On our last trip to the Kruger National Park (November 2011), the sightings started out very slow as we entered into the Park.

After a while I started to notice the beautiful flowers that were blooming and realised yet again that there is more to the Kruger than chasing that next cat sighting, or even looking for that next lifer ...

Here is some of the flowers we (Leeukos, SO & Don Tour Guide ) saw that day.

So next time you are driving in the park, look around and take note of the different trees, grass and flowers that is on offer by the Mother Nature.

One of the great joys of Kruger is that there is much more to see than the Big 5 - flowers, trees, insects, little critters, and much more. Thanks for sharing your wonderful photos!

This of course begs the question: which flowers?

First two pics are of Dichrostachys cinerea, Sicklebush / Sekelbos.

Next an Ipomoea, Wild Morning Glory / Purpurwinde. There are 40 species or so in SA, this might be a bolusiana

Following pic looks like another Ipomoea.

The orange flowers should be Tricliceras laceratum (also called Tricliceras lacerata), or possibly Triclliceras longipenduculatum (or longipenduculata). The latter has only slightly toothed leaves, so as far as I can tell from the picture it should be the former. Lion's Eye in English. Wat is die naam van hierdie blommetjie in Afrikaans?

Then two pics of Scadoxus puniceus or multiflorum, not sure which. Common names Red Paintbrush, Fireball Lily or Blood Lily. Have your pick. Rooikwas in Afrikaans

The last looks like Nymphaea lotus, White Water Lily / Waterlelie, as I cannot discern any hint of blue in the emerging flower. The ones with blue flowers are Nymphaea nouchali var. caerulea . No prize for guessing the common name.

Interesting and alarming facts about Adenium Swazicum:

It is critically endangered since 2008 - 50% of its past habitat has been transformed by sugar cane over three generations resulting in an overall decline of 80% during this period! KNP is a "safe habitat" where an estimated 10 to 20% of the population occurs.

It is extensively exploited for medicinal purposes - the tuber is boiled and the extract sold to cure stomach ailments. (Very destructive method of harvesting.)

Adenium horticulture is a multi-million dollar industry in Taiwan, India and the USA. A. swazicum is a most favoured species for hybridization. Hybrids are sold for up to $1000 as gifts and good luck charms!
