through a google search I found this article about oryx

http://www.bio.davidson.edu/people/veca ... ummary.htm

The author explains, among others, that by increasing the oxygen intake oryx are able to minimize water loss through respiratory evaporation. What does that mean? Simply that oryx increase their breathing rate? or (which would be much more astonishing) that oryx are able to "filter" the air to suck in much than the usual 21 % of oxygene?

Am I correct to interpret "increase oxygen intake" as higher oxygen absorption ?

By that I read that should average absorption be for example 25% of oxygen content of inhaled air, that Oryx will actually absorb a higher % like 30% to 40% thereby enabling it to breath less breaths per minute and thus loose less water through lung evaporation.

As I'm counting down to my next SANP trip I have been looking through some older trip photos and came across this series from KTP. Is this Gemsbok behaviour fairly common? It was pretty shocking at the time...!

An Ostrich family are using a waterhole in peace...
Image
A solitary Gemsbok decides he doesn't want them there and charges the group...
Image
One of the chicks is thrown up in the air by his horns..
Image
And left in a heap of feathers while the rest of the group scatter
Image
(The chick did eventually get up but not sure what injuries it sustained)

Amazing series of photos!!

I have never seen anything like this! Have seen ostriches with smaller chicks giving an BWB a good charge, but never this.

Thanks LQ and Rosemary, it certainly was unusual to see such an agressive display- especially as the Gemsbok always seem so chilled out despite their impressive weaponry.
(IQ isnt that great as these were digital scans of printed photos)
