In light of the 50/50 reporting & your comments on the state of the park and his seemingly remorseful attitude, I am perplexed! Maybe he honestly did not realise how heavy handed he was! Shame!

Hi Baffers

My SO won a prize on 50/50 a few years ago with some video footage of a male baboon killing a baby baboon. The expert said it was either "infantacide" where the male kills the baby to make the mother come into season. Or it was due to lack of protein and vitamins, thats if it was in the winter. Apparently they lack essential nutrients that time of year.

Our prize was a lovely picnic basket and rug which has seen much use in the Kruger , but now spends its days at the Kent Coast.

I cant express my regret and pity enough that you now have to use your basket in Kent and not in Kruger

I am one of the lucky ones that live right on the doorstep of the Kruger ... Allready got two weekends lined up next month One of them to take some UK folks in.

Strange thing is after being there many many times, the baboon killing the bay was the the closest I've ever come to seeing a kill

Well apart from a croc eating a barbel...

It is very interesting to watch the chacma baboons, especially early in the morning when they are on their way to the nearest water. Very play full, almost happy that they have survived the night. However they can be very naughty to. I have learnt 40 years ago to close your vehicle windows when you stop.

The car hoppers as i call them will jump into your vehicle and take anything that they can eat. There hands are amazingly soft as they push you out of the way as they go for anything eatable inside the car. Last December, Early one morning on our way to Lower-Sabie there was a troop playing on the road, a gay with a com-bi drove past me and i tried to show to him to close his windows. He just laughed and stop in the middle of the troop. The next moment a big male jumped into the com-bi, over the driver to the back of the com-by where he started to eat cookies.

The occupants in the vehicle got out of the car faster than what the baboon got into it. Leaving all the doors open. (it was actually funny to see the occupants jumping, crawling out of the vehicle) One lady stood next to the tar road with a small baby in her arms. The driver of the vehicle opened the back door of the com-bi to. In the hope that the baboon will get out of the car. The open doors were a invitation for some of the other baboons to join the feast inside the car. I told the lady to get into my car to get out of harms way. Luckily a ranger arrived and helped the driver to get the baboons out of the car. So be care full when you stop to admire these fine animals and make sure that your vehicles windows are closed.

On a sadder note, the same day on our way back to Skukusa at one of the river view points there were another troop of baboons. A young male walked up to the car with a dead baby in his hand. He stopped at my wife side, sat down and showed her the dead baby, it looked as if he was pleading with his eyes that she must help the baby. It touched her deeply and she whispered if i could i would have. He got up started to walk away, almost as if he understood what she said. Sat down again coddling the baby the baby against his chest. (i do not know whether he tooked the dead baby from its mother or picked it up after the mother left it.)

I have heard and seen on T.V that baboons carry their dead baby's with them for some time. It was actually the first time that i saw it. This incident made me realised that in the even in the animal kingdom every heart has it own sorrow.
