Are they on average seen more in Kgalagadi than Kruger? The general habitat in Kgalagadi would make me think that they are easier to spot, but not sure the food source is adequate, any ideas??

Pangolin sightings in KNP?

Unread postby bushbokkie » Fri May 31, 2013 9:04 am

Has anybody out there ever seen a pangolin in Kruger National Park? If so could you tell me where? They are on our top ten sights too see ( as well as wild dogs, if you have seen those could you also tell me please?) and I know that they are a rare sighting, you lucky people if you have seen one :D We are heading to Kruger in a few weeks and it would be great if we could see one, we have been trying for years!

Thank you all so much

Happy Krugering :D :D

Hey Bushbokkie :D Welcome to the forums :D

Pangolins can be seen pretty much anywhere in Kruger, if extreme luck is on your side! We have seen one many years ago on the crocodile river road S25.

Wild dogs are spotted most often in Southern Kruger! There are a few wild dog packs that operate in the South, and spotting them has become more common in recent years. The best months to spot them, are summer months :D The H11 Paul Kruger road, S1 Phabeni road, H1-1 Pkop -Skukuza, H3 from Klipsringer koppies - Malalane, S114 Renosterkoppies road, S25 Crocodile river road, H4-2 CB-LS and H4-1 LS-Skukuza are all fair for wild dogs in the South :D
In central Kruger, the H7 is by and large recognized as the top wild dog road 8)

Keep an eye on the wild dog pin ups in Kruger while you are there, as that often helps you to pick the right road for where the dogs are hanging out 8)

I have seen them twice.

Once on a walk from Sand River bush camp. We were within two meters of the fellow.

I am afraid you are wrong EL-Bok, a Pangolin is a scaly Anteater. Very real and quite often spotted,

Bushbokkie I am so :D :D thrilled to tell you we spotted one at midday  about 2.5KM from Nkuhlu picnic going towards Lower Sabie on the 12th May 2013 it appears to be a regular in that area of late. Who knows you may just be lucky. Mads saw it the previous weekend as well.

I could not believe what I was seeing when I caught a glimse of this right there on the side of the road.

Stunning sighting Mellory   I have yet to see one anywhere!! When I was at Skukuza in May last year, a gent was so excited that he had seen 6  perhaps a little family, between Skukuza and Paul Kruger Gate the day he entered the park!!! So maybe May a good time for them.
Anymore pics to share?

Mmmmmm maybe that is true one of the rangers said that maybe with the cooler weather brings them out during the day as food is more difficult to find.

Two Pangolin sightings; one near Berg en Dal at dusk in July (2010), and one near Lower Sabie in January of 2011, middle of the day, go figure! We were showing two French colleagues around, the next day we found a leopard in the middle of the road about 500 metres from the gate at Lower Sabie. I'm starting to think there might benefits to showing Europeans the sights in the KNP!
