Of COURSE a good sighting - grysbok are one of my favourite buck. I always enjoy seeing them.

This little Sharpe's allowed us to get very close, thinking that if it stood very still, maybe we would not see her

Thanks OWN, I could not believe it when she stood still as we came back to photograph her. This one was on the S99 Mahonie Loop by Punda Maria. We saw 5 that day which also included lion and the caracal kittens.

Yes, it's the same thing. It is also known as a Northern Grysbok. I actually prefer the name Tropical Grysbok or Northern Grysbok as it seems to be more meaningful names than simply naming the animal after a person.

I'm not even sure whom it was named after because the species was described by Oldfield Thomas in 1897, not by someone named Sharpe.

There are only two species of Grysbok in the world, Cape Grysbok of course being the other one. In fact some authorities consider Northern Grysbok to be no more than a subspecies of Cape Grysbok or Southern Grysbok.

Tom, I have never before heard of them in this area, the furtherest South I have heard of them lately is in the Orpen Dam area and that is pretty unsual.
Why do you ask?

Thanks Elsa

I ask as I had always identified a regular antelope as a duiker, but another cammer had said Sharpe's Grysbok. I just wanted to check
Thanks Again

Tom, I've had three sightings along the Timbavati and two near Gudzani Dam (near Satara), so I think it's possible...

They are quite common in areas near Phalaborwa, so I am sure they will be seen near Orpen as well.

Hallo, Tom124!

Just interestingly, the grysbok and the steenbuck don't really do the waterhole-drinking thing, in my experience!

Unless there is a very dry spell they get their moisture from other sources, or so it is said!
