:) :) :) :)

so.... i left punda maria and headed south along the h1-7......

a purple roller had just picked up breakfast and decided to have take-aways

Image

so off he went.

Image
Image
Image

a short while later i came across this decent looking fella.

Image

i found him near "babalalalala".......

so maybe that's who he is ?????

Image
Image
Image

a lone mother and her foal ??????????

Image

boyela always seems to have a resident jumbo utilizing the concrete dam...

Image
Image
Image
Image

i never took the chance to have a look at the new day visitors centre at shingwedzi when i passed through there on new year's day

so i popped in to have a squiz

Image
Image

they even have their own kiosk !!!!

quite exposed, but after a few years maybe so more trees would have established themselves.

Image
Image

Image

still going south on the h1-6

these stunning trees

Image

and elephant activity in the shingwedzi river.....

Image

this scat was on top of the signboard to the old main road loop

and it looks very similar to the scat i photogrphed near ngobeni on new year's day

Image

any ideas of its source ????

( i know it is squeezed from a sphincter muscle......... i would like to know who that muscle belongs to !!)

at a stop on the mingerhout loop overlooking the confluence of the letaba and tsendze

was this very disciplined family of elephant crossing the tsendze.

Image
Image

note how they keep their rigid formation throughout

and even after having crossed the river they still seem to keep a structured formation.....

good to see families that still have that structure in their lives.....

Image
Image
Image

they had barely moved out of view when another group appeared in the river bed

in contrast to the previous group this one was more of a scattering

as they loosely made their way up the far embankment

probably one of those modern liberal families.........

Image
Image
Image
Image

a short stop on the letaba bridge were this b/t was sunning himself

Image

and the late afternoon spider web

Image

and then off to camp..........

an interesting sight were these bundles of mopani trees

having been cut and bundled on the side of the road.....

Image

i wondered if it is part of a verge clearing exercise that would assist road users on this busy stretch in seeing any animals that might be on the roadside

or.... if it is merely an economic process of harvesting firewood for the local communities....

just before camp is this secluded little water hole with the same characters in it as when i was there last year...

anyone who was at letaba in december will remember them..........

Image
Image

eventually i arrived at letaba and i could soak up the view of the river from my garden cottage

Image

:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

a short drive south seemed to be a good idea....

so off i went.

this is the reason i can never stay at balule...........

i am far too boisterous for the place...............

Image

lots of roadside activity from the tiny ones.

Image
Image

and a hunting party of matebele practicing its various formations

as it prepares for the onslaught on some unprotected termite colony....

Image
Image
Image
Image

the low level bridge was such a calm, serene area..........

Image
Image
Image
Image

this lapwing assuming the role of nest inspector

Image
Image

and this little beetle reminded me of one of the knights of old with his ornate shield on his back.

Image

and this ??????????????????????

:? :? :? :?

a route map for the balule to olifants river rally

Image

took the s44 before heading home

Image

another one of those precariously high foam nests.......

Image

and these chaps fooling around

Image
Image

the last bit of sun for the day for this group on the makhadzi

so..... i figured i would head on the h9 towards déjà vu dam

found this left handed ellie at the salad bar

Image
Image

just before the nhlanganini loop .......way ahead in the distance i see two jackal...

one adult and one junior... and they ran in different directions ..

shortly before an oncoming vehicle zoomed past them..

i went on up ahead slowly looking on either side of the road..

then i saw something in the under growth...

Image

a juvie jackie.............................

Image

then in the road ahead was the concerned parent who seemed desperate to find it's offspring.

it was running ahead of me.............

and then i noticed that it was cantering almost like a dog........

not trotting along as most jackals normally do...

then noticed why.......

it was a side striped jackal.......

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

first one i had ever seen.....

déjà vu dam was desolate so i carried on westwards and took the last low maint road on the left before masorini

also nothing much besides this grysbok

Image
Image

i looped back towards masorini and stopped to snap this chappie quenching his thirst

and using the step that sanparks installed specificaly for this use.

