thanks cheetah and onewithnature. Struggling to remember in which area as its been a while. However I would guess S47 just before the river crossing of th Nwanetsi, in the Letaba area.

Every day in Kruger is magical to us whether we see a butterfly all day or the Big 5...
But on one occasion we had such a stunning day I have to notch it up as my best day in Kruger ever.

The highlight of the day for us was late afternoon drive back to Balule camp we came across a particularly noisy family of Francolins along side the road.

My fiancé ever the eagle eyed self proclaimed bush tracker stopped to see what the fuss was about and to our absolute shock saw a huge caracal, with the obviously threatened Francolins running around it.

Before i could even see what happened the caracal grabbed one and then walked off into the bush with the francolin in its mouth.

He then stopped a few metres in and proceed to devour the whole bird whilst the now really pee’d off family squabbled around him – trying to recover their family member ???

I managed to get a few pics, but not the best quality as it was with one of those al chepo’ 1st edition digital cameras



But an amazing sighting we will NEVER forget and the only caracal we’ve been lucky enough to see in the park

Leighvlasso, fantastic stuff! What a thing to see. I suppose it is a teeny bit sad seeing a bird alive and enjoying Kruger one moment, and the next being eaten! I've actually heard that Caracal are sometimes spotted around Balule, so you were the lucky one that day.

I'd heard about caracal near Balule but never been this lucky! What an amazing experience that must have been!!!

I've been really lucky with Caracals! Several in KTP and Addo on night drives and a few good daytime sightings as well, but this is BY FAR the most special.

These were taken on my very last night in South Africa in August. I had wanted to spend my last day at WCNP doing some birdwatching (which was awesome btw).

By 4pm the weather had turned and it started to rain heavily, so we decided it was time to go. About 1km before the gate, my friend in the backseat yells 'stop! it's one of those cats!' I hadn't seen anything.

I threw the car into reverse expecting to scare away anything that might have been there. All of my caracal sightings have been very brief and they disappear so quickly!

This one was happy to hang around for almost 15 minutes before it got up and calmly walked away over the dune. I couldn't believe it!

The photos aren't great because it was very dark and rainy, but this was an experience i'll never forget and the best going-away present South Africa ever could have given me.

Between me and my family we have recorded 10 caracal sightings this calender year in WCNP. That goes with 19 caracals in about 16 sightings last year. Sadly quite a bit of caracal roadkill on the R27 also even close to the Koeberg. Whenever my camera is at hand they never show themselves so that's why I'm about your pics.

Mentioned it a few times but WCNP has to be the best place on earth for sighting this mammal and we even had one come down to our house in churchhaven!
