We've had enough name-changes in SA to last a generation! Next its Pretoria, East London, Bloemfontein, and so on. Eventually, we won't even know where we are!

Some bird names have been changed from local versions to international, and while this is for more ubiquitous uniformity world-wide, it still is yet another name change! For people who have been raised on the old names, such neuron-switches are a pain. Now all those beloved acacia names are supposed to be altered to suit some other community who has little else to do with our trees than playing around with their names!

Leave our trees and their identification tags alone, oh thoughtless and sightless committee!!

I heard about this quite some time ago. If memory serves me correct they want to call the African Acacias "Senegalia" or something like that.

Load of cr*p if you ask me. The Aussies can keep their "Pestacias"
The real Acacias belong in Africa. Nothing conveys the feeling of the bushveld more than an Acacia. Well to me anyway. That's why I chose it for my avatar.

Though to continue the argument on a slightly more scientific basis....
Does anyone know when the genus was first erected? What is the type species?
If the type is an African species and this was described prior to an Australian species, then by my reconing the African species take precident.

What I could find out is that acacia means sharp; and the first acacia seems to have been named from the Mediterranean region. (Not good for your theory )

The name species change worldwide seems to be definitely centred around the Australians keeping the name for their trees as "acacias", but all others worldwide to be changed to Racosperma.

The majority by far of worldwide species occurs in Australia and the Pacific region (close to 1000) and only 144 in Africa.

Still, I agree that the African acacia is a symbol of the African bush.

Looking for an excuse to bump this thread ... but can't seem to find one!

When do we know what the verdict on the acacias will be ... i.e. what date will its fate be decided - or is it open-ended?

There is a meeting sometime which must make a decision ... not sure when.

Maybe we can find out.
