Hello!

Is there someone willing to do a thread monitoring roan and sable sightings in Kruger along similar lines to the "Big Tuskers" thread?

Their facial markings are very distinctive, and I'm sure it would be fascinating regarding dates and locations over the years...


(Probably two threads, I suppose?)

Aat agrees, and I don't think it would require too much hard drive space or time.

Preferably an eager youngster, so that cuts out 90% of the forumites!

Older will also then have to do!

Lowveldboy has agreed to do the Sable, and hopefully oddesy the Roan!


Now ideas are needed as to whether it should start from a certain time like beginning 2010 0r 2005 or something. These (and other suggestions) can be posted here!

Obviously dates and localities of pics are vital...

Aat will give them advice too, hopefully!

I would love to help out on this one, but as I have never been able to located either Roan or Sable I think it will be a total waist of time.

But I will be very happy to assist in any way I can when I find some.
Names, dates, places, characteristics, photo's etc.

I think the idea is great to follow the Sable and Roan.

Richprins asked me for advice so how can I refuse ???

If there are two volunteers to gather the info and pics they need the following things:
Pictures with date and location of sighting and ... permission by the photographer to use the pictures for the described purposes.

Then the collected pictures should be categorized and ID marks defined. So you need good and clear pictures of the animals.
Next is to give names to the individual animals and setup pages for them like I am doing with the tuskers.
The pictures should be posted by date of sighting to get an overview per animal over time.
Most recent ones at top and older ones at the right place in this overview.
Always add Credits of photographer including date and location.

Both volunteers could start with posting this on Facebook ?? (open account with Sable_Kruger and Roan_Kruger) and add albums there ... could be a possibility maybe... or something on Flickr..

The volunteers should discuss /agree about naming convention

Difficulty with Roan and Sable is to get detailed pictures otherwise ID'ing is hard to do.

Hi Toko...nice photo! One way to differentiate between individual animals is to compare ear sizes!

Thanks for the advice Aat Ill have a look at a few different options to see what will be the best And hopefully get started sometime during the week.

It would be quite easy to start a group on facebook, or i do have a Flickr account A website with pages like yours would be a good thing to aim for after we have a decent amount of content , as there is nothing worse than an empty web page

It is for the benefit of the forumites so what would everyone vote as the easiest to access?

RP, flickr is a photo hosting site, probably the best I have a membership so can have as many picture uploaded as I choose have a look HERE. You can create sets etc.

The horns would be a good indicator especially if they are very different. I was thinking of using possibly these characteristics to start with:

1) Horn shape
2) Distinct facial markings (the black patterns seem to be quite different)
3) then I have not tried it out yet, but to measure actual length from a photo is impossible unless you know the exact distance of the subject to the photographer, BUT i was thinking percentage area (regardless of units used) might work, because then regardless of how far away the animal is the amount of black or white coat that make up the face will be the same Then i just need to decide from where we will take the measurement.
