Just spent a fabulous 8 days in the park with DOGMAD (SO).
Saw the injured Cheetah on Saturday 16th Jan 2010 on the Satara - Orpen tar road.
We were about 3 metres from the injured cheetah.
Took great photos of the pair, and will post pics later this week.
I must say that the injury is worst that what it appears, the cheetah only managed to get up and walk about 5 metres, before having to stop and sit.
We watched this for about a half an hour and she only managed to walk about 20 metres.
We took close up pics of the injured leg and it appears that the leg is badly broken, just above the ankle joint, and badly swollen, SANPARKS should intervene and fix this leg.
The partner of the injured cheetah is fat and healthy.
The injured cheetah also looks fat, but obviously cannot hunt and is relying on its partner.
WHAT CAN BE DONE TO HELP......

Will post pics soon, just busy sorting out pics.

Thanks for the info vida.

SANP will not interfere. It looks like the brothers have worked out some plan, but I wonder how long it will be before the injured one has to run for it.

I might be wrong, but we first saw the two brothers about three years ago in the same area. For some reason we named them Amber and Jaden.

One was already injured and limping at that time, and we saw them quite regulary since then.

The first time we saw them, a ranger stopped and enquired whether he was holding out. KNP obviously knew about the injury even at that time.

If they are the same ones, the injured one is obviously a fighter and the other brother a real carer!

I found the following article on cheetahs extremely interesting….well worth a read.
Bigcat.com: Cheetah’s Workshop

I never realized that there are different sub-species of the cheetah….I was especially fascinated by the Asiatic Cheetah…honestly did not know they exist!!
Not SANParks related…but just for interest sake? 8)
Wikipedia: Asiatic Cheetah
Apparently there are only about 50 to 60 of these cheetahs left, and only in Iran…where there is also a breeding program to try and save them from extinction. On the following site there are photos of these cheetahs…look how long their hair is!
Photos: Saving the Iranian Cheetah from Extinction

Here is also something on the Saharan cheetah…just as interesting.
Rare cheetah caught on camera trap in Sahara
Rare Cheetahs Photographed in Sahara Desert
These cheetahs can go without water…taking moisture from the blood of their prey.

JEG ... the last pic where those cheetahs look like sentinels at a soccer game, and the middle one where they are getting to know each other's mouths, are just SOOOOO cute!

At the end of my stay at Satara earlier this month I decided to leave the park at Crocodile Bridge via the H10. Just past Nkumbe I went through a large veld fire and thought that would be the end of good viewing. Fortunately by the time I got to the bottom of Muntshe Hill the smoke had cleared and I came across a Cheetah standing in the middle of the road. As I approached slowly he moved off to join his mate further into the bush but not before he glanced around and I was able to take a couple of shots of this magnificent animal.

On to the cheetahs and black rhino. Apologies to those who don't follow tennis but as i say they can be renamed.

These are the cheetahs near Mlondozi Dam called Will and Harry. I named them after a couple of the Spanish players Lopez and Verdasco.

This is a single male cheetah also near Mlondozi Dam. He is named after a up and coming Croatian player called Marin Cilic.

These are the 2 cheetahs on the S28 named after the top doubles team which are the Bryan Brothers from USA.

This black rhino is found around Lower Sabie and has a fabulous relaxed temperment. He is named after James Blake from USA.
