Lichtensteins Hartebeest in northern KNP?

Unread postby garrow » Thu Dec 10, 2009 4:09 pm

I have heard people say that they have spotted Lichtensteins Hartebeest in the Northen part of the park in the Babalala Picnic spot area.I will be staying at Punda Maria on the 30 and 31st December and would like to know if anyone has seen them in this area, and if they have, on which road?

You are more likely to see them to the east and north of Mopani rest camp as well as the area south of Pretoriuskop specially on the road towards Skipberg

Agree with Pangolin2u - haven't heard of them as far up as Punda Maria but certainly are found on s143 near Mopani and a limited number around Pretorioskop. Good luck searching though!!

A few years ago I saw a few north of Mopani, but I don't remember where.

I'm kicking myself because in May this year I saw Hartebeeste on the S143, Tropic of Capricorn Loop, and did not stop and have a good look. I just thought "Red Hartebeest" and drove on.

On getting back to camp, I looked in my mammal book and saw that Red Hartebeest don't occur there!! Therefore, they must have been Lichtenstein's Hartebeest and I "missed" them!

I have read somewhere that they do occur in that area.

I have seen them near Pkop, on Voortrekker Road. We were in a rush down the H1-8 a year ago and my mom swears she saw one but I'm not sure they are found so high up..? :? Maybe :hmz:

See them almost every year around Babalala/Boyela!

Check the Liechtenstein's thread under "Mammals"!

Someone saw 3 together there this year!

I stopped at Babala 29 October and saw 3 of them right in the open field next to the picnic site.

I’ve never seen a Lichtenstein Hartebeest ever before (or not that I can remember). I am proud to post my first photos of this antelope, he managed to avoid us for some years now but this time around there was no place to hide for him!

We saw a “strange” herd of Tsessebe walking towards the waterhole… When we investigated this odd looking herd we saw that one of them was a wildebeest and the other a Lichtenstein!! Both of them were walking in the same line as the other Tsessebe’s. The Lichtenstein was very interested in the wildebeest…

It was at Tihongonyeni waterhole (The best place in KNP) - December 2010

What a trip! You had some amazing sightings! This must be some sort of Kruger Park conspiracy! How is it possible to see so much? Is their anything you didn't see? You sure you don't have a pic of a brown hyaena somewhere?

Btw where is the Tihongonyeni water hole, I'm totally lost?
