Yesterday afternoon when I got back from the office I sat outside with a cold drink and enjoyed the bush. Red-billed oxpeckers are nesting in a weeping wattle next to the caravan and I watched them coming and going, a waterbuck walked past, and some dwarf mongooses also came to visit. They were not at all sure about me though and quickly disappeared back into the long grass. I could watch where they were by the grass moving about but could not see them!

There are lots of ellies about at the moment and I have seen them on the road each time over the past 3 days.

Oh EJ, I often think about how lucky you are living where you are. I can just imagine how satisfying that was. Thanks for the continual updates, if we cannot be there ourselves, your reports are the next best thing, and we are so grateful to you.  I wish you a very satisfying 2014 with many sightings to report back to us, and lots of time to just sit back and take in the beauty of nature.

Yes the small things around us are just or even more interesting than the big things some of the time.
Many thanks for your updates

Thanks for sharing all your experiences - big, small, exciting, scary, etc.

Oh to be able to do what you're doing.

I think one of my loveliest memories of Kruger was sitting outside our chalet in Malelane watching the bird bath and the birds on the lawn.

Watching "little things" means a lot.

Marula season is upon us......so I am busy lobbing fruit over the fence to try to discourage the ellies from trying to come into camp to get them. We have had several visits from the ellies......really close to the caravan several times!

And ellies coming into the garden down at the office too. They have completely flattened the fence next to the river. It was repaired a couple of weeks ago, but now is totally destroyed! A huge bull came in on Thursday morning and eventually walked through between the office and the fence to next door house - a small gap! - and out through our front gateway.

This morning 2 more ellies came in, and while we watched them from the door they came so close to us they could have stretched out a trunk and touched us. After doing some pruning of branches and bushes one went back to the river area, and the other went through the gate and off.

Last week we had a trip to Skukuza and on the way home had a tssessebe walk down the road towards us! He seemed a bit lost, and was moving fast, but we did get a couple of photos.

And last night there was a hippo fight near camp.....blood-curdling noises!

Here is a video of the ellie in the front of the office, and strolling through the gate.

I am in Cape Town for a few days and have access to good and fast connection so may try to upload more photos and videos before I start traveling around and have no contact.
