Unread postby tanjan » Wed Mar 08, 2006 4:16 pm

Hi there

does anyone have any information of the types of biomes found in the KNP and what plants and animals can be found in these areas

ie Acacia woodland - may attract giraffes etc.
Riverine forest, Mopani forest, Sourveld etc.

Thanks
Tanja

Jacana publishers map has detailed information on the different ecozones and are shaded in different colours on the map so you know where you are, and they have a few additional booklets on the subject.

A link provided by Marco: National Geographic. You can zoom in on any part of the world, but at the moment of writing the site is partially off the air.

Hi Tanja. If you go to this page on the Jacana Media website, you can order some of the books mentioned by mikev at very low prices. The Ecozone Map will cost you $4 and The Kruger Map will set you back $4.50, excluding postage. I think you will find both very interesting reading. :D

Could anyone explain the difference/relationship between biome and ecozone ?

I sort of understand a biome to be like say FYNBOS BIOME ,
and ecozone say RENOSTERVELD a special , particular sort of fynbos.

The Jacana publications differentiate between various types of SAVANNAH BUSHVELD BIOMES for eg;
- RIVERINE
- ALLUVIAL
- MOPANE
- DELAGOA THORNVELD
- OLIFANTS RUGGED VELD etc. ecozones.

When using the map while travelling the differentiation realy is apparent esspecialy the vegetation and geology. The animals are less inclined (I think anyway) to specifically prefer a particular ecozone. The seasonal and rainfall conditions are more influential to animals I think.

Anyway I rate the Jacana map .
