Post your pics here or email me on goddardm@live.com Lets see if we can ID all the herd and lone animals in Kruger...

Please post date, time, area, road, etc etc....any information you can think of to make it more easy for us..Hopefully we will be able to ID individuals as time goes by and see how the herd survive and where they are :D

Hi Martie,

Not sure if these are what you are after, they are almost three years old now, but maybe they are still around? At least it will get the ball rolling on this thread? They were at Rooibosrant dam on the 19th July 2008.

Apologies for one or two of the blurred pics, but they might help to ID the individual.

Hi Barcud
Thank you for the contribution, I was worried that its only RP and I interested in seeing the different herds etc......, but I get the following message when trying to open the pics..

An HTTP error occurred while getting:

I can now see the pics and am looking for the Rooiboshrand dam on my map!! :D

Please can all who post pics or email them to me just mention a road or camp close by so I dont get lost in this thread!!

Martie,

Rooibosrant Dam is close to Bateleur camp.

There were just these two individuals seen, no others present while we were there.

Do you want me to e-mail you the larger files?

Hi Martie,

Here are some pictures of a sable we saw on 12 September 2010 on the H1-2 between Skukuza and Tshokwane at the Mantimahie Dam. I cannot remember the time, but it was in the afternoon. (My camera's time was not set correctly, stupid me!) Unfortunately the pictures are not of a very good quality, because it was far away. But it is such a beautiful creature, that I tried to capture it never mind the distance. It was only the one sable, and we never expected it on this road anyway.

I am wondering about all the sable that Californiadreamer saw during his visit to KNP recently. According to his trip report, he saw them quite regularly, but never posted any pictures of them. I have asked him about it, but he did not respond. I am still wondering if he wasn't confused with kudus and thought it was sable, because he saw them much too often. This is only the second one that I saw in all the years we went to KNP. The first one was many moons ago on the bank of the Letaba River (at Letaba). Unfortunately I do not have a picture of that one.

Kind regards.

Sorry it took me so long to get back here, but it actually turned out to be a massive task  I have tried to break down the different sightings into the following categories:

Sable around PKop/Voortrekker Road
Sable south of Nhlanguleni on the S36
Sable North of Nhlanguleni, Talamati, S140 etc
Sable North of Satara

I downloaded all the pics posted on the Sable thread, those emailed to me and those posted here. I decided to concentrate on the bulls and hopefully later on we can add the "ladies"

Unfortunately as mentioned before not all pics are close ups which makes it difficult to actually ID individuals....but I hope that you will help out by looking at the different sets and we can at least name one or two from each area to start with.

Here are the links....

(Barcud I notice a few of your pics did not download...I willl add them during the course of the day I also know that this still needs a lot of work , but at least its a start :)

Further to the above, I noticed the following:

A smallish herd North of Nhlanguleni (10 - 15 animals)
2 Lone bulls in the same area (maybe broke away from the big herd around Jones Dam)
Big herd (20+ animals) below Nhlanguleni, Jones Dam, Kruger tablets area
Small herd around PKop (8-12 animals)
2 Lone bulls around same area but up to Transport Dam
Small herd around Bateleur/Rooibosrant dam
2 Lone bulls North of Mopani

Now Im thinking, the lone bulls in the area will probably start thier own herds....will we see more sightings north of Satara with the small herd and the lone bulls

Are we going to see more herds on the S36, South of Nhlanguleni is already a big herd, will the lone bulls start thier own herds and spread out further in this area??

Very interesting that in 2004 the herd seen around Jones Dam were about 12 - 15 animals..now in the region on 20+

The small herd of about 15 (North of Nhalanguleni were reported to be about 8 animals around 2007

Please remember Im not an expert on Sable,
Just trying to get it all toghether

No photos  but we saw 2 bulls near Pretoriuskop in 2003, and a three or four of them on the corner of the H1-8 and the S63 in 2009.
