We've seen a couple of decent herds (or a decent herd a couple of times? ) near Pretoriuskop - in fact this is where we always head to when we want to see sable.

Are the game counts on the site somewhere? I thought maybe they were, but now can't find them. It would be cool if these were updated online each year (or if someone could point me too them  )

I think sable are one of those creatures one is very lucky to see when in KNP however - a memory to treasure.

You are very lucky, we have never seen Sable in Kruger

They are alive and well, especially around Pretoriuskop and Hlangulene.

Other sightings:

Dipene, below Kanniedood dam

Mpondo dam (Southern district)

Mlondozi road (Near H10)

Over the Christmas period we were very fortunate to see 2 Sable Antelope near Lower Sabie. We were wondering how many Sable are in the park. Our last sighting was about 16 years ago but a lot further North.

the 2 with the rhino opposite them and the broken down bakkie a little before them :?

Gosh Freda, what a lovely sighting.
Those horns are magnificent.
I have only ever seen one Sable about 10 years ago close to P'kop.

Hi wienekusg, & welcome to the forum. That is a difficult question. There is a thread on sable sightings, but I don't know if any of the lay forumites can help. Maybe KPSM can find out.

I had a stunning sighting of 10 in June 2005, and another solitary in the July, but those were the first for about 8 visits.

On a recent visit at the end of April we saw a herd of about 25 sable on the 'Voortrekker' road about halfway betwn P'Kop and Afsaal. Got a pic of a magnificent bull as well.

Also on that road, saw a few Lichtensteins Hartebeest so it was quite productive for a change.

Can anyone tell me how many Sable is in KNP

Morning wienekusg,

Yes .. it all depends who you ask on this one .. I only find Waterbuck where people say there are Sable.

Don't know what the census count is .. but it can't be very high due to the specific locations and habitats that Sable can survive or prefer to live in ..
