So we have had the opportunity to visit Kruger for a couple of weekend breaks.......not really enough to do a full out Trip Report but thought it would be nice to share a couple of pics of some nice sightings we had....hope you enjoy!!!

Kruger March 2010

On our trip up in March we came across some lions on the S65......this one looked like he unfortunately had an injury to his forepaws almost like a nerve problem......walked with real floppy paws.....

Image

His friends were fine.......just REALLY tired!!

Image

Image

We also stayed at Lower Sabie....and were travelling back along S128 when we came apon a traffic jam. "Cheetah" we were told!!!! Through the cars and grass and leaves.....

Image

What we soon realised was that there were two of them. They were really creeping around the bushes.....very interested in some local impala.....then they disappeared

The next thing the impala burst out the bushes......

Image

a flying cat crossed the road........chaos in the car park!!! Then no sign of the cats.....cars drove off....there were only 3 of us left....in the quiet you could hear.......bones crunching!!!!!! Then a head popped out of a bush......blood smeared!

Image

We would only catch glimpses of them now and again.....the vultures started to arrive...

Image

Then we noticed some movement off in the distance......hyaena closing in!!! The cheetahs moved off, and the hyaena took over.....

Image

Image

Image

Image

The cheetahs then comforted each other on the loss of their kill.....and walked off into the grass. The hyaena finished off the stolen meal and disappeared as well. What an afternoon!

- Elsa, flying cheetah, kath u.k., carolynn, shi, billyf, p@m, kamadejo: thanks
- Micetta:  .....
- meandering mouse: yeah.....poor cheetahs always seem to get the short end of the stick :?

Kruger May 2010

So in May we had the opportunity to head East again.....we were travelling along Phabeni road when we came apon a significant traffic jam......spots in the grass.....

Image

Image

We were told there were 3 leopards......3!!!!!??????! A mom and 2 cubs......so we waited and waited.....but after the initial glimpse of what we thought was a cub, we didn't see much for about 2 hours.......lunch at Skukuza was calling. After a lunch break we headed back to the area that we saw the leopard in.........with a vague thought that it would be nice to see if they were still hanging around........we came around the bend.......still huge traffic jam.......between the cars and bushes........

Image

Image

We had been told earlier that they had made a kill.....now we had seen it!!! Mom had to do most of the heavy lifting....she moved the impala into a bush and they settled there to fill their tummies....

Image

Image

Image

It was really difficult to get all 3 in one pic....

Image

but we didn't really care.....what an awsome sighting!!!

And then we had to leave as we were ataying outside the park and gate closing time was approaching
:hmz:

- Jackal x1
- Hyaena
- Martial Eagle
- Brownheaded parrot

So, just a couple of pics of our weekend in Paradise.....

Winding our way down the S65 past the N'waswitshaka waterhole.....something dissapears into the grass next to a car stopped up ahead....

Image

2 males moved off into the grass. Unfortunately terrible pics of them as the sun hadn't come up yet :(

Further down the road, a bakkie was stopped......they were looking at....

Image

Image

In total, 9 cubs and 3 females......my camera was burning

Image

Image

Thank you all for the encouraging replies!!!

After the lions moved off into the grass, we called past Transport dam....mist was still rising....

Image

A Coucal was in a nearby bush....

Image

We moved on from there to head up to Satara....near the Southern Most Baobab....a Martial....

Image

Image

Before gate closing we made our way back along S100.....Elephant sunset....

Image

And just in the gates....full moon....

Image

Image

The next morning, while packing the car, their was a loud noise that sounded like an electric shaver coming from the far side of the ring of huts.....and it got closer.....until I looked up from packing the car and 2 Honey Badgers scuttled past....clearly not happy with each other.....the one then came to raid our bins....

Image

We then headed out for our morning drive before heading home....and we had a nice surprise waiting...... :popcorn

Thanks again for all the awsome comments!!!!

So after watching the in camp scavenger for a while we headed out along the S100.....which on this brief trip, was VERY quiet

We did come upon this chap in full cry....

Image

And this chap, initially running along the road.....

Image

We popped in at Gudzani dam.....nice to see water in it! Then made our way down towards Nwanetsi.......at one of the stream bed crossings, we came across 2 stopped cars....... :hmz: .......a sliver of white moved behind a rock..... :hmz: .....looked like a heron's head.......couldn't have been more wrong

Image

....will have to continue when page turns!!!

- Just nature: thanks for getting page turned!
- John n poppy: the lens is never as big as you want it to be!!!

So the leopard popped out from behind the ridge....

Image

And headed for the road....

Image

He then sauntered up the road......

Image

And then went over to smell and mark a bush.....

Image

He then dissappeared into the bushes on the edge of the river bed. Now this specific river bed has a loop that goes down to the river bed a little further along the road....so considering the direction he was heading in, we thought it was a possibility that he would walk down the river bed......so us and another car headed for this loop....and waited.....

