Thanks SO much for your help — and compliments — JB and Caracal. I certainly can empathise with field guide photos that could be "anything" Here are three more of my KTP mystery flowers from March 2010. All help with ID is much appreciated!

Arks, try Scrophulariaceae Striga gesnerioides for no 2.
Also known as bloublom / snapdragon family.

Yes, I do think it's the same. And your photo of the single flower is gorgeous! Do you know what it is?

#2 does look similar to what you suggest. When I googled, found better pix when I dropped that first latin word. Apparently it's a parasitic plant and in Namibia it is called witchweed.

Thanks for your help!

Hi Jon,

:D Welcome to the forum!

Many apologies to everyone who kindly welcomed me. I apologise profusely for not replying for so long; it was inadvertent stupidity, not a dose of the sulks, I promise you!
JB, thanks in particular for the Wahlenbergia ID.

Glad to see someone interested in flowers!

Have a heart! Interest in living things implies interest in plants! And I can tell you that some of those tiny, but beautiful gems in near-desert conditions like Namaqualand/Bushmanland really clutch at my heartstrings!

[quote]Great photo of the Zaluzianskya (purple Drumsticks)
Glad you liked. Do you know the Vaalputs area? After rain it is hair raising! Great diversity, but scattered thinly over desolation. A friend who arrived with me remarked as we left the vehicles: "Die stilte slaan 'n mens soos 'n knal!"
We agreed that we never had been in a place too silent for us.

I'll attach a sample when I have it sorted out.
Cheers,

Jon

Somoene please help: How the... do I attach an image? Or submit one to attach? It can't be hard, I have done so in the past, but now I can't see how I did it before.

Thanks,

Jon

OK, this is largely to try out the picture feature. It shows a bit of Vaalputs veld after rain for the first time in ... years. Note the difference between this bitter land and say, West Coast.

Sorry Arks, but all I can make out is a couple of red dots. My impression is not of beetles at all, but of bugs, probably in the family Pyrrhocoridae (which means "fiery-red bugs" more or less!)

It is an important family, so you could find a lot of material either on line or in any book on entomology. But feel welcome to ask if you get stuck.

Cheers,

Jon
