I saw a Brown hyena when i was small...we were on a night drive in the satara area, and i saw a large figure run from the side of the road and as we drove past i saw it run up the hill, hair loose and long, exactly like a brown hyena.

I asked the guide to stop and we did but it had disappeared by then.....

This was in about 2002...

When you are lucky, you can see quite often the Brown Hyena in Kgalagadi like this one in the video near Mata Mata.

A brown hyaena was seen in the Makuleke section of the park about two weeks ago, by a guide working at The Outpost. The sighting was in the evening on a road locally known as Home Run, i.e. the road from the public tar to the lodge.

I know someone who has got a pic of a brown hyena in Kruger. Will ask him to register and upload. He is doing research on Buffalo in the park so he gets to see where we can't go. :(

Saw one in 1978 on the road between Shing and what is now Mopani, still trying to find the picture. It was a good photo as it was in the road right next to our car.

Thanks carol I remember seeing a photo my gran took of a brown hyena, pangolin and aardvark in the kruger many moons ago if I remember correctly she told me she saw them all sometime in the 70's but here's the rub here's what I really don't get in those days the predator populations were much larger than current and yet the brown hyena was in fact seen and recorded, over the years the animals have diminished excessively and yet no one sees a brown hyena how come? If the brown hyena doesn't come out because of other predators then he wouldn't have come out in those times or am I wrong?????? I swear Im now going to make it my mission to find the pangolin, aardvark and brown hyena in the kruger these animals must exist their, they can't just have disappeard??????

Can somebody help me I had a argument (quite heated) the other day. Does the Brownies call at night and what does it sound like? I had them as silent and the tell tale "whoop" in the bush is the spotted.

NetEk, The brown hyena is said to make a series of short "wah" and "hi-ha" sounds. The do not make the typical laughing sounds of the spotted variety but are nevertheless also very noisy at a carcase or a kill. As a rule they do not howl.

Interesting Duke is their a reason for it that they don't howl? Would that attract predators toward them?