......and waited......

......and waited....... :hmz:

No show.....so we decided to head back to the road that goes through the river bed and see if may be he had lay down in the river bed......

......initially nothing......drive up the otherside of the river bank.......turn around...... the leopard pops out of the river bed reeds about 50m up the river bed......Right, he is heading up the river bed.......back to the loop road........waiting......

......waiting........waiting........other car drives off with a shrug..... :hmz: ......
.......... ........
........

- Kamadejo:  sorry couldn't resist!!!
- Micetta:
- Janeli:

So there we sat all on our lonesomes......staring at an empty riverbed.......

And then I glanced at the far end of the loop....in the direction in which we were expecting Mr Leopard to make his appearance.......and there was movement in the bushes.....   ......HE had Arrived.......

Image

After a quick roll in the sand......he stood up....

Image

And headed in our direction

Image

We have a theory that because we were sitting there with the engine off, not making much noise, the leopard was unconcerned with us......so we just looked on wide eyed.....

Image

Image

Stopped at a nearby bush to scent mark again.....

Image

Note the francolin in the background....it followed him all the way along the loop....giving the occassional squaaaaak to let everyone know there was a predator on the move :D :D :D :D

Image

Image

Eventually Dad was getting a bit uncomfortable with his window wide open and a fully grown leopard fast approaching the front of the car on his side......so the window went up ever so slightly
Now came the mad scramble for a smaller lens.....

Image

Phew!!!!!!!!

He walked straight past like we were just another tree......awsome!!!!

He then moved off into the thicket at the other end of the loop. We hung around to see if he would walk into the river bed further up.....but no luck.......but we definitely weren't complaining!!!!!!

Eish......to get any closer you would have had to be supper!!!!

Ok we back from KNP......great sightings but not the greatest photo opportunities.....but def not complaining!!!!!

From friday afternoon......we had quite a quiet afternoon en-route to Skukuza from Numbi gate......just this little guy......terrible pic, looking into the sun!!!!

Image

The next morning found us heading out on the Lower Sabie road to be greeted by a lovely sunrise......

Image

At the high level bridge, a Giant Kingfisher......

Image

Image

with the sun peeking over the horizon.....

Image

On the Salitjie Road, an early morning hyena....

Image

Near Mlondozi, a White headed vulture (sorry....had to crop hugely!!!!)....

Image

and a ?shrike......

Image

a hippo contemplating the rapids at the Lower Sabie bridge....

Image

and a .......going to need some help here with the next one......?dark chanting goshawk/gabar goshawk......

Image

Image

on the S28

And then near the end of the S28, there were a couple of cars and a safari van stopped....the safari guy waved for us to stop while we were still quite a distance away......and boy were we glad we did......

Image

to be cont.......

Thanks for all the great comments!!!!!

Early the next morning we set out along the S65, where we had seen the pride with all the cubs on a prev trip......just after the waterhole we came across a carcass (we thought possibly a wildebeest) about 80m from the road. We decided to have coffee there and soon enough hyenas arrived....

sorry had to crop these quite a bit....

Image

Take aways....

Image

Image

A traffic jam built up....and we heard someone who came from the opposite direction say that there were lions up ahead with cubs -so after finishing up our coffee we went to take a look. About 2km from the hyenas, a shape in the grass caught our eyes......

Image

A lioness with 2 small cubs.....feeding on a kill!!!! And you could actually see the drag marks going over the road.....unfortunately they were just behind a thicket so no clear pics of them.....

Image

Image

Image

Mom moved the carcass deeper into the bush which reduced visibility even more.....so we moved on .....and came upon a traffic jam.....the pride with the cubs!

Image

The grass was a bit on the long side and unfortunately it was warming up so the pride did not hang around for long.....

Image

Image

Image

and then they melted into the bush......

Thanks flutterby!

The first weekend of Aug sounded like a good time to visit KNP and we were lucky to get a booking at Satara. We entered the park late on the friday afternoon at Orpen. Just after Bobbejaan Krans, something in the bush caught our eye......

Image

Image

Unfortunately the sun was setting behind him so battled with the light quite a bit!! Evidently he has been seen in this area quite reg....so will have to keep tabs on him.....very relaxed with the vehicles around

Image

Sunset over Nsemani Dam

Image

A quick supper and off to bed. The next morning was very misty, lovely damp smell in the air. We decided to do the S100, which was shrouded in mist.....

Image

Otherwise S100 was very quiet!

We made our way down to N'wanetsi, across on the tar road, and then down to the S125, down the S36 and across the S126 and back up to Satara. Along the way we came across.....

Image

Can never get enough of the rollers

Image

A close shave.....

Image

"Who's there?"

Image

Some lion had brought down a buffalo in the last few days just South of the S125 turn off off the H1-2......not much of the kill left and at midday the lions were pretty much K.O.

Image

To be continued....