Image

Image

then i spotted a white bakkie heading towards me with a green ribbon.

i caught the driver's attention by asking him to explain the meaning of the green ribbon,........... :? :? :? :?

my vehicle was sans ribbon.....

it had been flapping around in the wind for 3 weeks and there was nothing left of it so i had removed it

he was about to answer .............when i asked him if he was "wayne"

:? :? :? :?

and i then introduced myself after he had confirmed his identity :D :D :D

can't be too careful who you might be talking to in these parts of the country

so sprocky asked me where i was off to and i shrugged my shoulders in reply

he went on to tell me how he had been sitting for about an hour,,

with a young leopard just a short way up the s51 on the way to sable dam,...

and that perhaps we should try our luck and see if it was still there..............

as you will see

it was..... :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

thanks sprocky......

and then............

after his dental display he got up......

crossed to the otherside of the road and up a termite mound to have a scout about..

and then he sauntered off.........................

so..... when i got back to letaba i took a stroll with my camera

and came across a troupe of vervets busy interacting with each other under the protection of a big tree...

i spent about and hour with them and took about 500 photos

of which i will share a whole bunch with you......

the first ones i want to share, is the saga of a youngster

who is learning jump off the ground and to catch on to the branches above him..........

:wall: :wall: :wall: :wall: :wall:

share his frustrations ......................

Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image

and so he sat and stared at the branches for a while .........................

before joining his siblings at play......

:D :D :D :D

now one of the remarkable appendages of these primates is indeed their tails.....

the advantages and uses of the tail are numerous..........

but none so humorous as ..............................

so i have been"away" for over a month ........... just plain "slapgat"

let me carry on for anyone who might still be interested ....

more antics to amuse and amaze...........

.and sympathise too..........

perhaps.......

here it seems as though they are laughing at a really good joke......

Image
Image

and now they just carry on screaming at each other and teasing the kids....

Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image

eventually one last plea for this to stop

please..............

Image

one of the kids is just plain exhausted........

Image

another looks up to the heavens for help....

Image

and another has just had too much.........

and sobs his heart out ...................

so...................... i had been visiting letaba regularly for the past few years

and i always stay in the same unit. (thanks to the very obliging staff at reception!!)

every morning i am greeted with a big smile from the house keeping lady

and i greet her in return with "good morning ma'am !! how are you ???" to which she always replies........"....thanks and you!!!"

this morning was no different....

Image

so i figured to day was my last full day at letaba so i would wonder around a bit and see what is about at this time of day.

Image

the usual suspects

Image
.......
Image
.......
Image
......
Image

then i heard some activity in the nearby tree .....................

Image

ok......just two birds...................... no big deal.........................

hang on.............

a jacobin cuckoo and a toppie (dark-capped bulbul)

the toppie landed and was foraging

Image
.........

and the cuckoo followed
..............................
Image
....
Image
........................

after finding a cicada
....................
Image
....
...
Image

they both returned to the branches

....
....
Image
.........

and the toppie proceeded to feed the cuckoo.
....
...
Image
...
Image
...
..

never seen that before...........................

then the toppie flew off to find more food to feed "its chick"

....
...
Image
..
..
Image
..
..
..
then i heard a heck of a commotion

as if there a street fight was going on somewhere..............................

so...........as i mentioned a lot earlier..................

while the cuckoo was conning the bulbul

there was a hellova racket coming from close by......

sounded like a street fight of sorts.

not too difficult to find the culprits.........

these two squirrels were the guilty party.....

.

Image
Image
Image
.

from what i could gather at first

was that the one fluff tail was sorting the other fluff tail out because it was being lazy...........

it seemed that the lazy one was not moving fast enough...

and the other one kept on trying to give the lazy one a push.......

.

Image
Image
Image
Image
.

to get it moving...

...
Image
.
a startled starling stood staring

as the saga unfolded

.

Image
.

the lazy one was so stubborn at times

that it even pushed up against a concrete step.....

.
Image
.

the squirrel even tried to give the standing staring startled starling a shove

but it scurried away.........

.

Image
.

here we see again how the lazy one stubbornly pushed against the paving in an attempt stop being shoved from behind....
.

Image
.

but the bully carried on wrestling ..........
.

Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
.

and the lazy one kept on stopping ....

it almost seemed as though the lazy one wanted to get a push every now and again...

.

Image
.

eventually they scampered off into the undergrowth..
.

so.......... after the two happy squirrels had scampered off into the undergrowth

i continued with my walk-about.

magnificent trees in the morning light.

.
Image
.
Image
.

the "bush chicken" that is so noisy every morning
.
Image
.

a starling admiring the flora
.
Image
.

then some "cackling women" making good use of their long red bills
.
Image
.
Image
.
Image
.
Image
.
Image
.

a juvenile tugging at something that looks like an animal hide ???
.
Image
.

another example of the symbiosis between the plant life
.
Image
.

and then ......................................

can you see it ??????????

.

