Night drives from Nossob give you an excellent chance of seeing brown hyena. :D

If anyone would like to see proof of the presence of brown hyaena in the Greater Kruger National Park - check out the two links below. I am fully aware that this is not strictly KNP but due to the rarity of the sighting and the huge interest I feel that it is important for folks to see this. The first link shows the lead up to the sighting whilst tracking leopard and the second link clearly shows the Brown Hyaena so all those who doubted can now see for themselves that the brown hyaena is indeed well and living in the area. I saw one on Thornybush last year and although I did not capture a pic this is now proof to all who might have doubted their presence.

Finally I have my Brown Hyaena. In the morning when we drove from Nossob to Kieliekrankie, we saw something in the high grass on the move. The Brown Hyena. See video.

The accusation against lion to be killers of BH is to me under doubt.
We watched a lioness stalk a BH. The lioness got to within 5 meters of the BH before the BH saw it.The BH simply turned around and walked away leaving the lioness standing frozen. The lioness stayed frozen till the BH was out of sight.
If lions are killers of BH what happend here.
The lioness was obviously hungry as her stomach was flat and 10 min later she had a go at a springbok.(not in a RSA, NP).

Lion possibly not hungry enough ?
Low enough densities of BH in the area for the lions not to see it as a competitor ?

Who knows , so many different possibilities .

This from News 24 today!

Retha Grobbelaar
Johannesburg - People in the Lanseria area, north of Johannesburg, spotted what they thought was a "stray lion" wandering around on Thursday morning.

Earl Smith, head manager of the Lion Park, said several people had called at around 08:00 to tell them one of their lions was running free.

"We counted all our lions and they were all there. We sent two guys to look for the so-called lion but found no animal."

He believed it was "highly unlikely" that it was a lion. "If I had R10m, I would bet that it wasn't a lion."

Brown hyena

They did, however, find the tracks of a brown hyena.

Smith said these animals lived in drains. "It is not unusual to find brown hyenas in the area. When it rains, their lairs fill with water and they have to move."

"When people see a wild animal, they think it is one of the lions from the lion park. Last year the police told us to come and fetch one of our lions. We searched for two hours and found nothing."

Smith said brown hyenas were nocturnal animals and kept to themselves.

"If you leave them be, they will leave you be."

- Beeld

Shows you they are all around...
