Tips for plant identification

Unread postby naturelover » Wed Aug 08, 2012 8:57 am

Hi all

Here are some tips for photographig plants you want identified:
- Whenever possible provide close up photographs of the flowers.
Many plants are most easily identified by their flowers and in some cases identification is impossible without flowers.
- Provide close up photos of the leaves, stems and fruit/seedpods
Some plants can only identified from a single characteristic and others only from a combination of characterisitcs
- Provide a short description of features that can't be discerned from photos such as the texture of the leaves and stems or the scent of the flowers, leaves or sap.
- Describe the habitat as this also helps
- Include the date on which the photo was taken especially with flowers and fruits as ths helps determine the flowering time.
Ask not what your plant can do for you but what you can do for your planet.

Thanks for the useful and practical tips Naturelover. I sometimes find it a bit difficult to identify plants and trees especially those that are less commonly seen  .
Do not support Circuses that uses wild and other animals to perform circus acts to amuse people