.
Image
.
it can see you !!!!!!!!!!
.
:hmz: :hmz:
.

and a morning chat on the fence
.
Image
.

wonder if he ate it ???????????
.
Image
.

.

then a sombre sight of a deceased bat lying "in state" on the slate

with the first of the funeral flowers laid next to him as a sign of respect.

.
Image
.

now .... here is a worrying sight.

these two trees just outside my "garden cottage" have been, over the past few years, showing signs of old age,

and this year, they look even worse.........

i am not sure if they will still be alive when i next return.

.
Image
.
Image
.

.

this is my "cottage"
.
Image
.

now.... having spent a large proportion of the day in the rest camp it was time for an outing....

ground hornbill in the riverbed
.
Image
.

some plovers having a dispute
.
Image
.
Image
.

a group of buffs on the move
.
Image
.
a trunk-tango
.
Image
.
Image
.

pretty flowers of the veld
.
Image
.
Image
.

a roller sitting on a branch
.
Image
.

a roller not sitting on a branch.
.
Image
.

the tenderness and enjoyment of mutual grooming
.
Image
.
Image

.
i think this boy has been eating liquorice

.
Image

.
Image

.

Image
.

a quick afternoon drink
.
Image
.
Image
.

and now an interesting observation

some evidence of the ability that the impala possesses when they are able to "dislodge" their teeth within their gums

and spread them apart to allow them to be more effective as a grooming tool

.

so.........on my way back to letaba for my last night

i was entertained by this family

it seems as though this one chap was so desperate to get to the grubs

and insecty type creepy crawlies

that he ripped the bark off the trunk of the tree to get to them

.
Image
.
Image
.

displaying remarkable acrobatic prowess
.
Image
.
Image
.

this, while babyboon had to be helped onto the "saddle" by elderboon
.
Image
.

so that he could kick his heels into maboon's ribs to get her to move along
.
Image
.

and just as you thought it was safe to leave the north with all its "bee-catchers"

the last of the evening meal was being plucked out of the air

.
Image
.
Image
.
Image
.
Image
.
Image
.
Image
.
Image
.

back at camp the last of my braai ammunition lay ready
.
Image
.

so i struck up the fire at my garden cottage
.
Image
.

and waited for the full moon to rise over the letaba river
.
Image
.
Image
.
Image
.

and a last peek at the moon through the acacia
.
Image
.
the next day i would be leaving for my final destination of the 4 week excursion

lower sabie.....
. :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :| :|

so.......................

time to head south from letaba to lower sabie...

luckily the braai i had enjoyed on the previous night consisted of more solids than liquids

because the first sighting i had when i turned onto the h1-5

had been deposited there by someone who had more liquids than solids

.
Image
.

then there were the lovely little purple flowers
.
Image
.

and the wild hibiscus
.
Image
.

i decided to take the s 39 down past roodewal

one of my favourite routes with its variety of fauna and

interesting geological formations

this proved to be more frustrating than enjoyable because of the poor condition of the road

i did stop at roodewal water hole
.
just to let my vital organs settle down amidst the corrugations
.
Image
.

and then a bit later to study the various profiles of the juvenile wildebeest
at first it looked like he had a booger

.
Image
.
but at second glance saw it was just a bit of salad
.
Image
.

and then this lady who had just left the hairdresser after getting a blonde hair-do for her fringe
.
Image
.
Image
.

and the disapproving long face of the adult who probably had to pay for this fashion make over
.
Image
.

i eventually made it back onto the h1-4

:o :o

a short way down the road i was flagged down by an oncoming vehicle

it was an italiano pappa anda hizza famiglia

he wazza waving frantically and even before i could come to a stop

he was leaning out of the driver's side window

and said

liyons liyons liyons

ezza 90 liyons

jussta necksttoo thè rod

itsa fô kilowmita uppa thè rod

yoo musta gowwanna looook

ezza 90

and then he sped off ..............................................................................

wow.....

i thought ninety lions

yô yô yô

so i looked on the map and then realized that he was directing me to the s 90

:hmz: :hmz: :hmz: :hmz: :hmz:

which was just up ahead

i took the s 90 and cruised up for about 7 km and then saw 3 other vehicles parked

what a bargain,,,,,, i thought only 3 other cars at such a great sighting,,,,,,,

i stopped next to the other cars expecting to see at least a few lions

but there was nothing :slap: :slap: :slap: :slap:

after a while the one driver must have seen my puzzled expression as i was scanning the plains

and he pointed out the spot.

