Your life sounds really interesting and at times really hectic.
I used to use rifles when I lived on a farm when I was growing up. We mostly used 22 calibre (which would be useless if you're using it to protect people from animals). Also used shotguns, but Dad wouldn't let us use anything bigger. I guess my childhood was different than most girls - learning to shoot etc. Nowadays I live in a city and absolutely hate the thought of shooting anything (other than for my protection). We don't even own a rifle.

We will request that you be our driver (can only try) - can we book our drives before we arrive at Kruger or do we have to wait til we get to camp before we book them.

You'll probably have to PM me with your name if I have to organize a drive before we arrive.

Yes, still no car. SMS on Friday morning was that the engine is on its way back......Hopefully will find out more on Monday when workshop manager is around.

Still waiting for car news......and it nearly caused a real problem because I need to get to Skukuza today as I am doing another bush camp. Fortunately the lead guide came up with a plan, and I am waiting now to be collected.

He nearly had to make another plan though...... Last night on my way back from the ablution block in the wee small hours of the night I was walking under the big jackalberry tree (you will know the one I mean if you have been to camp) when something made me look round. There was a big hyena following me, and it was just a couple of bounds behind me. I drew in a big breath to shout at it, then realised if I did that the whole camp would be awake and maybe panicking........so I let it out in a sort of snarl/spit and waved my arms in the air and stamped towards it. I hoped to look menacing!!!!

To my relief it worked and the hyena stopped and abruptly turned and disappeared into the shadows. I went back to the caravan and bed.

Checked this morning and there are tracks all over the parking area, and even next to my caravan.....seems it sniffed around after I got back.

I am glad it was only one hyena......2 or 3 might have been different.

I suspect it came in from the staff side, as the gates there are not always securely shut, especially when the water pump folk are busy moving backwards and forwards at night.

Hi EJ. Hyena in the middle of the night in camp??? Wow you are brave - if it was me I would have died on the spot! And he could have had a nice meal. Take care.

Gosh - hyena in camp. It really makes you think that the torch (the one you should always carry at night) should be one of those heavy duty ones (like a baton). Although I suspect if it wanted to attack even a heavy torch might not be much help. Very brave of you EJ - I suppose if you had screamed there would have been more people at risk.   :hmz:

I tell the story NOT to make you think I am brave.....but so that if anything similar happens to you, you can remember what to do! Hyenas are mostly cowards......in fact many animals are if you stand up to them. That is why monkeys and baboons so often seem to pick on women who all too often scream and back away.

Shocking experience EJ! No matter which way you look at it!

Glad you were able to make him go away!

Please be careful. :hmz:

I can't believe you are still waiting for your car!

That's it. I am never going to camp at Malelane.......Ever!

It is bad enough at Balule when it seems as if the Hyena are sharing your tent. They sound so close sometimes.
I always go to the toilet at night.

Thanks anyway EJ. Now I know what to do, except I would probably have a heart attack in an instant and become doggy food. :D

   But not THIS woman. Well done, EJ - you kept your head and acted appropriately. If he had found food, you could have a whole pack of them to contend with in future.
