very long. Once I start writing it will be done soon

I wish you all a fantastic new years celebration

Day 1 - Marloth

So as you all know we were staying at Marloth Park with family. For all of you who do not quite know how close this is to the kruger ...

Image

That was the view from my room!!! That is the crocodile river and otherside is the kruger :D

On the Marloth side of the river the antelope are a bit tame for my liking :naughty: But thank goodness not as bad as the Letaba Bushbuck!

Look at these zebra standing by this house. Looking almost like statues
Image

Here is dad
Image
Image
And little one
Image

We didn't take many photos because we were trying to make it to lunch!
But on the way we saw
Wildebees
Impala
Zebra
Kudu
Waterbuck

I was spoilt to a really nice room!
Image
Image

This was all seen without trying to see animals!! We were just trying to drive to the house!

During lunch we heard a very odd noise from the back door
Turns out these little Warties were thirsty!
Image
Hope the video can play :hmz:
Here is Oom Fanie filming with a far more fancy camera than I have
Image

We also saw them the next day
Image

Then for the rest of the afternoon we sat on the deck with cold drinks enjoying nature

This man was kind enough to bless us with his presence on the Kruger side :D
Image
Notice how lush the bush is! Then he came for a drink :D
Image
Image

Martin decided its time to put things in perspective and demonstrate his power compared to the elephant
Image
Image

As the day got cooler the Hippos started to show themselves
Image

The day ended with a fire and a very tasty braai!

After enjoying the beauty and peace of the outside and some star gazing, we hit the bed at an early hour. Ready for an early morning the next day

Thank you Kamadejo Anne-MarieOssendryver and Scouter!

My Oom Fanie has before taken his entire leave for the year to stay at Marloth. So the one year he spent his whole December there  What a pleasure!! I have seen pictures where from the house they saw the whole big five during that time!!

The leopard was not even the Kruger side of the river  It was walking casually next to the Marloth fence and then settled in a tree not far from the Marloth fence by my Uncle's neighbor's house!!!

The lions came to drink on the Kruger side a few times in that month

So lots of game can be seen in Marloth! And Marloth has a game reserve as well. If you are a resident of Marloth you have entry. The game reserve has lots of general game I am told. And like all these areas naturally has leopards. and even a pride of lions :D

@Crested Barbet - the access road between the N4 and Marloth is not good at all  Not in a good state! But the main tar road in Marloth (Olifant) is perfect!! They gave out 94 speeding fines in November
Some of the dirt roads in Marloth are terrible though.

@ColWD - yeah it does seem the people like the warthogs :D

Went up the s28, then ww took Duke and from Duke up the main road to Lower Sabie and had breakfast!
then back south down the 10km dirt road and the H4-2 back out :D
I didn't take a photo of this planned route so here is a similar one
Image
Just minus the part above Lower Sabie!

Booking

Booking ... now there was something else!!
We booked 2 days before. Thank you Ossendryver for the heads up :D
We booked in for tuesday at croc bridge and made our 3 person booking when there were only 5 ppl left to be able to book before they had booked out the quota at the gate for the day
We tried to book wednesday in at croc bridge but it was already booked up 3 days in advance
We literally got the last 3 bookings in at Malalane gate

So we got up at 4 in the morning. Had a quick cup of coffee and packed our cooler bag and we were off to croc bridge entrance

We got there just before 5 and could not believe our eyes ... there were 25 to 30 cars parked in front of us waiting for gate opening at half past 5
How dare every booker want to go on an early morning drive :rtm: :rtm: :rtm: :rtm: :rtm:
Once the gate opened, they would only let bunches of ten cars or so go through at a time to the croc Bridge entrance by the camp.
Everyone who had not payed had to pay then, and those that had payed just had to fill in forms. It took so long :( :(
We only got in the actual park at hald past 6 :wall: :wall: :wall: :wall: :wall: :wall:

It was already getting quite hot and we knew we didn't have long before it was unbearably hot and the animals would disappear under tree cover! Definately a huge downfall to dayvisiting. especially in December :sniper:
