I don't know what age roan and sable grow to? Maybe there should be some limit as to the age of pics? Experts?

Also, I think you can start "pirating" pics off the relevant antelope threads already, mgoddard.

Also, maybe there is someone who can help with adding to maps...although Martie could do that too?

I think long-distance or unclear pics should be emailed to mgoddard in large format, so she can have more scope to play with!

Just a bit more information from Wikipedia...It will also answer the question from RP about age!

"Sable antelope have ringed horns which arch backward, in females these can reach a meter, but in males they can reach over one and a tenth meter. The life span of these animals is up to 18 years.

[edit] Ecology and behaviorSable Antelope live in savanna woodlands and grasslands during the dry season where they eat mid-length grass and leaves. They are diurnal but are less active during the heat of the day. Sable Antelope form herds of ten to thirty females and calves led by a single male, called a bull. Sable Antelope males will fight among themselves; they drop to their knees and use their horns.

In each herd, the juvenile males are exiled from the herd at about 3 years old. All of the female calves remain, however. When the herd gets too large, it divides into smaller groups of cows and their young. These groups will form new herds, once again with only one adult bull. The young males, which have been separated from the herd, associate in "bachelor groups" of up to 12 individuals. Among the bachelors, the most dominant will be the first individual to join a new group of females when the position is open. Very seldom, during their fights for supremacy, are they able to inflict bodily harm to the contender."

I think the above also explains why we see the lone males

So far I received pics from Barcud for Sable and RP also for Sable...very interesting to see the same herd I saw on the S36 seen by RP Details of these to follow soon on the respective threads

As this is confined to a single thread, I would suggest starting a post for each herd/bull, and just editing that post should new info come along?

I have received more emails from Twigga, Hilda, Kamadejo and am working through all the pics. I have gone through the whole thread on Sable and have now printed in the region of about 100 pics. Busy working through the travel tales to get more.

Please be patient as its actually a lot of work and unfortunately not all the pics are close ups makes it a bit more difficult to ID individuals, but Im getting to all the different herds and will hopefully post that within the next week

So far its been very interesting looking at all the facts

I am more too sure that he will be able to assist as soon as he returned.

Hi guys , we met up with Aat in Shingwedzi a couple weeks ago - shared a few frosties and nice long pleasant chat with him Told us he had great sightings of both roan and sable , and even eland Can't wait for his next TR He should be at Satara right now .

Lowveldboy its turned out to be more of a challenge that what i thougth.....without ppl submitting "readable" pics its very difficult to "show individuals" you are sure forgiven as Im sure I wil be without any pics coming through to me..apart from RP ;..no one else ever seen Roan in Kruger???
