You can see it in Kruger, but only way down south in between Skukuza and Berg-en-Dal.

I'm pretty sure they have been extinct in Kruger for decades now, as their brief "reintroduction" to the area mentioned was a failure, and that habitat was not suitable in the first place.

Sorry!

Oh no!! :( We were on a mission to find them.... no wonder we could find no sign of them! :(

Oribi are in the high mountains of SW Kruger near Berg En Dal and Bushman Trail is the place to see them if the guide is prepared (and you to do some climbing) the Grey Rhebok is also found there. Somebody told me that Oribi have been /are goingto be released at Tshokwane ???? on the grassy plains east of...towards Metsi Metsi Trail????

Great news, Peter, although seeing is believing!

I think there may be a confusion regarding both oribi and rhebuck in the Berg en Dal area, with the actual sightings being mountain reedbuck! 8)

Maybe Park staff can give more info!?

An interesting article in the Sunday Tribune titled Dwindling Oribi species and they go on to say

Oribi numbers continue to decline in South Africa, mainly through illegal hunting and habitat loss.
The Endangered Wildlife Trust's Oribi Workshop Group is still collating returns on its bi-annual oribi count, and to date has received 185 returns from KZN, E. Cape, Free State, Mpumalanga, Gauteng and N. W. province.
These show a combined total of 993 Oribi counted in 2007.
A comparison with figures for previous years shows a sharp decline in numbers.
Andre Rossouw of the Oribi Working Group, a field worker in KZN, said that in 2005 about 1500 animals had been counted in KZN. At last count this figure was around 930.
However, he said returns were still coming in from Newcastle and Greytown areas, and it was hoped these figures would boost the figure by 100.
Rossouw said the counts were only on private land and those on Ezemelo KZN Wildlife land could boost the number by a further 600.

There is a new "Kruger Park guide book" out, which discusses the oribi as being found around Pretoriuskop.

Unfortunately, the accompanying photo is that of a suni, and the oribi is credited with being "the largest of the miniature antelope"!

In reality, the oribi is the smallest of the "Waterbuck" family, including reedbuck etc.

(Otherwise, the book is very good! :D )
