Just to add a thought to the Lion v Tiger debate - remember that the Asian Lion lives in territory overlapping that of the tiger. The only reason the Asian Lion is so endangered is not because of tigers - it's because of men with guns. (same applies to the tiger, of course!)

Few people have mentioned that the Tiger will beat a lion in a one on one fight (Maybe due to the tigers size), but in actual fact the lion would win the battle.
Discovery channel had a piece on where they have tackled the problem to see what will happen by taking all the info and reenact the fight.
The programs name was "Battle of the Beasts", they have mentioned that the answer does not lie in the skill or strength because jaw for jaw and tooth for tooth the two animals weigh in the same. Biomechanical claws have been made to test their theories for both cats have a striking power of 6m per second.

The two cats are very closely matched in all departments and even both of them are short of stamina.

The reason for the lion then winning the contests is that the lion is a much more skilled fighter than the Tiger.

Hope this answer the question.

I totally agree with Jannie.. The lion will win against all comers but having said that here's something to think about....What if a leopard was the same size as a lion? Lion would probably still win but it would be close with the tiger a distant 3rd...so its not all about power to weight ratios but rather genetics

Something everyone has failed to mention is the fact that tigers are solitary animals and lion social. This means that -should a lion and a tiger meet in a natural situation (?) - the lion would be part of a pride. In other words, it would be basically the same situation as a leopard meeting a lion.

Lion have evolved the pride system (unique among cats) to enable them to hunt bigger prey, and it has the benefit of added protection.

The pride system will enable the lion to dominate the tiger, since the tiger would invariably be outnumberd.

Has anyone else noticed that when you spot a mozzie before landing, and go to clap your hands on it to squish it 4 out of 5 times it'll simply disappear, leaving you standing looking around in bewilderment as to where it could have gone?

I wonder if they are so light that the air between your hands shoots them off a good few metres? Anyone found a foolproof trick for squishing mozzies that doesn't involve waiting for them to settle and bite of course?

Meg .. either Mozzies have become faster or age has caught up to me .. I usually could slap them dead one time an' all ... but lately it looks like I'm getting seizures, slapping my hands together .. waving ..

I don't even try to slap them anymore .. I try to catch them with one hand and squeeze the crappers out of them .. I have a better success rate doing that then slapping them.

However .. lately I also think they are becoming smaller .. I don't even see the buggers bite me .. then again .. Age could be telling me I need glasses

Tabard and Citronella candles. I dont like those electric jobs because they are indiscriminate and kill all insects thus harming the balance of nature....rather like the man I reprimanded years ago for putting a thick heap of ant poison all around his caravan "because he hates ants more than insects!"

Insect eyes are about 30 times faster than ours, so that supposedly fast clap of yours is slowmotion to them.

Electrified rackets are an extension of your hand, and increase the speed with which it arrives. Also they are thin and harder to see for the insects, thus giving you an advatage.

I know a nice story involving a electrified racket and an Angel, but won't tell it here...

Ooooooo - an electrified mozzie zapping raquet! :homer drool:

I wonder if I can get one of those here in Aussieland - sound like the ultimate invention to me!

W@H - ROTF! Woe is us aged (what will we think when we're the wrong side of 70? ). I find that the iron fist works at times, but at others they seem to disappear through the cracks - kind of like trying to hold on to water

Boulder, that guy needs not only a lesson in entomology, but also in hygeine :x

My son sneaks up on the mozzie with a finger wherever on his body it sits sucking blood. In the near vicinity of the mozzie he slowly starts to pull the skin so that it tightens around the mozzie's proboscis and then watches, totally fascinated as the mozzie pops from drinking too much blood!

Aparently the flow of blood continues one-way for as long as the mozzie's sirynge is in the blood supply!

 OK, JvR, now I kind of want a mozzie to bite me - just so I can try that trick and see it works in real life!

Thats a nice mozzy expolding trick!
It made me forget where the topic is about.

I think its a combination of the slomotion the mozzie might see and the air shooting him out of the hands.