.
Image
.
Image
.
Image
.

so that was the lion sighting

then i remembered why i prefer ants and dung sightings

some big birds
.
Image
.

and a crazy bird
.
Image
.

the last baobab for the trip
.
Image
.

kumana dam
.
Image
.
Image
.

mazithi
.
Image
.

and then the ever present ellephant
.
Image
.
Image
.

where ever you looked
.
Image
.
Image
.

then i saw what, at a distance, looked like a gemsbok when i saw the horn(s)
.
Image
.

it was in fact a waterbuck with an interesting horn configuration
.
Image
.
Image
.

i was pleased to see that there was a fair amount of water in the upper reaches of the mlondozi stream
.
Image
.

and then, if you want to see a reedbuck then head on down the h10
.
Image
.
Image
.
8) 8) 8)

so........

a grey start to the day

.
Image
.

three braais left before departure,, so i needed to get to komatipoort to get some chicken and tjops and braai beverages

took the "blacktop" to croc bridge

this sanparks emblem eating toffees

.
Image
.
Image
.

a purple morning glory to add some colour to the dull day
.
Image
.

a horse with dirty pyjamas
.
Image
.

a fluffing martial
.
Image
.
Image
.
Image
.

then this warthog with a huge pair of tusks
.
Image
.

and a huge pair of "warts"
.
Image
.

and huge pair of ...............ears ????????
.
Image
.

a zinnia
.
Image
.

and some other bright wild ones
.
Image
.
Image
.

a brief stop at the gezanifombi dam
.
Image
.

where these blue gnus were having a late morning snooze
.
Image
.

so..........

here is an astounding observation

a grandfather monkey with his distinctive grey hair enjoying a morning snack

.
Image
.

amazing how old men often have such big ears with those dark sun spots
.
Image
.
Image
.
and wrinkly body parts
.
Image
.

then there was someone in the tree above.... who was adorned with a "blue bulls tow-bar cover"
.

so....

later that afternoon i took a drive to mlondozi via the loop

and encountered this feeding flock of

martins ??

swallows ???

they were very busy

and it never fails to astound me how they manage to even see what they are feeding on let alone to catch and devour

Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
.

there was a weaver that decided to join in
.
Image
.

and even a "bush chicken" that wandered into the dining area
.
Image
.

and a lost starling as well.
.
Image
Image
.

and a short distance away was the resting area
.
Image
.

have to admit that i thought there would be a lot more water in mlondozi after the new year's rainfall
.
Image

:) :) :) :)

so....

the day dawned sunny and i figured i should go and rest next to the random nameless pond on the s 21.

but,, first the daily dose of wild flowers :gflower: :gflower:

now,,,,,, this is one plant that you actually do not want to have a dose of

the poison apple (you know the story of snow white) :hmz: :hmz:
.
Image
.

but this is the real thing (not even the huntsman can save you)

this can kill you............................

.
Image
.

and then the wild foxglove......

.
Image
.
and.... what looks to me like a wild sesame (says me)
.
Image
.

and then a creamy coloured one ?????
.
Image
.
a newly built pyramid
.
Image
.

and a shongololo
.
Image
.

and then i arrived and parked next to the water
.
Image
.

and watched the gyppos enjoying some family time
.
Image
Image
.

a bit of a scary moment as i thought dick had tracked me down
.
Image

but this was just a member of the title

going for a dip

(he seemed a bit tyred but it was just the tread)

.
Image
.
Image
.
Image
.
Image
.

so while i am sat there all quiet and comfy

a huge grey form appeared next to my vehicle and moseyed along to the pond to do what huge grey forms do

.
Image
.

so close that i had to use my 85mm lens to capture the entire being

as he enjoyed the water

.
Image
.
Image
.

and made stereotypical shapes with his trunk
.
Image.
.
Image
.

and then splashed off through the pond
.
Image
.

now.................

here's the thing..............

did you know that the common factor between the elephant, the rhino and the hippo is that they are all bolus poopers

(even though the territorial hippo likes to splash his poo about)

however,,,, the elllie is the odd one out......... :hmz: :hmz: :hmz:

why, you may ask....?? :-? :-? :-? :-?

the elephant is the only one of the bolus poopers that defecates on the move

as the following images will show.................

so after that sphincter display i decided to move on back to lower sabie...

dick's brother sunning himself

the factory where they make "bronzed" elephants.........

.

.

a short distance from the mlondozi water hole on the h10

a white stork
