Hi Aat

Congratulations on your nomination.

Like your suggestions, however ... what if potential contributors (like me) have no interest in opening a Facebook/Twitter "persona".

I would love to contribute photos of a great sable sighting from early Feb 2010 - will keep myself abreast with developments and upload them then

Cheers

I think one just puts the pics up on their thread, and emails the pics to them if they ask, and they put them up on flickr etc?

Sort of like the "Tuskers" thread?

Anyway, their baby now!

Oddesy/ Richprins,

I assume you will require only photos of less than 1 year old. I've got some nice pics of roan taken in 2007. Maybe a bit too old. :hmz:

Do anyone perhaps know the reason to the decline in Roans to ~ 70 individulas over the past 20 years? I've asked that question on the No_Kudu Quiz, but it seems as if there are the same number of reasons as the number of roans left.

I think there's a discussion on both antelope threads under "mammals", and "sensus"...

How long does a roan and sable live? If they don't get eaten before If they only live for lets say 4 or 5 years, it seems to me a lot of work for not much satisfaction. Afterall they are not big tuskers

Well, that cripple at Jones' Dam seems to be immortal!

Even 2 years would give valuable info, I think...especially regarding movements, rare localities, calves etc. It would not only be confined to bulls, one would imagine! :rtm:

If we can get accurate sightings information especially location we can come up with a forum roan distribution map! Which would not be too difficult (GPS coordinates would be brilliant). That would be great then we can see where sightings are common and where a new sighting is made. Would be very valuable info even for scientists!

If we find that identifying individuals is too hard, because obviously life span is important we can name the different herd and keep a record of the size, number of males, females and young for example, keeping track of them over time. If we can get all roan sightings on the forum included over a long period of time we can get some excellent data!

Fankie,
You are right with that but I was just suggesting some possibilities to start a try-out with it. With posting pictures and info on threads here it is also possible. Maybe one thread to post pictures for ones who do the ID work. They can maintain two seperate threads just for the named ones without comments from others to keep it "clean". The general thread is for postings and comments.
Like many things there is choice. :)

The identifying of individuals seems so difficult and time consuming
But Lowveldboy and Oddesey did offer to do this ...

It is a fantastic idea and I look forward to the launch
