I bumped into a 'bearded scientist' in Shingwedzi at the beginning of the month. He is studying rare antelope of Kruger and has been there for 4 years now.....

But guess what? He has not seen a single Eland in thoses 4 years!

He also tells me that the decline in numbers of rare antelppe is primarily due to the man made water points which once numbered over 280. There are 200 now open and more are due to close.

My first and only sighting of an Eland in Kruger was at Boyela last November. I already saw the Eland from a far distance but it took half an hour until it came to the waterhole which was occupied by an Elephant. On the first pic you see it on the right. As soon as the Ellie left the stage the Eland and a Tssessebe came to drink

After the last post in oktober 2010 it's time to have the Eland back in sight :) :)

During our trip in okt/nov we found this herd near Mooiplaas Windmill (close to Mopani camp)
It was a very very hot day so the air was thrilling...and made it more difficult to get real sharp pictures but I hope good enough to post them here on the Eland pages...

Wow Aat, what a great sighting. Great to see the herds growing so well in Kruger.

We have seen Eland only once in southern Kruger, early 2000’s and that was in the Pretoriuskop area and it was from afar. Has anyone recently seen Eland in southern Kruger?

I have read that those Eland released near Pkop from an antelope camp.
The Eland died from ticks. It is not their natural area

It has been a long time since someone posted any pictures of Eland.
I do hope that there are some left in the park for I have yet to see Eland in the Kruger.

I did some reading (Neem uit die verlede Dr De V Pienaar) When the runderpest hit transvaal in 1896 there where thousands of cattle that died,as well as antelope. Great numbers of Eland was killed South of the Sabie river. Could that explain why they are very very scarse in the Southern part of the park?
But on the other hand almost all the Kudu and Buffalo where wiped out because of the runderpest.
Stevenson Hamilton wrote that there were only a hand full of Kudu left on the Dzundzwini hill in the Punda Maria area. That was before the park was proclaimed. :hmz:

We saw small herds of Eland on the Tropic of Capricorn Loop, most days in late May 2013. They were very aware of our presence and they were only distant photo opportunities.
