oh dear :hmz:

and I thought everyone just knew everything..

folks, I am a horrible channel hopper... I just assumed that every person on this website just knew/assumed/thought that this sort of knowledge was passe..

I really, really thought that this would be second hand news.

I need to think about this.

Our family saw hbs two years ago on the magic triangle - the back tar road from LS to Tshokwane - in the burnt-down veld. (Seems like they prefer open veld?) One of them were digging fervently, but gave up after a while.

Last year, we saw hbs between Satara and Olifants.

Beauts they are indeed!

Hi OWN

The magic triangle is the road from Skukuza to LS (H4-1), LS to Tshokwane (H10 - the road that I was referring to), and back on the H1-2 to Skukuza. Game rangers believe that if you wish to see anything significant, the magic triangle is it when the veld is dry. But hey, again, it's a toss of the coin...

We are just back from Kruger and spent an absorbing 20 minutes watching an old male honey badger having great fun in the bin next to our cottage, D88 at Satara, 5.30am, he completely ignored us watching him from very close, had his fill of whatever he could find and then had a drink from the dripping air con in the cottage next door before slipping off. Only other time we have seen honey badgers was a mother and two cubs crossing the road just outside Nossob camp early in the morning. Wonderful to be able to watch this "most feared" mammal so close up !
Like most sightings, its the luck of the draw and what pulls us all back to Kruger as often as possible.

If these are must see animals, Kgalagadi is where you should go .

This chap was at Houmoed in December.

We were lucky Sept 2008 to see both but we could only take a picture of the Honey Badger. This was take on one of the loops around Swingwedzi and the Caracal 3 days later on the H1-3 from Satara to Tshowane. Both were spotted earlier in the day.

Great pics Nannie and Gamespotter! You are very lucky to have taken such nice photos of this unique creature. I saw one this June and two in December but they are unbelievable fast and nippy. Before I could even say “Honey Badger” they were gone!

Well done!

Nina,

You're pretty much quaranteed of seeing one/two at Orpen. They spend their nights there, raiding dustbins and fridges. Dont forget to turn your fridge at night - although that's not necessarily HB proof! They are strong little critters and can get into anything if they really want to. Also extremely clever - they pull open the drawers and then use the drawer to jump onto the table on your verandah!!

Watch and listen for them late at night

I've had that experience yes (in a non-SANParks camp).

Great fun to have a HB growling at you, but be very careful! They will fight (and win!) with leopards, and somehow I think that even if you are black belt whatever, you'll loose.

But if you keep your distance you can follow them around, and maybe even get good photos of them.

Agree with DuQues. Definitedly keep your distance! They stand their ground, no matter what. And they keep coming back. They turned our fridge, so we had to retrieve the contents (did it in double time I might tell you) and put them in the cooler box inside the hut. When they returned it was the funniest thing to watch - they ran around and around the fridge wondering what had happened to all their late night snacks!
